[edit]Where are wikidata links recorded?
[edit]I know that the wikidata entry for Cambridge, Massachusetts is Q49111. My question is, how do I figure this out programmatically? The wikidata ID does not appear in the ordinary wikitext here. Is there an API query on the enwiki database that would return it? Is there an API query on the wikidata database (something on the order of "Select wikidataID where enwiki page is 'Cambridge, Massachusetts'") that would return it? Thanks for any hints or pointers anyone can provide. —Steve Summit (talk) 01:20, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- I searched wikidata ID at mw:API and found mw:API:Presenting Wikidata knowledge#Get Wikidata entity IDs. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:31, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- That was quick! Thanks. And it works: [1]. —Steve Summit (talk) 01:39, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Minor edits
[edit]I accidently flagged my edit in List of bicycle-sharing systems as minor. Is there a way to change it afterwards? If no, is that bad? -- Fiesian (talk) 06:49, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- No, you can't change it; but no, it normally isn't bad (as long as it doesn't become a habit). What I sometimes do when I make that mistake is to make a further edit (even one as trivial as adding a space), and use its edit summary to explain or apologize for my previous, non-minor edit. -- Hoary (talk) 06:56, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, thank you! -- Fiesian (talk) 07:27, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Where can I see the deleted pages?
[edit]I had a company page in the name of Wingify... It is no longer there. Where can I find it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.74.40.122 (talk • contribs) 07:41, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Maybe in Deletionpedia? According to this, the article here was deleted three separate times by three separate editors as unsuitable. Clarityfiend (talk) 07:57, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- You can't see deleted pages, only administrators can see them. Just to correct you on your terminology, you did not have a company page on here, no company has their own page on here. Wikipedia has articles on notable companies that have been created and reliably referenced by people unconnected to the company. We are not a place to promote a new start up; as you have probably realised given that this is the third time that an article with that title has been deleted. - X201 (talk) 08:02, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- (ec)Are you User:Nitika.g4? There are messages about the deletion of Wingify on that user's talk page, User talk:Nitika.g4. The content won't be restored as it contained a copyright violation. If you are connected to the company, please read our Conflict of interest rules. if you are being paid to promote the company, you must comply with our disclosure policy. Please remember to sign in, and sign any posts on discussion pages with four tildes. Thanks, Rojomoke (talk) 08:07, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
COI and other issues
[edit]Dear Sir/Madam, Recently, a draft of mine was deleted due to copyright infringement and to COI. I need to mention a couple of things and please help me because I really want to upload that draft entitled The Spectrum of Teaching Styles
1. I used in my draft certain sections of the book Teaching Physical Education. The book was written by Muska Mosston and Sara Ashworth. Mosston is now deceased. With Sara Ashworth, I have collaborated many years on research issues concerning that book. Recently she asked me to write an overview of the theory she and Mosston proposed years ago. She wanted me to publish it in wiki. That theory is fully described in that book. So, I uploaded the draft but that was a COI as notified by you. Now, I am prepared to follow the directions that you give in a case of COI. 2. Sara Ashworth is prepared to donate the copyright of that book to wiki so that I can use certain sections of it (as well as some images) in my draft. In this case can I use these sections as they appear on the book? 3. In the deleted draft I used as references basically peer reviewed articles puplished in renowned journals (including articles written by me and published in peer reviewed journals) to support my claims. Is this acceptable by wiki?
