[edit]Complaint
[edit]Somebody rohitshaw27 has removed the dialogue written by me on my wikipedia user profile and posted it please take action Amit Giri Ji (talk) 01:37, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- You seem to have misunderstood the purpose of Wikipedia - we do not host 'profiles'. See WP:NOTSOCIALNETWORK. AndyTheGrump (talk) 01:47, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) If you were talking about this, then I'm sorry, but that was the wrong place to put it. The files for upload page is for requesting files to be uploaded. Weeklyd3 (talk) 02:12, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- And I'm not too sure who "rohitshaw27" is, because that account isn't registered anywhere. Weeklyd3 (talk) 02:14, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- @AndyTheGrump, @Weeklyd3 The user page and user talk page both look like bios (or an attempt at an autobiographical article). Should they ge deleted? 71.228.112.175 (talk) 12:00, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Responsive images/ wrap an image so that it resizes with the screen
[edit]Hi all, I am interested to know if it is possible to add an image that can be centred and resizes itself to the screen + stays within the confines of a wikipedia article, instead of trailing off to the right.
Particularly, a banner-type image that has a long width and short height. I have tried experimenting with a few guides on Wiki and in the sandbox, but can't seem to get this to work.
For example, WikiProject Medicine has an image that is limited to the article's space, but does not resize itself to fit new screen spaces. Would it be possible to adapt whatever code they use to limit this image and make it resize itself?
Any help would be grand. Jamzze (talk) 12:42, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- This is pretty easy to do with some templatestyles. For instance this page on mediawiki uses this technique via this template style rule. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 12:49, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Something like this would do:
.bannerclassname img { max-width: 100%; height: auto; min-height: 9em; object-fit: cover; }
- But that whole page needs some serious work to be responsive honestly. It also breaks in Vector-2022 because ppl messed with the positioning in a skin specific way. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 12:54, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Reverting Changes
[edit]Hi, First, thank you to everyone who has helped me, I'm very new to Wikipedia. I have made cited changes to the pages for Peter Baker and Susan Glasser at the request of the subjects. I had not realized that this would make me a COI and Peter Baker's article has now been flagged as potentially not neutral. Can my changes be deleted so this flag will be taken down? I did not mean to break the rules, I was just confused! I appreciate all of your help! Rslit (talk) 14:02, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- I have reverted the changes I made back to the originals on both articles. Rslit (talk) 14:26, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Rslit, I'd recommend re-reading melecie's response to your question here from yesterday, especially the bits about declaring your COI and making edit requests on the talk pages. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 15:31, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Speedy Deletion of Sandbox
[edit]Hi Team,
My nickyfusco/sandbox page was nominated for speedy deletion mid-edit, and I was really trying to create the page for our company to review before going live. The company has been cited in The Economist, Bloomberg, Institutional Investor, and Fortune. These sources were not yet added, as this I was mid-edit, and felt my personal Sandbox was a safe and non-public space. Can this sandbox page be sent to me at least, since I've not lost everything that I've written!
Thank you,
Nicholas Fusco at ApeVue Inc. NickyFusco (talk) 14:03, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Melcous did the removal, if that's helpful to recover it.
- I did this sandbox approach after watching a YouTube tutorial, but suspect that I shouldn't have hit "publish" NickyFusco (talk) 14:14, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- NickyFusco "Publish changes" should be interpreted to mean simply "save changes". It used to say save, but was changed to emphasize that all edits are public. Using your sandbox or Articles for Creation is the right approach if you are writing about your company. Please read conflict of interest and paid editing for information on required formal disclosures. Wikipedia does not have "pages", it has articles, typically written by independent editors. Those articles summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about (in this case) a company, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. Not every company merits an article, it depends on the sources. The text you wrote was clear promotion and was unsourced. Wikipedia is not interested in what a company wants to say about itself, only in what those completely unconnected with the company choose to say about it, and not based on materials from the company like staff interviews, press releases, announcements of routine business activities, or other primary sources. Please read Your First Article.
- Be aware that there are good reasons for your company to not want an article. You or your company cannot exclusively dictate what appears there, and you cannot prevent others from editing it. Any information about your company, good or bad, can be in an article about it as long as it appears in an independent source and is not defamatory. 331dot (talk) 14:26, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- NickyFusco, an acceptable Wikipedia article about a company summarizes what reliable published sources that are entirely independent of the company say about the company. Citations to those sources are included as inline references. The draft article in your sandbox was entirely unreferenced, and therefore all of the content you wrote was based on your personal knowledge as an employee of the company. That is Original research which is contrary to policy. You need to start from scratch by identifying multiple reliable independent sources and creating the references. You can then neutrally summarize what they say about the company. Your first step is to make the Paid contributions disclosure. Cullen328 (talk) 17:11, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi and thanks again here as we try to do this correctly. The sources I was in the middle of adding were from The Economist, Reuters, and Fortune magazine, which I hope are deemed noteworthy, credible, and independent.
- As this was done in Sandbox, it was still in progress, and incomplete. How can I be comfortable that what we have written won't be removed from my sandbox when we start 100% from scratch? This is not for promotion (so sans statements of "Best" or "Top" etc.), and is needed for reference on Wiki.
- Does someone on this forum want to help get something in Draft state? NickyFusco (talk) 18:00, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- @NickyFusco It is unfortunate if the contents were deleted before you had a chance to add the refs. You may want to ping @Melcous and see if he can help. Anything you saved (using the "publish" button) should be in the sandbox history and retrievable. 71.228.112.175 (talk) 02:02, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

- I quote:
- Given ApeVue are uniquely positioned as the first provider of independent market data on private stocks, their services also compliment other data providers in alternative asset classes, and those which provide reference data on private funding rounds, including s S&P Global, Morningstar (incl. PitchBook), CB Insights, Refinitiv, and Bloomberg L.P..
