[edit]Please help references number 3 and number 40 - they both should have that the page is called "Classic FM" - this name is not in the citation. Please fix Thanks 203.132.68.1 (talk) 00:04, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

Using IP while at work?
[edit]I got a new job a few weeks ago, and thinking of the significance, I've made a few edits (exactly five since 9/19) while logged out while at work. I was wondering if there is a way to disclose that those IP edits were me, so as to avoid any accusations of improperity (even if it's unlikely they would be traced to me?).
Also, I am a bit paranoid about logging into Wikipedia at my new job. I don't know to what extent they monitor internet usage - but I'm sort of reluctant to log in to my WP account at work, at least not while new... anyway, is there a way I can disclose that the IP address is an 'alternate identity' of my account? I'd like to do this by the books. If not, I can just NOT edit at work but sometimes you see an error that is screaming to be fixed. Does this make sense? I think this makes me sound suspicious but I'm really not! ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 01:39, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- For the Wikipedia stuff: AFAICT you cannot "reclaim" edits from an IP to an account, though you can of course leave a note on the talk page signed by your account. You can however request WP:OVERSIGHT (on the "I forgot to log in" basis). And editing while logged-out does not need to be disclosed as long as you are not doing it in a deceiving manner (e.g. participating to RfCs under different identities).
- This being said... You seem to have a very wrong idea of how internet works. Assuming you are accessing Wikipedia over HTTPS (with the proper certificate), network monitoring by your employer can only see that you access Wikipedia, not what data you send there or which page you view, so they should not be able to tell apart when you log in, edit, or view pages. On the other hand, your IP could (maybe) be traced to your work computer, so if they know to look at Wikipedia contributions, they can find the corresponding timestamps and say "El Cid was really slacking off today".
- The above assumes your employer uses standard network monitoring rather than in-computer techniques (such as a keylogger or a modified browser), which could record pretty much every single action of you, but I would be extremely surprised if run-of-the-mill employers used this. HTTPS is not invincible either and there are plenty of side channel attacks to recover supposedly-encrypted information, but cryptography is a full-time job, so the chances that a sleazy IT guy will steal your WP password from network sniffing are extremely low (even detecting that you log in would be nontrivial). There is a dot symbol between the numbers 8 and 9. Please remove if this is the right thing to do. Thanks203.132.68.1 (talk) 01:54, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Fixed.--Muzilon (talk) 01:59, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
Sorry - I attempted to enlarge a file in the "Venue" section on this page and removed it altogether. Please replace if you have the time. 203.132.68.1 (talk) 02:38, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

Misbehavior of the search engine
[edit]It is common that two redirects differs only by their capitalization and that the search engine proposes the miscapitalization instead of the right capitalization. For example, when typing "galois f" in the search window, the search engine proposes Galois Field, and not Galois field. This would not be a real issue if the correct capitalization would also be suggested, but this is not the case. This may be confusing for readers who know Wikipedia capitalization rules, and also for editors who try improving redirects.
I have tried to solve this issue by categorizing the right redirect with {{R from alternative name}} and the miscapitalized one with {{R from miscapitalisation}}, but this seems to not work, even after a few days.
What should be done for getting the correct suggestions from the search engine? D.Lazard (talk) 09:42, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I am not sure that is a "real" problem since clicking the link from the search box leads you to the correct article (via redirect). This being said, there is apparently something preventing multiple capitalizations from appearing in the search field, so that something could as well give the correct one. Maybe head over to WP:VPT if none answers you here (on the HD)?
- I strongly disagree that providing both capitalization as search results would be better - maybe it helps editors fix redirects, but it certainly would not help readers searching for a topic to have duplicated entries. TigraanClick here to contact me 09:57, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I also think it would be silly to show two redirects to the same page, or both a redirect and its target. The goal is to find a page and not to educate about capitalizations. If two capitalizations are different pages or redirects like Cat/CAT or Gold/GOLD then it's good that both can be suggested although it may only happen when some capitalizations are written in the search box. {{R from miscapitalisation}} is an English Wikipedia template and not a part of the MediaWiki software. I don't think there is any way to tell MediaWiki the preferred capitalization (apart from only having one capitalization). It would probably require a software change requested at phab: but I think the developers have better things to use their time on. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:46, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
Why is there no "back" arrow on Wikipedia pages ?
[edit]- to put it another way, how can one return to the previous page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Macburnell (talk • contribs) 18:43, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Macburnell: You can click the back button in your web browser, right? I'm not sure what you're really asking for. RudolfRed (talk) 18:46, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, but there is no line at the top of the page with browser (Chrome) info - Wikipedia fills the whole screen. I have found that I can get back to the previous page by using alt+left arrow. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Macburnell (talk • contribs) 19:42, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Sounds like you've got something strange in your Chrome browser settings. See https://www.lifewire.com/activate-full-screen-mode-google-chrome-4103634 or alternative pages for advice on getting in and out of full-screen mode. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:54, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- If you are on "fullscreen", try F11. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:40, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