Thank you for the useful remarks you made for me and looking forward to hearing from you... Constantine Chatoupis (talk) 07:52, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- This is a continuation of this recent thread. As I pointed out earlier, what you want to add is not encyclopedic material. -- Hoary (talk) 08:45, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not the place to publish WP:original research. Perhaps you could find a different outlet for your publication? Dbfirs 13:23, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- The three issues are separate. We would work around WP:COI, but the other two are show-stoppers: WP:OR, and WP:COPYVIO. I will address the copyright issue here. Wikipedia is subject to the copyright law of the United states so these are not some silly rules imposed by whim by Wikipedia. All published works (including web pages) are copyrighted even if there is no explicit copyright notification. Co-authors are assumed in law to share the copyright in a work. The deceased co-author's estate is therefore a co-owner of the copyright, so unless the deceased co-author or the estate have explicitly conveyed that ownership to the surviving author, the surviving author cannot provide a clean license to you to publish anywhere, not just at Wikipedia. In any event, for the original work or for your work, "license to Wikipedia" is insufficient: Wikipedia requires a license compatible with CC-BY-SA, which in effect licenses the material to ANYONE, not just to Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 18:41, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Constantine Chatoupis I think that if you are not paid for your collaboration in the book, you can add information to the article Teaching method instead because your draft seems to be a duplicate of the topic. And read the regulations mentioned earlier, WP:COI, WP:OR, and WP:COPYVIO, and also MOS:WORDS. Regarding the comment by Hoary, most likely there is plenty of encyclopedic material in the book you want to source from, but be sure to read MOS:WORDS, in addition to the links in your welcome note. Thanks for your contributions. Thinker78 (talk) 03:06, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Template map size
[edit]Is there any way to shrink the map displayed in 84th Division (Imperial Japanese Army) due to the template Japan home islands defenses 1945? Clarityfiend (talk) 07:53, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Clarityfiend: I've edited the template so that the size can be overridden. But if you look at User:John of Reading/Sandbox, you'll see that it can't be shrunk very much. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:43, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah. Shrinking it to fit the article better smooshes up the wording of the key. Thanks anyway. Clarityfiend (talk) 09:39, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Help changing page name.
[edit]Hi All,
I am currently in the process of trying to rename a page as the charity has merged to become a new entitiy. As part of my role, I would like to get the Wikipedia page updated to reflect this, along with the brand logo image (ive trued but to no avail!)
If someone could offer me some assistance, I would very much appreciate it!
The page is: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/All_Hands_Volunteers
Thanks,
George
- @Gwjanes: Welcome to the Help desk. You cannot change the page name, but you can move the page to another title. See Help:Move. Regards ~ Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 12:11, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- In addition to what Abelmoschus Esculentus said, you might want to see WP:COI. Let me know if you have any questions. LittlePuppers (talk) 19:06, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Coord template within Location map template does not work properly
[edit]Specifically, when a {{coord}} template is within the {{Location map}} template it does not show the coordinates in the upper right corner of the page even when I set the parameter display=inline, intitle
. On User:Jo-Jo Eumerus/MIT Guyot where I noticed the issue I had to add another {{coord}} template to make the upper right corner coordinates show up in preview. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 12:53, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Jo-Jo Eumerus: As far as I know, it's normal behavior for
{{coord}}
not to display coordinates (either inline or in the title position) when used in a Location map template; it's used only for positioning the location mark on the map. So if you want title-displayed coordinates in the article, you indeed need to include a second{{coord}}
. (And if you include "display=title" in the location map one, the article gets thrown into the maintenance category Category:Pages with malformed coordinate tags for calling for multiple title displays, even though the location map one doesn't actually display.) It's a complex mess of bits of threads and archiving errors stretching way back to 2014. I think the best approach would be to manually archive the Memorable Quotes thread and everything above it - pictures and all. There's so much stuff at the top of the page for the archive bot to wade through, it's probably having trouble finding where the discussions actually start. - X201 (talk) 07:32, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

2018 MLB Postseason Logos
[edit]Can you upload the 2018 MLB Postseason logos please. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 14:44, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Why Didn't You Answer Me A While Ago. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 18:21, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- We're all volunteers, and you asked barely 3 hours ago. Of course, you could just create yourself an account and then you can do it yourself in 4 days time. As this isn't the first time that you've complained people are quick enough to do things. Joseph2302 (talk) 18:24, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
I Think The Logo is Unveiled Tomorrow. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 00:09, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
- If the logo was to be unveiled "tomorrow", presumably on 07 or 08 August 2018, why did you think that any Wikipedia editor would be able to upload it on 06 August 2018? All Wikipedia editors are unpaid volunteers, (mostly) working on their home computers or other devices: none of us as Wikipedia editors have any kind of official standing with the MBL, or any other sports organisation, or any other non-sports organisation, and therefore cannot have advance information before "official unveilings" or other such announcements. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.23.195} 90.200.136.119 (talk) 23:08, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
How do I declare an alternative account to the Arbitration Committee?