- (My emphases.) Incidentally, although it was Melcous who asked for deletion, it was Sjb72 who actually performed the deletion. And although you may, for all I know, have been about to add references, you hadn't started doing so during the more-than-one-hour of the draft's existence. -- Hoary (talk) 02:56, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- @NickyFusco Well, yes, that's a good point... 71.228.112.175 (talk) 06:53, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
communications.
[edit]how do I get myself started with contributing communications Grotesquetruth (talk) 16:02, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Grotesquetruth: Hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia! To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:34, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Grotesquetruth. I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by "contributing communications". Please clarify. ColinFine (talk) 17:18, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Grotesquetruth, your writings in Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities suggest that you may like to get into discussions. However, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a discussion forum. If you're interested in contributing reliably referenced factual information to articles, then yes, please digest Help:Introduction; if not so much, then please move to some alternative outlet. -- Hoary (talk) 02:44, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Fake scammers
[edit]I would like to be included in Wikepedia and had paid a company advertising their services and not sure if they are legit. Is there anyone that i can communicate that can guide me. Also is there any one you know can help me get my page up on wikepidea? Elaedo (talk) 17:12, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Elaedo. Most likely, you got scammed. What was the name of the company you paid? What topic did you pay them to write about? Why do you think that Wikipedia should have an article about this? Cullen328 (talk) 17:18, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- See also Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Scam warning Shantavira|feed me 17:24, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Eleado. It sounds indeed as if you have been scammed, which was possihle because you have a very common but wrong idea about what Wikipedia is. If Wikipedia ever has an article about you, it will be Wikipedia's article, not "your page", its content will be controlled by a consensus of Wikipedia editors, not by you, and it should be based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with you have chosen to publish about you, not on what you say or want to say. If the company you paid did not explain this, then they are dishonest. I'm sorry. ColinFine (talk) 17:34, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Well, Elaedo, which company was it, what service did you pay for, and how much did you pay for it? -- Hoary (talk) 02:46, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Another note: Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Scam warning recommends forwarding the message to paid-en-wp at wikipedia.org. You may also want to do this. Weeklyd3 (talk) 02:48, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

- You should stop giving them money. 331dot (talk) 11:45, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Elaedo, you need to actually forward that email to the address that was given to you (paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org). First of all, we volunteer editors cannot do anything with that information, and second, forwarding the email includes email headers with useful technical information (which are lost to the above copy-paste of the text). - Blimey, 5,600 (dollars?) to not even make the article that will get taken down immediately is quite the low. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 12:05, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Sounds like a scam. Paid editors are allowed if they follow the guidelines and disclose their association. But it seems like this company is trying to blackmail you into thinking that is your only option. What is your name or company name that you are trying to get posted? If you can post it here, along with some of your best in-depth news sources, the editors here can probably tell you if you may have a chance. Zeddedm (talk) 04:06, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- Right, @Elaedo, if the published, independent sources are there, an article about you or your company is possible. It all depends on whether you are notable (click here). No money needs to be paid to anyone. If you are not notable, an article is not possible, and money won't change that. Please follow @Zeddedm's advice. 71.228.112.175 (talk) 09:03, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. i find there is a lot of activity with so many scammers out there using the name acting as they are in fact associates of Wikipedia. This creates a problem for many older folks who think they are part of Wikipedia Org.I am sure you are aware of it as its growing in volume across all the social media sites. 2601:704:200:CEA0:0:0:0:5F83 (talk) 10:59, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Tags and templates question
[edit]Working in my account on a previously declined submission originally written by another person. There is a decline box at the top. It has an "add tags" box. When I click on that, it brings up the template box and says that template information is missing. This template is missing TemplateData, and its parameters have been autogenerated. As a result the template and its parameters lack descriptions. There might be additional information on the template's page. I have no desire to edit the template. Just want to add tags. Any suggestions? Also, I noticed in preview mode that the source code appears at the bottom of the preview page. Is it supposed to? Thank you! Saaswriter (talk) 18:27, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Saaswriter: Hi there! What is the name of the page where you are experiencing this issue? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 19:53, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Always name the page that caused a question. I don't see any submissions at Special:Contributions/Saaswriter but it sounds like you clicked a box while you were editing the page with VisualEditor. You should click it when you are viewing the page, not editing it. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:04, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the page is not published yet because it was declined initially. I'm trying to improve the page before submitting it again. Saaswriter (talk) 13:50, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Saaswriter: If the page is visible then link it no matter which state it is in. If you mean it was deleted and not merely declined but you have a copy of the deleted text and only work on it in previews then you have to save it before clicking the box. The "Publish changes" or "Publish page" button is just a save button. It's also used for unsubmitted drafts. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:22, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I didn't want to publish it to the public domain since it's not been submitted for review yet. Can anyone see it if I hit publish? Saaswriter (talk) 01:42, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Saaswriter Anyone who searches from within Wikipedia (and knows what keywords to search for), or who browses your contributions if they know your username "Saaswriter", can see the draft if you use publish. A search from outside (such as Google) will not. "Publish to the public domain" is really a misleading phrase; all material in WP (whether drafts or accepted articles) is published under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License 3.0 71.228.112.175 (talk) 09:17, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
