Join us as we work toward greater inclusivity and representation on Wikipedia! Whether you're an active Wikipedia contributor or have been curious about getting started, we hope you will join us as we gather together for a training and edit-a-thon designed to support queer and feminist contributors.
The event is intended to support greater inclusion both in terms of who contributes, and in terms of what topics are covered. Currently, Wikipedia contributors are overwhelmingly male—about 90%. Only nine percent of Wikipedia editors surveyed in 2018 by the Wikimedia Foundation identified as “female,” and only one percent identified as “other.” Who contributes has a major impact on the topics and people considered noteworthy—so join us as we expand the range of both voices and subject matter.
We will start with a one-hour introductory workshop on different features and best practices, co-facilitated with Wikimedia NYC. Following the workshop, participants will have time—as well as technical support—to edit existing articles and create new ones alongside experienced Wikipedians and Digital Fellows. In the last hour, TLC and FI Fellows will lead a discussion on using Wikipedia in the classroom. Drop in for an hour or stay for the whole time. Coffee and snacks will be provided.
Co-Sponsored by: The Futures Initiative, GC Digital Initiatives, Teaching and Learning Center, HASTAC and Wikimedia NYC.