[edit]Hello. I was wondering how do I declare an alternative account to the Arbitration Committee. This is due to me having the alternative account User:I Saw The Great God Pan, and was wondering how I declare it. Your help will be appreciated. Thanks. The Duke of Nonsense]]What is necessary for thee? 17:49, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hey The Duke of Nonsense. Generally the only reason you would need to declare an alternate account to ArbCom would be if you didn't want to publicly connect the two, usually for privacy reasons. For example, if someone edited under their real name as a child, and then returned as an adult, and opted for a clean start under a pseudonym for privacy reasons. Even then, the only reasons a user would usually actively need to notify ArbCom would be in cases like if they were asking for advanced permissions, such as administrator, oversighter, etc, or if they were previously under ArbCom sanctions. If nothing like this applies to you, then it is probably find to just put a notice up connecting your two accounts, and ArbCom probably doesn't need to get involved. foreign language quote, indented?
[edit]Can one add a translation= at the quote template?
[edit]Hi, dear people, i do have a quote from german artist... in the german-wikipedia-template for quotes if one has a quote in a foreign language, one can add a "translation"-tag and then give the correct quote in english ss well. I did not find something like this on the english template. And the "source" tag also doesn't seem to allow that one gives a reference as <ref> etc.- Could someone please help me, how i quote correctly? Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 20:44, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- Gyanda, I don't know if the details below are what you're looking for, but here goes:
- For information: Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Foreign-language quotations
- For the quote: Template:lang-de
- For the source: Template:de icon

- Hi, dear Lourdes, thank you very much for your help. Very helpful links. Will try to apply thhis this afternoon and then see, whether I'm able to get it work. Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 06:08, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, all. I just don't get it to work. This is the german quote: "Denn Malerei muss nicht nur mit dem Pinsel passieren, sondern für mich heißt Malerei, mit Formen und Farben zu spielen." it is by Achim Zeman. I would start with the quote like this Painting must not only happen with the brush, but for me painting means playing with shapes and colours. (Achim Zeman) - i could add the orignal language with (in German: Denn Malerei muss nicht nur mit dem Pinsel passieren, sondern für mich heißt Malerei, mit Formen und Farben zu spielen.) - that would work, but doesn't look as nice as this one, which i did in another article (where no translation and no reference had to be given):
- how do i get the quote as beautiful as this one - when with "source" i would have to give a whole "cite web", etc. ? --Gyanda (talk) 18:03, 6 August 2018 (UTC)Color to me is the most important problem, it's a pioneering problem, it's a very new experience to not tell a story, not make the color the burden of a symbolic meaning. Just perceive and understand, what the sensation is of color. Intense colors give me that sense of aliveness.

- I really urgently need someone helping me with formatting, which is quite complicated. Do you have mentors and would PLEASE!!! someone help me with it? --Gyanda (talk) 18:43, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Templates are intended to make your life easier. If you cannot get one or more templates to do what you want, don't use templates. Instead, just use basic wiki markup (colons, etc) to achieve the desired outcome. -Arch dude (talk) 18:48, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

- Thank you very much Arch, it is very kind of you to help me. Unfortunately it seems that at the english wikipedia no mentor-program exists... it's dificult to learn the right formatting, if one cannot ask someone, and it is very depressing to be left alone so much here, sometimes i feel that i'm just not welcome here, or in general people are not welcome with their detail-questions... Thanks again for your help!--Gyanda (talk) 21:40, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- By the way, for the formatting in the german wikipedia i made up a vademecum, where i store all the details of HTML i do need for certain references, etc. - i would love to build up something like this also for the english-wikipedia, but as almost noone is willing to really help with training - i have no chance to learn, this is really frustrating and i do not understand, why there is no real help avaiable for a longer period of time. It's as if it is not wanted that people do learn and grow. It's depressing! --Gyanda (talk) 22:04, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Gyanda, I'm sorry to read that the experience is depressing. But I'm puzzled. For the majority of my editing of articles I wouldn't benefit from templates (which certainly do differ between de:WP and en:WP) and therefore don't want to use them. Instead, I use standard Mediawiki markup (''italics'', etc),, HTML, and CSS, which don't vary between en:WP and de:WP. I'm not so skillful at, for example, the elegant positioning of images; so I position them well enough not to confuse or annoy, hoping/expecting that somebody else will come along later and tidy them up. Can you give an example of the problems you face?
