Sources

[edit]

How do I put the source on Wikipedia? Thank you. Junurita (talk) 04:26, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Junurita. Please read Referencing for beginners. Cullen328 (talk) 06:06, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. Junurita (talk) 06:07, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Junurita, please also read reliable sources to learn about the types of sources that are acceptable. Cullen328 (talk) 06:13, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting a user page

[edit]

Hello, someone else created my user page, mistaking it for my talk page (that user is now perma-blocked). Is it possible to delete my user page again (i.e. the link to it is "red" again)? I come from de:wikipedia, where this is possible. Thanks in advance! MeAmME (talk) 07:53, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, see WP:U1. TSventon (talk) 08:04, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bio of a living person

[edit]

Hi! I would like to create an article about a public person, a politician. He/she is charged with attempted murder, it is in the indictment, plus I have some 17 sources that claim the same. He/she was in prison for that, but released because got elected and has immunity now. Is it against the BLP policy of the Wikipedia to write it down the article that he/she is charged with attempted murder? Addmorefueltothefire (talk) 10:45, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at WP:SUSPECT (presumption of innocence) and WP:NPOL (notability) to help you decide whether this article should be created. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 10:52, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Addmorefueltothefire, and welcome to the Teahouse, and to Wikipedia.
I would very strongly advise against doing this, for several reasons.
First, creating a new article, even on an uncontroversial topic, is much more challenging than most new editors imagine, and where people try to do so without first spending some weeks or months practising editing Wikipedia and learning how Wikipedia works, they usually have a frustrating and disappointing time, and often do not succeed in creating an article at all. With a possibly controversial topic, this can be even worse.
Secondly, Claudine has drawn your attention to the special concerns for writing about people accused of crimes.
Thirdly, your language above, together with your chosen account name, make me think that you have strong opinions about this person's guilt, one way or another. Please be aware that advocacy of any kind is not permitted on Wikipedia, and coming in with that intention would make the task harder still. Please see WP:RIGHTINGGREATWRONGS, ColinFine (talk) 14:11, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HaMerotz LaMillion (and all of its' seasons)

[edit]

The articles about the TV show HaMerotz LaMillion, the Israeli version of The Amazing Race (General article, season 1, season 2, season 3, season 4, season 5, season 6, season 7, season 8, and the ongoing season 9) all don't have sources and are too much database-like (Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a database). The creator of this database that I will on purpose not tag (Xoruz) has been working on this for years, and has not been caught doing this yet. It includes episode-specific summaries, every and every spot the participants visited, and the worst part - it has almost no sources. Even the original, Hebrew article isn't this detailed.

In addition to that, it contains spoilers for future legs of the race (in the current season).

Do we ask them to condense the article dramatically, or delete them since there is no way to get sources? In my opinion, deleting the articles will extremely depress the creator, since this is obviously an obsessive personal project. And of course there is also a possibility to leave this as it is, though that would go against the rules of Wikipedia, unless the rules are different for TV shows and series.

CRplayz7 (talk) 11:41, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am active on the Hebrew Wikipedia, and less on the English one, so if it looks weird that I don't have a user or talk page - that's why :) CRplayz7 (talk) 11:42, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CRplayz7: I'm not going to evaluate the articles but MOS:PLOTSOURCE says: "The plot summary for a work, on a page about that work, does not need to be sourced with in-line citations, as it is generally assumed that the work itself is the primary source for the plot summary." PrimeHunter (talk) 11:49, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response!
I'll leave the sources outside. The spoilers regarding the future legs of the race in season 9 are not of the work YET - and should be deleted, in my opinion.
In addition, the article is way too long and unnecessary. Therefore, I suggest placing the condense article template in the top of the page. Since I'm not a regular user on this Wikipedia, and don't know the template names, I wanted to know what's the procedure for placing them and if someone would be so kind to do so.
Thank you! CRplayz7 (talk) 14:10, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter CRplayz7 (talk) 14:10, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
First, MOS:TVPLOT allows episode summaries of 200 words, and each individual episode summary for HaMerotz LaMillion 9 is compliant. Second, you removed two outside sources that listed future legs. Spoilers that are properly cited are allowed under Wikipedia:Spoiler. Also, there are 34 sources for season 9. What do you mean no sources? Xoruz (talk) 19:56, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prime Hunter has brought the sources not being needed to my attention.
Regarding the spoilers - someone who wants to check out what happened in the previous episodes doesn't have to see the future legs - it ruins the experience and doesn't add anything to the article. It's just annoying. CRplayz7 (talk) 05:07, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why can't I insert photos into my membership page? Thank you. Junurita (talk) 12:56, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Junurita which 'membership page' are you referring to? '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 12:58, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My membership page. Junurita (talk) 00:08, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Junurita. If you mean your user page, then you are permitted to add photos to it, provided they meet the usual requirements of copyright. Please see Help:Upload. ColinFine (talk) 14:15, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have the copyright to that photo, but it says there is an error and cannot be uploaded. Junurita (talk) 00:06, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Junurita: Start at commons:Special:UploadWizard. It it fails then be specific about the error. If you get an error message then quote it. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:23, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Error: This page has been blocked from editing or other actions.Thank you Junurita (talk) 13:36, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Junurita: At which point do you get the message? Which file name did you try to upload? Do you get an error message on this example edit link: [1]. Just click it without doing anything. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:01, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to change talk signature?

[edit]

Currently working with the preferences box to try to change my signature. I just want it lowercase. From the preview window it looks like it worked guninvalid (talk) 18:27, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature is "guninvalid (talk)" wich is indeed lowercase so it worked. The signature setting doesn't affect anything else. You may want to use {{lowercase title}} on your user and talk page but your real username shown in page histories and many other places cannot be lowercase. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:08, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright I did both of those things, thanks for confirming :) guninvalid (talk) 16:50, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fault in a 'Help' page (non-working video tutorial)

[edit]

What are the best places to report faults? In this case, the fault is with a video tutorial on the following 'Help' page (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Help:Sandbox_tutorial) with the video failing to play. I've checked the page for the video file at Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tutorial_on_starting_a_sandbox_article_on_Wikipedia.ogv) & attempting to play the video there produces the following error message "No compatible source was found for this media.". As well, the page shows caption text that may suggest that the file has been hacked? I've been through the 'Help' pages & there's no obvious place to report a fault like this. What do you recommend? Bluevista99 (talk) 18:54, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is better to report this problem at the Commons' help desk. Ruslik_Zero 19:39, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bluevista99: It works for me in Firefox 127.0.2. What is your browser and version? See Help:Media. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:06, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

how to change a title for an article?

[edit]

I have a task to edit and correct an article for a governmental event, and I was able to edit everything but could not change its title. So what can the problem be? Janaalrifaey (talk) 22:52, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Janaalrifaey. This is about the World Government Summit. If you have been "tasked" with editing this article, then please make the mandatory Paid contributions disclosure with your next edit. You cannot change the title because you are not WP:AUTOCONFIRMED, which requires an account four full days old and 10 edits. WP:COMMONNAME is the relevant guideline. For a "governmental event", we do not use the official government name, but rather the name used by most of the reliable sources discussing the event. Cullen328 (talk) 01:48, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, changing an article's title is not done by editing it in the same way as its content, but by another process, which I will not mention at this point since it's unclear as yet if you should be doing so. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.6.82.201 (talk) 07:03, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
