- No, there is no reason you would need to pay. However, if you do feel like you ought to pay, click "Make a donation" on the navigation menu on the left side of the screen. --Theunicyclegirl 22:49, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit]My name is Dave and I am the son of a World War II US Marine Bomber Squadron VMB-611 PBJ pilot who served in the Pacific. He and his crew went MIA on May 30, 1945. For the past several years, I have been using the Internet to research and learn more about my father's squadron, and its sister squadrons, role in WWII.
One part of my research includes being a member of another website community to placemark the locations my father and his squadron were during the war. This has led me several times to Wikipedia articles that have provided additional information.
As I found little or no history on VMB-611, I got the idea of joining Wikipedia to write an article on the history of my father's squadron and its contributions to the war. I joined in January 2007, am taking it slow, and know I have a LOT to learn about Wikipedia before I attempt to write my article, much less edit other's articles.
Of couse, my interest is the WWII Solomon Islands and Southern Philippine Islands operations.

[edit]Hi to all of you Wiki editors out there! I'm a 19 year old college student from the Western New York, USA area, and I just signed up because I wanted to give back to an encyclopedia which I enjoy browsing through so much! :-) I will primarily be doing "clean up work", but I will "be bold" and add what I think I can do half-decently. Tellervo
[edit]Hello everybody!
I am a bit late to introduce myself. My "career" as a Wikipedian began actually in the end of November when I noticed an incorrect statement about Pliny the younger (1.century AD in Rome) in Wikipedia. So I decided to correct it.
During December I started editing another page about an ancient Roman person, Quintus Tullius Cicero. (Not the famous Cicero, but his brother.) I took it, because I considered it to be a safer place to make my first and maybe "fatal" mistakes and be reprimanded. I was shy and just wanted to lurk around for a time, before showing myself. I was surprised that nobody seemed to mind me editing or blaming me for doing it in a wrong way.
I am a Scandinavian person, half Finnish and half Danish, living in what in reality is a suburb of Helsinki, but administratively a separate city: Espoo. By profession I am an analytical psychoterapist. Besides psychology I know a little about ancient Rome, definitively less but yet something of ancient Greece. Chinese culture and Japanese culture and history interests me. So does the history, culture and literature of Russia, Finland´s great neighbour. During my studies at the university of Helsinki I have studied also philosophy, both European, Chinese and Indian.
I am handicapped by not knowing a lot about the technical side of computers. Wiki code is at times mystifying, - at present I am wondering what is a namespace? I want to have my name on the general list of new editors, but how and where??
With best wishes --Tellervo 19:03, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hi and welcome. You dont really require technical stuff to edit here. There are tabs below the header of the page while you are on edit mode. You can bold, italisize etc, using those tabs. And you can go on learning in the process. See Help:Namespace for help with namespaces. — Lost(talk) 09:48, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit]One of the earliest photos of me is me with neighbor holding up a giant book called "The Book of Facts." Because my father was an English professor every wall in our house was filled with books. Then lived in Japan for awhile, then went back to the land when I thought life was coming to an end, inspired by the Whole Earth Catalog I moved back to Portland Oregon and became a "networker" in the Pacific Northwest, putting together "people to people" directories and organizing conferences of organizers. I've worked with over 500 NGOs. Experienced the "Internet" in the late 1970s through EIES. Helped Apple give away computers in the late 1980s. Fell in love with HyperCard. Helped Establish network of nonprofit computer centers in late 1980s. In the 1990s Went back to school and got PHD in Urban Studies, specializing in civic engagement and social capital. Now teach at Portland State University and do lecture tours--last year 45 presentations, 26 cities in 7 countries, 2000 people.
My keen interest with Wikipedia at the moment is to establish a Portlandpedia. I'm going to host a meeting among interested people to see what the model would be for a community-based Wiki. (there is a local Wiki and Portlandpedia site but they both seem to be dormant and I can't reach the contacts). Any models out there?