Additionally, I don't know which vademecum you're referring to; but if it's Benutzerin:Gyanda/Formatierungen, die mir gefallen (which combines Mediawiki markup, HTML, and CSS), I don't see why its content shouldn't work just as well in en:WP as in de:WP. -- Hoary (talk) 22:31, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, Hoary, thank you for your answer. My vademecum has 35 pages, is a word-document and i can click on a headline and directly jump at the info i need in the document. I love my vademecum. It has stored all i've learned over the years concerning formatting. I've written already 13 articles for the german wikipedia and they were well received. I'm not so much of a technicfreak, unfortunately - i need everything explained in "grandma"-terms :-) and my vademecum does that :-). I did not understand your reference that not using a template is an option. I have no idea, how at all then i would have to format things. I do use these templates often and in this special example, i quote from an article in a book with several articles from different authors. I can give the pages of the individual article with |pages=1-4 for example, but then i do need an additional item, how i can give the info that the quote is on page 3 - and i just can't figure out to do this. In the german formatting it's easy, there is a tag for the complete number of pages |Seiten= and another one called Fundstelle (place where the quote can be found |Fundstelle=S. 3. Could you help with this perhaps? That would be so kind, because i really need to figure out, how to give the info. Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 22:50, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Something you can do is simply copy the German template, de:Vorlage:Zitat to your own userspace, as I've done at User:Vexations/templates/Zitat and then use that template instead, so I would use something like which renders as
{{User:Vexations/templates/Zitat |Text= Denn Malerei muss nicht nur mit dem Pinsel passieren, sondern für mich heißt Malerei, mit Formen und Farben zu spielen |Autor= Achim Zeman |Quelle= RP Online |lang= de |vor= |nach= |Umschrift= |Übersetzung= Painting must not only happen with the brush, but for me painting means playing with shapes and colours. |ref=<ref>https://rp-online.de/nrw/staedte/radevormwald/wand-an-der-weststrasse-3-in-bewegung_aid-18731699</ref> }}

::Thank you very much, Vexations. I will try this. Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 05:38, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
- Gyanda, this is how I used the templates I quoted above, Lourdes 00:44, 7 August 2018 (UTC):

- I still need a solution for the problem to quote from a book with articles of several authors. Using this template cite book, i can only give the tag |pages= once and there i give the total pages of the article, like |pages=12-14 - but then i would need an additional tag so that i can name the special page, of the quote, like "here p. 11"... in german, we have this distinction: a. pages in total and b. "Fundstelle", for the page of the quote - just can't figure out to get this done and i need this specification to be able to also name the page of the quote. Any suggestions, how i could get this done, would be more than welcome!!! Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 05:38, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Finding an image
[edit]There is this image that I found in althistory.wikia of a reconstructed Imperial Inca banner that apparently is sourced from Wikimedia project. Looking around with tineye, I found several matches, however after clicking the respective link the only result is the current used version of the banner in commons; which is frankly much uglier (and inaccurate).
Now, I am not sure why tineye is failing to see the differences between the images or if the image from althistory.wikia is indeed in Commons somewhere; but I would really appreciate some help with finding where it came from--Plank (talk) 20:43, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- The version at althistory.wikia is istself licensed under a compatible license, and it claims to be "sourced from" the image at commons. I think it is appropriate to interpret these statements at althistory.wikia as follows: that image is licensed to you under the GDFL, and it derived from (i.e., is a modified version of) the one at commons. Therefore, you are free to upload the althistory.wikia image to commons. as long as you attribute it back to althistory.wikia. -Arch dude (talk) 21:44, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- I speculate that tineye is oriented toward comparing JPGs and GIFs, while these are SVGs. -Arch dude (talk) 21:47, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
