What is Wikidata?
[edit]- Wikidata is a free and open knowledge base that can be read and edited by both humans and machines.
- Wikidata acts as central storage for the structured data of its Wikimedia sister projects including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, and others.
- Wikidata also provides support to many other sites and services beyond just Wikimedia projects! The content of Wikidata is available under a free license, exported using standard formats, and can be interlinked to other open data sets on the linked data web.

What is Wikimedia Commons?
[edit]- Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content (images, sound and video clips) to everyone, in their own language. It acts as a common repository for the various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, but you do not need to belong to one of those projects to use media hosted here. The repository is created and maintained not by paid archivists, but by volunteers. The scope of Commons is set out on the project scope pages.

Editing Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons is a little different than editing Wikipedia. It is advised that you have some experience editing Wikipedia already and be very comfortable using a computer.
Task List
[edit]Flickr
[edit]- This workshop follows a non-Wiki workshop on 3/12 concerned with adding plant name information to plates on Flickr.
- This is the task list for the event on 3/12.
- Here are the tagging instructions for Flickr.
Instructions
- Attendees will create and/or log into a Flickr account.
- Attendees will choose an asset to edit using a spreadsheet provided.
- Attendees will add the tag "nybgtagging" to the asset.
- Attendees will add taxonomy:binomial and taxonomy:common tags.
Excerpted from tagging instructions above:
How should I tag my photos for EOL use?
For most photos, all you need to do is create a binomial tag with the genus and species name like this: taxonomy:binomial="Genus species"
Example: taxonomy:binomial="Panthera tigris"
Note that you need to have quotes in your binomial machine tag to keep it from breaking apart at the space between the genus and species name.
Tags are not case sensitive, i.e., either taxonomy:binomial="PANTHERA TIGRIS" or taxonomy:binomial="panthera tigris" will work just as well. You can also put the quotes around the entire tag instead of the taxon name, i.e., "taxonomy:binomial=panthera tigris" will also work.
Tips and Tricks
- Check your spelling! You may wish to do this through Google or Tropicos.
- It can be helpful to have the book in BHL open in in another window - sometimes the caption text is available as OCR.
Other Possible Tasks
- Add Wikidata information for:
- illustrator:wikidata=Qxxx
- engraver:wikidata=Qxxx
- species:wikidata=Qxxxx
Wikimedia Commons
[edit]- The more metadata in Wikimedia Commons, the more powerful the resource is and the more accessible the content is. For this task, attendees will adding missing date, authorship, and taxonomic information to Wikimedia Commons images.
- This is the BHL maintenance category on Commons. (Note that this includes assets that are not JUST from the #HerNaturalHistory photo set.)
Instructions
- Attendees will create and/or log into a Wikimedia Commons account.
- Attendees will choose an asset to edit from the categories provided.
- Attendees will add date information if missing.
- To get the date, click on the link in the asset that takes you to BHL. BHL will have the date.
- Attendees will add author information if missing.
- To get the author, click on the link in the asset that takes you to BHL. BHL may have the data.
- Add the author using the following template: {{Creator:NAME}}
- Use: {{Creator: Anonymous}} if no author is given.
- Attendees will add taxonomic information
- If the caption of a plate is not in the "Description" for the asset, add the caption text.
- If a binomial is given for the plate, search Wikimedia Commons to see if there is a category for that taxon. If there is, add the category for the taxon using the "Categories" section.
Tips and Tricks
- Check your spelling! You may wish to do this through Google or Tropicos.
- It can be helpful to have the book in BHL open in in another window - sometimes the caption text is available as OCR.
Other Tasks
- Use Gadget-Cat-a-lot to search for taxon names and assign many images at once to a Commons category for a taxon.
- Install the widget Gadget-HotCat to add multiple categories at a time more easily.
- AutoWikiBrowser
Wikidata
[edit]- The more Wikimedia Commons is linked to Wikidata, the more useful both resources become. For this task, attendees will create "Creator" templates for BHL creators who do not have templates.
- This is a list of BHL Creators who are missing "Creator" templates in Wikimedia Commons. (Source: Victoria Leachman, Siobhan Leachman & Michelle Marshall and licensed by them for re-use under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

- Attendees will search for artworks by the creator and add the new "Creator" template to the assets.