[edit]As a long time user and advocate I recently was using Wikipedia for researching a medical condition I have been dealing with for six years with no help from the doctors I have seen. I found a name for my condition and a way to resolve it in two minutes on Wikipedia. I caught the bug and now find myself going to the library looking for books that I can use as references for editing random pages. Thanks for a great new hobby! MDSNYDER 04:14, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I'm joining Wikipedia out of curiosity and under duress. I've always been interested in this wonderful experiment (?) but now have been tasked (ordered) to incorporate wikipedia into our extranet. Actually, I've been tasked to take control of a noble project attempted by well meaning folk who started a wiki-based collabrative area between several departments that has grown like a Hydra. Being the web master for our organization, I've been detailed to tame the beast and add order to the kaos as well as expand the collabrative means to other departments as well.
And, I've no idea where to begin. My initial inclination is to set rights/privileges/accesses and establish templates but can find no access controlls in sight. Is there anyway I can set order to this mess and start herding these cats with some simple structures and procedures?
In otherwords, how can I set up and guide a wiki for my organization?ConnieOC 14:23, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit]In response to a message from user PHG, I am writing to introduce myself. I am an Economics professor by trade (and may make some edits in some Economics-related topics), but my passion is Ancient Indian numismatics, or the study of coins. [edit]Last night I posted a message pleading for some help. I see it has been deleted simply because I was not able to complete the form properly. I gave my email address asking if somebody could please contact me to give me a hand uploading an article. Well, it doesn't seem a very friendly site - where someone who is struggling is simply deleted. I certainly am not very computer-literate and for someone like me the prospect of trying to upload something is quite beyond my abilities. I have written a short article about General Sir Charles Asgill (several articles about his relatives are already on this site) and all I am trying to do is make a contribution. I am his g-g-g-granddaughter and I have been researching him for the past five years. He was at the centre of a diplomatic incident in 1782 and is fairly well known in America, but not elsewhere. However, unless someone with computer wizardry status is prepared to email me and help, then my article will stay languishing on my computer and not on Wikipedia. Ideally I need someone to let me email the article to them for them to upload it for me. Is there a site moderator somewhere who would do this? My email address is arbil44@yahoo.com
Thanks, and I hope this will not also be deleted. My Username is Arbil44.
(Arbil44 09:07, 25 February 2007 (UTC))
Arbil44
[edit]Well, much to my astonishment, I seem to have uploaded my article on General Sir Charles Asgill. So, now my questions are different!
1) It does not come up in a search of Wikipedia.
2) I have a photograph of a mezzotint done by Charles Turner after the original oil by Sir Thomas Phillips which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1822. Now, am I allowed to upload this photograph of General Sir Charles Asgill? It came to me from a cousin who in turn had obtained it from the National Army Museum in London? Do I need to ask their permission to post this picture?
3) If it is OK to post this picture, how do I do so? I pressed the icon insert a picture gallery, third from the end of icons, but nothing seemed to happen.
4) I put double brackets round names which I know do appear in Wikipedia - i.e. Asgill Baronetcy - but some things like that did not appear with a live link, but remained in red. So, to make life easy for myself I simply removed the double brackets since the link obviously did not work. I was amazed to also find that there was no live link to The First Foot Guards, the most famous of all British Army regiments. Oh well, the double brackets came off there too.
(Arbil44 10:35, 25 February 2007 (UTC))
- I have moved Asgill to Charles Asgill by naming convention. General Sir Charles Asgill now also redirects there. I believe you do need to obtain permission for that museum image. Is anything in Foot Guards what you are referring to? Don't worry too much about the red links. Other people can work on making it look better. Could you provide some sources for the claims and quote in the article? Pomte 11:12, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Arbil44
[edit]Thanks Pompte.
I will contact the National Army Museum to get permission to use the picture.
As for the items in quotes: they are directly out of his Service Records, written by himself. I thought this was clear in the article.
There have been many biographies written about him. The newest being the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, published in 2004. There are several mistakes in that publication, all of which I have informed the ODNB about.
His story is in several books, namely "General Washington's Dilemma" by Katherine Mayor and, just last year in "That Sweet Enemy" by Robert and Isabelle Tombs.
Having studied so many sources of information concerning Asgill, I was interested in writing a piece which puts some of the small errors right. As his g-g-g-granddaughter, I felt it my duty!

[edit]Pomte has left messages for me elsewhere which I am unable to respond to, other than here. Sorry, but this website is an absolute nightmare for anyone with only limited computer skills - like me - a computer moron.
My article about Asgill is uploaded now and hopefully there will be nothing more for me to do on this site. I shall not be editing anything else, nor contributing anything else.
I have emailed the National Army Museum to request permission to upload a picture of General Asgill. Personally I doubt if it is necessary for me to do so, but for safeties sake I have now made the request. As for whether I will be able to navigate through the complexities of uploading a picture - that is another matter altogether. Probably it will be beyond me.
Also, there are supposed to be 17 "Asgill" articles on Wikipedia. They all refer to General Sir Charles Asgill - i.e., his father Sir Charles Asgill, the architect of his father's house Asgill House, his ancestor John Asgill, an article in the 2nd Canadian regiment about "The Asgill Affair" - in fact, all 17 articles have a link because they refer to members of his family. My article about General Sir Charles Asgill does not link up to any of them and I don't understand why. I have copied and pasted them in at the end of my article, and I have not done it correctly, that much I know, but it is from frustration at being unable to get the links to work.
I hope I am nearing the end of my need for help as this site is far beyond my ability to deal with.
Thanks for your patience.

[edit]Well, here I am back again, much sooner than intended I am afraid!
Someone has kindly done the necessary to my article and I think all is now well.
My cousin has just uploaded an article on Sir Charles Asgill (the father of my man) and he is finding this site as difficult as I am. If anyone would kindly give his article some attention it would be much appreciated.
Links to the other 17 articles on "Asgill" need to be made on the Lord Mayor Asgill's entry.
Thanks once more for the help given.
