Oleg Bezuglov - <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/> in the code

Hello,

I am trying to figure out the reason for the <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/> in the page source code of Oleg Bezuglov. The article was patrolled and reviewed, but still has this meta parameter. The article was nominated for deletion shortly after it was created, and I assume that it might have been a reason for the meta tag to appear in the first place. Subsequently, the AfD was resolved with keep. I would appreciate your input! --Fiddler11 04:19, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Alignment of quote box

I've been trying to improve the layout of Weedville, Arizona. It has a block quote using template quote box. If I use the "center" alignment, it seems to center it within the width of the page, even though there is an infobox on the right. With this alignment, the quote box doesn't look good abutting the infobox. If I use the "left" alignment (as it is presently), the box is moved to the left as expected and text is allowed to flow into the space between the quote box and the infobox. This can be OK with a wide enough screen, but if I reduce the width of the window, it get to a point were it doesn't look good at all, with lines with one or two words. At one width, the letter "A" is all that is between the boxes. Is there a better alignment method? MB 04:52, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The block quote box was highly inappropriate, since it wasn't even about the town; so I simply removed the box and left the text as normal text (but gave the chapter and verse). --Orange Mike | Talk 05:31, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request to edit the title of the page.

Hello, I have a request to edit the title of one of your page. The page is Adam's Bridge. I request to change the title of this page from "Adam's Bridge" to "Rama Setu" as the bridge made by Lord Rama and the real name of the bridge(setu) is "Rama Setu" not "Adam's Bridge". We know Independent Olympians at Olympics use Olympic flag and Olympic Anthem, what authorized neutral athletes (ANA) will use at 2017 World Championships in Athletics?

  • Use Anthem for ceremony for if get gold medal

@Simon 1996: Simon, please stop posting this question in multiple locations. You have posted here, at the article talk page and at mine and another editor's talk pages. Also you have removed your previous thread from this page and copied the responses to the article talk page. You should not have done this as it involved alterations to other editors' responses. In answer to what is perceived to be your question (I.e. what flags and anthems will neutral athletes use), we at the help desk do not know. It is the desk for help in how to edit Wikipedia. If you do not get the information via the article TP, would suggest you follow the advice previously given and ask at the reference desk (click the link) where specialists are available to help you. Can the categories displayed at the bottom of an article differ from the categories that include the article?

I've recently been categorizing articles on biological taxa by their Linnean rank and geologic age, so, for example if you wanted to know what families of living things were alive right before or after the extinction that killed the dinosaurs, you could respectively visit Category:Maastrichtian taxonomic families or Category:Danian taxonomic families.

The problem is that while most taxa were reasonably short-lived, some lasted a very long time. For instance the species Triops cancriformis first evolved during the Norian age of the Late Triassic and persists to this very day, passing through roughly 40(!) geological ages that it would need to be categorized under (most species go extinct within one or two ages). I've just been tolerating the need to heavily categorize the odd exceptionally long-lived taxon, but other users have reasonably objected to the large numbers of categories those articles required.

So, for our buddy Triops is there any way I could, say, include it in those 40 categories but have the category section at the bottom of the page only display links to "Category:Norian species first appearances, Category:Rhaetian species, Category:Jurassic species, Category:Cretaceous species, and Category:Cenozoic species"? Hello, Abyssal. WP:HIDDENCAT certainly exist, but whether it is appropriate to use them for this purpose or not, I'm not sure. I'm a little concerned that this work is original research, as you are implicitly adding information to the articles which is not directly in the sources. Hidden cats are kind of like what I mean, but that would hide it across very article that uses the category. I only want to hide categories situationally on articles about long-lived taxa that would become cluttered by the large numbers of geological age categories they require. I don't understand the comment about original research. All of my categorization was based on information already in the articles. Abyssal (talk) 16:04, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Those concerns have been brought up by a few editors at the articles in addition to the category overkill. The general issue is that we already often have a category for "group arising in X age", but listing all the categories when it was extant whether hidden or not seems to be setting up cumbersome additions to categories. It has been suggested that articles stick to just when a group arose and when it became extinct for two categories at most. The kind of things being proposed by Abyssal probably needs some higher level consensus than just individual talk pages, but I'm also not sure where such a discussion would be most appropriate in terms of Wikiprojects, etc. Kingofaces43 (talk) 17:31, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia page for our organization - non-profit, for academic institutions

Our group, Technology Transfer Partners, recently had our page deleted (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Technology_Transfer_Partners). I understand you do not want to promote businesses or other blatantly for-profit pages, but our group consists solely of universities, colleges, and K-12 institutions from around the world sharing information about the use of technology. Membership and conferences are free of charge.

