Hello

[edit]

I suppose I will make this short and sweet..by my understanding -)

I would like to start with how I came to discover Wikipedia.com.

I have no idea!

Two ideas come to mind that might answer it.

1. I was tinkering with Linux distros. I think Ubuntu was the copy in, or perhaps knoppix live.

2. I had just had a spiritual awakening, story on my revelation, and experienced a random event.

I don't know much about Wikipedia..yet. I like the vast amount of knowledge it has given me.

Hello everyone! I'm William (or at least, I'll be in a few years, hopefully...), from Italy, so my english isn't all that great...BUT mine is still a lot better than the average English knowledge, for a boy of my age. I hope I'll get used to all those buttons and things (it took me half an hour just to manage to upload an image, dammit!) and that I'll find interesting people.

I have knowledge in Italy, Italian, FanFiction, Fandoms in general, Anime, Manga, books, movies, and things regarding genders and sexuality.

Hi, my username is eddiehu. I'm an Actuary, living in Southern California, Anaheim, Orange County to be exact.

My main interest is working on a Software Engineering website, founded by my wife and a colleague of hers, both of whom are on the Computer Science faculty of a local university. My wife has coauthored a book on Software Engineering which will be published this September and the website will build upon this book. I have been involved with several software projects in my work, which have enhanced my interest in Software Engineering.

I am impressed by the software tools tables in the Wikipedia article "Comparison of revision control software". Who are the primary editors and contributors, and how did you get so much software tool specific information? Were questionaires sent to the software vendors?

These tables are very useful, as I have been told by several software developers. I would like to help create similar tables for other types of software tools, such as Requirements Analysis and Static Analysis.

Sincerely,

eddiehu,

I'm a technical type in the process of changing careers to life-sciences, specifically regenerative medicine, of which Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is a subset. Coming from a non-life-science background means that I am coming to this as a layman, with the purpose of developing SECONDARY RESEARCH, assessing the voluminous primary research being produced at such a rate that it isn't integrated into practical applications, often for decades. I've used wikipedia often in the past, but recently saw it's founder in an interview, and realized I'd better take some wiki-responsibility in the area that I am focusing on, as I become more knowledgeable, and if and when I find useful contributions that can be made.

Thirty years ago in college I combined courses in computer science (Compiler Theory, Theory of Language, Artificial Intelligence) with philosopy (Dr. Diamondopolous, dean of Cornell dept of philosophy taught an overview of ancient Greeks) to arrive at a vague but romantic theory of collective computer-mediate intelligence, that the ARPA net was forming a system for problem-solving in answer to the collective threat posed to humankind by new technologies (nuclear, biological) that cannot be resolved otherwise. In other words, a collective known as "mankind" was seeing that it's hope for survival was networking.

It still appears to be the case. My worst fear is biological warfare. I'm not in a position to help in that regard at the moment. My other focus is on the disease of aging. Family events have directed me instead to neuroregeneration, specifically treating brain injury. Certain therapies appear promising, such as stem cell and hyperbaric oxygen.

I am partner in a Hyperbaric Oxygen clinic in Sacramento, California, treating both conventional (wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning, necrosis, plastic surgery) and non-conventional indications, such as RSD, stroke, traumatic brain injury, anoxic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and lymes disease. Hello. I joined 28th August, 2007.

I live in South Australia, Australia, (used to live in Alice Springs, as said on my user page).

I like reading books, posting on several internet forums I belong to, watching House, M.D., and of course, love cats :)

One of my favourite movies is Dead Poets Society, and already after watching it three times in one week, (no kidding *grins*), I have written poetry, started a piece of fanfiction, and started a fanvideo.

I don't know much of the projects that are worked on on Wikipedia, but I did join so I could edit articles if I felt I could contribute more to this online encyclopedia.

I found out about Wikipedia, most probably through a search engine, also most possibly through reading journal articles.

Hi, I'm an occasional editor. I have created a few articles, updated some here and there when I see typos or factual errors. In some of the articles I created, I'm afraid I'm guilty of what is called "original research". That is, I will add material that I personally witnessed or that is widely known and not disputed in the Science Fiction fan community. I'm not real big on controversy, so I've tended to stay away from the more contentious pages, even when I think I might have something to contribute. Maybe someday when I have more time...Bgoldnyxnet 18:29, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

My experience is in researching and teaching politics (the state, social movements), political economy, US and state tax policy, immigration, inequality, social mobility, health care, the Fair Trade movement, and environmental justice (so far focusing on nuclear waste siting); so these are the main areas in which I expect I might contribute to Wikipedia. I often approach these topics with comparative (cross-national and historical) research, and my primary geographic specialty areas are the U.S. and Sweden, and secondarily the EU, Latin America, and Canada. As well, I might contribute to entries on some social science research methods (interview, participant-observation, quantitative, archival), and critical theory, feminist theory, and Marxist theory. I really appreciate the public-spiritedness of Wikipedia, and my goals here are to learn how to edit and use Wikipedia with more technical proficiency, and, especially because my research experience tends to involve controversial topics, to learn how to avoid unproductive exchanges without submitting to bullying. I've been vaguely familiar with Wikipedia for a while; but I find that many of my college students start with Wikipedia, so I started taking an interest in what it was they were starting with. Now if I can only get them to follow the citations in Wikipedia, instead of just citing Wikipedia! Blanche Poubelle 18:11, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
