Welcome to the Wiki Year of Return edit-a-thon, an international Wiki celebration highlighting the Year of Return events in Ghana and the African Diaspora.
All on-site and off-site editors, after logging in or creating your account:

- Join us on the Dashboard: Dashboard link.
About our event
[edit]Our edit-a-thon hopes to document some of the experiences around this historical moment, and in the spirit of the time, add and improve articles about the Year of Return Ghana events, notable figures and events of the people of Ghana, Africa and Diaspora, as well as capture other items like photographs and other media surrounding the celebration. AfroCROWDer Goldenamonute will lead on the ground efforts along with leaders from Open Foundation West Africa.
How to prepare
[edit]- Bring your laptop: Editing Wikipedia is easier with a keyboard.
- Bring a published source to cite: Suggested books and papers will be available at the event. If you like, bring an academic paper or other reliable source of information to cite, to support your addition to Wikipedia. You will use Wikipedia to distribute information from this source. Try to bring the highest quality most reputable source you can find for the information.
- Create a Wikipedia account, if you do not have one already.
- If you wish, take Wikipedia's own 30-minute online training and tour at The Wikipedia Adventure.
- Social Media: Tweet, like, comment or follow us on social media. Our hashtags for today are #WikiYearofReturn and #AfroCROWD. Our Twitter handle is @AfroCROWDit and @OFWA on Instagram and Facebook @AfroCROWD and @OFWA.
Event Agenda
[edit]We will open the area for registration at 8:45 AM, with introductions and the primary training session to start at 9:05 PM. We will have a brief time to take a group photo at 12:30PM and time to share at 1:15PM. The program will end at 2:00 PM with wrap up to begin 30 minutes before that.
Let’s begin!
[edit]- Account creation and confirmation:
- If you already have an autoconfirmed account: we ♥ you!
- If your account is not yet autoconfirmed (<10 edits or <4 days old), or if you are not sure: Goldenamonute will fire up the WP:EVC tools for you.
- If your do not have an account on any of the Wikimedia projects: ask Goldenamonute or create one yourself by clicking the Sign up with Wikipedia button on the Dashboard.
- Log in to the Dashboard with your account.
- Listen to the training or, if you are editing from home or online, head here for the basics overview. Head here for a simplified tutorial.
- Browse Editing Ideas below and choose a topic to edit.
- Edit: in short - (1) click edit (2) add a sentence (3) provide a citation (4) repeat
- Ask for help: Don’t worry about perfection, the Wiki Coaches are here to help you.
A beginner's guide
[edit]- Add a biographical sentence: Start with a name, a birthday, an occupation or title, what they famously did, and (very importantly) a citation to verify your information from a credible source(s).
- First, click on the pencil icon on the right to begin using "Visual Editor". Visual editor makes editing easier - like writing a school paper.
- In Visual Editor, click on the area you want to add the citation. Then click "Cite". If you have a website as a source, add the website to the blank area; if you do not have a website source, click "Manual" and follow the prompts. If you have questions, ask a Wikimedia coach or go to Wikipedia:Tutorial/Citing sources.
- When you are finished, click "Publish" and your edit will go live.
- Year of Return, Ghana 2019 (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- Redirect: create Year of Return as a redirect page. (It's the simplest page creation. I could do it, but why not let newcomers try it out!)
- Content: choose an appropriate infobox for the article.
- Content (advanced): the article looks a little like an {{advert}}? Try applying WP:NPOV and find some new sources.
- Copyvio: just paraphrase it, copy-paste is a no-no.
- Content: fill "Discography" section with a table like this, easy enough.
- Commons: three (and only three) free-licensed pictures of him on Flickr; find them, upload them, and use them in his Wikipedia article! (Again, don't want to do it all by myself and spoil all the fun for our newcomers.)
- Copyvio: completely rewrite/paraphrase to fix the apparent copy-paste from afrochella.com and voyageatl.com.
- Style: remove the inline external links to Instagram.
- Content: fill in {{infobox recurring event}} that is already on the page.
- Wikidata: way easier to edit than Wikipedia!
