Event description

[edit]

Black Lunch Table mobilizes the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. The core activity of the BLT Wikimedians user group is edit-a-thons. It allows BLT as a user group to work together to increase the information and participation about and by our community. It also allows us to invite all editors to focus on the knowledge gap that exists around the lives and works of Black artists on the platform.

Recognizing that Wikipedia is not the only platform that lacks information about the lives of Black artists, the BLT Photo Booth increases images of Black artists on Wikimedia Commons. To make notable artists that fall in the Wiki gaps more visible, BLT invites professional photographers to host a pop-up portrait studio at events and make that work open license for free use, edit and distribution.

Please join BLT at Antenna's Drawn to the Beat on Saturday, December 7th from 12:30pm - 4:30pm within The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans for your portrait.

About Antenna

[edit]

Antenna is a 501(c)(3) non-profit multidisciplinary cultural institution presenting exhibitions, public programs, publishing, and regranting located in New Orleans. We provide financial, curatorial, professional, residential support for BIPOC, LGBTQ-GNC+, women, immigrant, and other abled cultural contributors and cultural bearers who produce visual and performance art; digitally printed book arts; participatory and socially engaged projects in public space at the intersection of Gender and Identity, the Environment, Equity, Renewable Resources, Abolition, Restorative Justice, and the histories of the Gulf South.

Drawn to the Beat is a free, all ages arts extravaganza in New Orleans. Visitors can come and go at any time, enjoy live musical performances, draw on the walls and floor (which are covered in paper), and participate in one of the many artist-led workshops held throughout the day. Drawn to the Beat’s music and art-centered workshops are designed for participants of any skill level!

Black Lunch Table (BLT) is a nonprofit and sixteen-year ongoing artist collaboration. Its primary aim has been the production of discursive sites, wherein cultural producers engage in dialogue on a variety of critical issues.

Black Lunch Table Wikimedians mobilize the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. In the field of mainstream contemporary art, Black artists are still marginalized within our field.

Wikipedia estimates that 77% of its editors are white and 91% men. Our work shifts this demographic and empowers people to write their own histories. Our sessions and events, including BLT Photobooth and edit-a-thons, equip new editors with the skills and resources to create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles and encourages existing editors to focus on filling Wikipedia knowledge gaps.
