Meetup 7 - 22 Nov 2012

[edit]

Invitation

[edit]

Sorry for the short notice but, since I will be in Adelaide on Thursday night (22 Nov), Adam Jenkins and I thought "why not have a meetup?".

Drawing on Adam's extensive local knowledge, we will meet at 7:30pm at the Belgian Beer Cafe on Rundle St (officially in Ebenezer Place). See here for a map Kerry (talk) 04:44, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, it turns out I won't be in Adelaide tonight, so I cannot meetup with folks. Kerry (talk) 20:50, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Who's coming? add your name:

Summary

[edit]

Only Bilby and I came to this event. The venue was OK, but it seems that calling meetings at short notice doesn't work very well. Still, it enabled us to catch up and discuss progress on our GLAM-Wiki initiative.

Result: Rescheduled for a later date. Bahudhara (talk) 04:59, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Initial discussion

[edit]

Happy New Year! Are there any adelaide-wiki-meetups planned? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 09:44, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And Happy New Year to you as well. :) It has started well, so I retain hope.
We were discussing trying something for mid-February. One of the suggestions was to try out something a tad more formal: I have this great space at City West that is under utilized, and both near a pub and with a good pizza supplier. :) So we were discussing a regular event with a bit of a talk about something wiki-related every month or so, along with pizza and/or beer. - Bilby (talk) 13:30, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We were discussing trying something for mid-February. - So far, so good ...
One of the suggestions was to try out something a tad more formal - Well, OK. (How formal?)
I have this great space at City West - Good! It'll make a nice change from the East End.
So we were ... - Sounds good. (Except for the "or" bit of "and/or". i.e. I'd prefer "and")
I'm looking forward to reading more information! Pdfpdf (talk) 15:34, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try and follow this up with more details next week. We'd been discussing having semi-formal talks/topics to go with open discussion, as that way there could be more of a focus each month, and we might be able to pull in new editors. I've given a few talks on editing WP over the last year, and there has been a lot of interest in going someone to meet editors and learn a bit more about it, as well as some requests for a "how to edit WP" weekend session. At City West we have teaching space which we don't use much consisting of an open-plan area with a number of good computers, and various breakout rooms for presentations.
An beer + pizza works for me. Or beer + pretty much anything. - Bilby (talk) 13:15, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
and we might be able to pull in new editors. - Interesting. How would you get the word to them?
Or beer + pretty much anything. - True. However, I have to admit I prefer a Shiraz or a Cab Sav with a steak ...
Speaking of which, if you're thinking of a weekend: On sunday nights (only), The Dog & Duck (125 Hindley St) does a 250g rump for $7 (used to be $6), imperial pints for $7, very nice house red for $5. i.e. Sunday: 12 noon-8 pm ($7.00 meals restricted menu). (However, I can't find a copy of the Sunday night menu.) Pdfpdf (talk) 14:08, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What are the chances of User:Timeshift9 turning up? I'd shout him whatever he drinks to have more than a one sentence conversation with him. Philiashasspots (talk) 01:06, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So - what's the plan for February? Pdfpdf (talk) 11:14, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hahaha, me? Zero to none :) Timeshift (talk) 06:10, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

:) Why not? Philiashasspots (talk) 00:42, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Two possible informal meetups this Sunday 27/1/2013

A.M. Torrens Island

[edit]

I'm organising a picnic at the Torrens Island Quarantine Station on Sunday morning, 27 January - this is an opportunity for an informal WP meeting for anyone who's available. Contact me via an off-wiki email from my userpage and I'll send a flyer with details - but please note that since access to Torrens Island is restricted, I need to have RSVPs by Thursday night / first thing Friday a.m. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:36, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, the picnic flyer can be downloaded from here - but please note that RSVPs are required by Friday morning at the latest.
(Pdfpdf and Bilby have sent their apologies, but it is still a rare opportunity for local wikipedians to visit this historic site, and to be informed about our ideas for future WP Adelaide chapter activities.) Also please note that the organisation of the exercise to photographically document the Quarantine Station buildings (mentioned in the flyer) is well underway, with a number of experienced photographers participating. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:36, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

RSVP list:

Evening - Hindley St

[edit]
For anyone who is interested but can't make it to the picnic, Pdfpdf has suggested meeting up at the Dog and Duck later that evening. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 06:00, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See above for my "sales pitch" regarding the Dog & Duck. The Sunday menu includes a number of meals for $7. e.g: 250/300gm rump steak, (and also, a huge rump steak, 500-600gm, for $10-$15), fish, snitzels, something vegitarian - and others I can't remember all the details.
I'll be there from 6pm. Orders for the kitchen close at 8pm.
See you there?
(RSVP here would be appreciated.) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:08, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers everyone for the nice evening! Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 10:32, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes indeed! (Far more enjoyable than sitting at home alone editing wikipedia.) Pdfpdf (talk) 10:59, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I think your partner deserves some sort of Barnstar! Pdfpdf (talk) 11:06, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The archiving service I mentioned at the meetup is WebCite, described at Wikipedia:Using WebCite. It works on AdelaideNow; I just used it to create http://www.webcitation.org/6Dyv11pfF, which is a permanent archive of an article from today complete with picture and readers' comments. I find Commons Upload the easiest to use. Drop me a line if you need "support". Pdfpdf (talk) 10:59, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the invite. A very pleasant evening; good food, great company and superlative beer. Glad I could make it. Doug butler (talk) 11:51, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Summary

[edit]

After two unsuccessful attempts attempts at organising a meetup, this event went well. It was a relaxed, informal discussion over a meal and a few beers, on the Sunday of a public holiday weekend, so it seems that the participants had the time and inclination to attend. We had the opportunity to get to know each other a little better and find common interests, indicating that the participants were starting to form a more coherent group, wanting to meet on a more regular basis..