Yes, we share the use of one company's products - Micro Focus - BUT we are not paid by them. They sponsor our meetings but do not control their content. Our group is independent. (https://thettp.org/) And although we do like their technologies, we are quite vocal about flaws, and actually have input to the engineers to express these opinions. In addition, we discuss numerous technologies and software solutions being used by our members, not just those made by Micro Focus. Our lists are full of questions asked and answered by our members, so it is a great source of help on a variety of topics.

We would really appreciate being visible to other schools to which we could be of help. We will have collaborators on editing the page, but first our page has to stay up!

Hello, Kborecky. I'm afraid that, like many people, you misunderstand the purpose of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not for you (or anyone) to promote you - it makes no difference whether you are commercial or non-profit: Wikipedia is not for putting information about you out to the world, it is for summarising information which people who have no connection with you have already chosen to publish. If there is material about you, written and published (in reliable organs) by people who have no connection with you, then there can be an article about you, summarising what those independent sources say. (If there is little or no such material, then no article will be accepted, however it is written). It will not be your article, and you will have no control over the contents or presentation: your involvement will be limited to suggesting improvements, for others to decide upon. Hello @Vikas chhabrs:, to change the name of your registered account, please see Wikipedia:Changing_username and Wikipedia:Changing_username/Simple for instructions. As you have only made a few edits so far, you could also simply "abandon" your old account without the need for formalities: create a completely new account with the correct spelling, and place a short notice on your old userpage pointing to the new userpage. The google search summary

I know google search pulls info from wikipedia for the panel on the right of the screen, taking a selection of google images and a summary of the lede from wikipedia (where it is the highest ranking site) BUT if I google for example 'Jeff Forshaw' it comes up with his images and name, and then under it it says 'British author', does anyone know where it is pulling that information from? whilst he has co-authored books, I never referred to him on his page as an author, and really that summary should say 'British scientist' or at least 'British scientist and author'. It's a minor technical detail but I am curious where it comes from. Do wikipedia pages get assigned a summary category when they are reviewed shortly after the page is created? Hey Mramoeba. Google's summary box may often draw from Wikipedia, but it may also draw from many other sources, or even from outdated or vandalized versions of Wikipedia or Wikipedia mirrors. Thanks, I guessed that it probably pulls from the top ranked site(s) on its algorithm, it just seems odd that it uses Wiki for the lions share of the summary box but not for the heading. My best guess would be possibly pulling from Amazon where his co-authored books are sold. What is SORTKEY/Default sort?

I create quite a few new articles, especially on opera singers, and I find that after they have gone "live" another editor often comes along and adds DEFAULTSORT at the top of the category section which is nothing but the singer's name with the last name first, for example on an article I created Anita Välkki another editor added "DEFAULTSORT:Valkki, Anita" and an article I created yesterday Maria Flécheux today an editor added "DEFAULTSORT:Flécheux, Maria" with an edit summary "defaultsort per WP:SORTKEY".I have not the faintest idea what this means so clicked on WP:SORTKEY and am still none the wiser, it is just a lot of gobbledeegook to me. What is this and why is it necessary? I don't really like to create articles with mistakes for others to fix, so when are you supposed to add this "DEFAULTSORT"?Smeat75 (talk) 22:44, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Smeat75: {{DEFAULTSORT:Flécheux, Maria}} means that Maria Flécheux is sorted by surname in categories, e.g. under "F" in Category:French operatic sopranos. Without the code she would sort under "M". PrimeHunter (talk) 23:05, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