Founded in 2016. we Work in Marketing and advertisement. please help w to write article for my company. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ameykakde (talk • contribs) 20:45, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Ameykakde: Don't do this. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an venue for advertising your business. RudolfRed (talk) 20:49, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Ameykakde: RudolfRed is absolutely correct. That's not just one editor's opinion, it's Wikipedia policy. See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. If you company ever becomes notable enough to warrant an article here (see WP:NCORP), You should still not write the article, since you have a conflict of interest (WP:COI). Someone else will write the article in that case. -Arch dude (talk) 02:43, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Where to ask questions about the Wikipedia Manual of Style
[edit]Hello. I have a question about the Wikipedia Manual of Style (WP:MOS). Is this the correct place for me to be? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:31, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I would expect MOS questions to be raised at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (shortcut available at WT:MOS). --David Biddulph (talk) 02:29, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Moving text from AfD log to its AfD page failed silently
[edit]I'm not sure if I should've posted to WP:AN or WP:VP/T, so I'll ask here.
I tried to cut-paste move Special:Diff/863443818/863448552 from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2018 October 10 to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Galicia involving soldiers of the Blue Army. Attempting to publish the changes did nothing but take me back to wikitext editor, no warning. All I got was the editnotice from Template:Editnotices/Group/Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, with a garbled link to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Administrator instructions on top of that link (a bug in the template).
I checked Special:AbuseLog: Nothing there about my publishing attempts triggered any filters, to my awareness. (The LTA one is a fake positive, unrelated to the issue.)
Can someone try to perform the edit for me and then try to figure out what went wrong, please? 84.250.17.211 (talk) 22:43, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I had no problems making the edit.[1] I don't know what went wrong for you. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:55, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, PrimeHunter. Now I notice there's an external link in that text to be moved, but I got no CAPTCHA prompt or input field at all. Huh. I'm still very curious to find out the actual source of the issue, as if it's a MediaWiki bug or something. (Uh, thinking about it, it was around 22:30 UTC which my guess might be MediaWiki update time at WMF.) Would you create Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Galicia involving soldiers of the Blue Army/test for a moment, with empty wikitext? Feel free to try as an unregistered contributor, too. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:03, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I also know from previous experience disabling browser cookies can do that, but I assure you I have cookies enabled and I've never seen an issue like this before. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:08, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I could do it now too: Special:Diff/863621545. I have no idea. I guess I'll leave it be. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:15, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- @PrimeHunter: I'm sorry for the disruptive editing, but I am still reproducing the edit as an unregistered contributor after blanking the page. This weird. Please try for yourself. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:20, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I'm also noticing I cannot undo my blanking for the same reason. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:21, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I know the issue is reproducible, but I'm unable to test this in Wikipedia:Sandbox because User:Lowercase sigmabot II is programmed to ignore
{{Nobots}}
and reinsert the sandbox header (for very good reasons). Ideas? 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:33, 11 October 2018 (UTC)- Actually, bingo. I reproduce the issue there. Just Special:Diff/863443818/863448552, removing the wikitext (sandbox heading) and trying to publish does nothing at all. I didn't even have to save a blanked page first. Please really try for yourself (as an unregistered contributor). Maybe as a non-autoconfirmed editor? 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:38, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I've also reproduced at User talk:84.250.17.211/sandbox apparently (can't save the page), so it's not namespace specific. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 23:39, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
