Please does anyone know of a simple tool to count incoming links to a page, ideally limited to links from the article namespace? I can page through Special:WhatLinksHere and count manually, but this gets tedious for articles with many thousands of incoming links. I've searched through tools.wmflabs.org and found a tool that works for disambiguation pages only, but I'm hoping for something similar that includes ordinary articles. Thanks, Certes (talk) 00:32, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See Help:What links here#Number of links. There has been a request to integrate a function similar to this into Mediawiki since 2005 Phab:T6394. Nanonic (talk) 00:53, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the speedy response, Nanonic. Dispenser's tool looks like exactly what I was seeking. Certes (talk) 00:56, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to create a permalink to a section (i.e. "question") on a reference desk? --2606:A000:4C0C:E200:1821:CD59:E35A:CB68 (talk) 00:51, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You would begin to do this in the same way as any permalink. Access the page and then click 'Permanent Link' and once done, click the section heading you want and copy the URL including the oldid. For example, the permalink for this page when you edited it would be https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&oldid=736660361 (or Special:Permalink/736660361) and the permalink for the section at that point would be https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&oldid=736660361#Refdesk_permalink (or Special:Permalink/736660361#Refdesk_permalink). As with any permalink, this links to that particular version of the page. Any subsequent edits are not included. Nanonic (talk) 01:05, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Nanonic! Works fine, I especially like the 2nd option, making it an internal link. 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:1821:CD59:E35A:CB68 (talk) 01:32, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Disable mobile site?

[edit]

Is there a way I can permanently disable the mobile version of Wikipedia and always show the desktop version instead? I use Wikipedia on a mobile device but find the desktop version much better. Thanks!AnAwesomeArticleEditor (talk) 01:24, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@AnAwesomeArticleEditor: At the bottom of every mobile page should be a button to switch over the desktop mode. The preference should be saved as a cookie and will stick until you clear those. You can also click on this link in mobile view and it will do the same thing. --Majora (talk) 01:52, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it should be saved as a cookie, but in my experience (Android, Chrome) it isn't. I have failed to find a way to achieve what AnAwesomeArticleEditor wants. Maproom (talk) 07:33, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

List of infobox template subset

[edit]

I need a relatively easy way to produce a list of infobox templates that support the individual coordinates-related parameters. For this purpose it would probably be sufficient to list templates that support one of |latitude=, |latd=, or |lat_d= (or 3 separate lists). To be clear, I'm talking about templates, not template transclusions. ―Mandruss  02:43, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Mandruss:

Latd search, Lat_d search, the latitude one is a little bit trickier. Give me a few minutes while I read up on cirrus searches. --Majora (talk) 03:09, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Mandruss: So I did figure out a better way to do this but the wikimarkup is having a fit with the renaming so they are just going to have to be full links. There is one catch. I can't figure out how to filter out the subpages. So the /doc, /sandbox, ect for various templates are in there too. If anyone else can figure that out and let both of us know that would be great. --Majora (talk) 03:35, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Mandruss and Majora: Adding "-intitle:doc -intitle:sandbox -intitle:testcases" to the searches eliminates many of the unwanted pages. -- John of Reading (talk) 04:47, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Youshallnotpassss, you're already logged in. We know this because when you are signing your post, it puts your username and a timestamp. What you may be seeing is that you don't have a user page which is true. That is why your name is showing up in red. Once you create the page, which you can do without needing the password (since you're logged in), your name will show up in blue. †Dismas†|(talk) 11:36, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi-I am new but an expert in the field of Northern Soul music following 43 years in the business. Are my edits ok as error messages keep cropping up? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaynorjones (talkcontribs) 09:33, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The error messages said "Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page)", and the words "help page" were in blue to show that they were a wikilink, in this case to Help:Cite errors/Cite error included ref. In any case, your edit was reverted as you hadn't understood what is required for a reference. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:28, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Your first article. If you'd like help going through the steps below, try the Article Wizard.
  1. Ensure that you have an account and you are logged in. If you don't have an account, create one
  2. Learn the basics of editing with the Wikipedia:Tutorial
  3. Make sure the subject is notable enough to warrant a stand-alone article
  4. Gather reliable sources to cite in the article
  5. Make sure no article on the subject exists under a different title by typing the subject into the search box and clicking 'Search'
  6. Type the page name in the search box and click 'Go'
  7. Click 'Create this page'
  8. Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout guidelines
  9. Be aware that Wikipedia deletes thousands of new articles for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are at extra risk of deletion, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones.
I recommend not creating an article about yourself, however, as you have a conflict of interest. Also, please sign your post by typing four tildes (~~~~) or clicking the signature button above the edit box which looks like this: . Do not sign in articles. Mitchell Hamline School of Law page

[edit]

There are problems with the Wikipedia page for Mitchell Hamline School of Law. The page has received very little editorial attention since the school was created on Dec. 10 2015, after the combination of William Mitchell College of Law and Hamline School of Law. I believe merging the William Mitchell page and the Hamline Law page is appropriate as a way to show that the two schools are now a part of Mitchell Hamline School of Law. Some Wikipedia editors argue that's recentism, but I disagree. Key point: the William Mitchell page contains incorrect information, since the school no longer exists. It also mixes in current information about Mitchell Hamline School of Law, such as the web address. Some of the same issues are on the Hamline Wikipedia page as well. Meanwhile the Mitchell Hamline School of Law page doesn't include the most basic information about the school, such as its physical address. Full disclosure: I'm an employee of Mitchell Hamline School of Law who has requested something be done with this page in the past on the William Mitchell and Mitchell Hamline talk pages, but nothing has been done. Posttim (talk) 16:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

William Mitchell was a much bigger school. It may be appropriate to rename it to Mitchell Hamline School while retaining a separate article about former Hamline School. Ruslik_Zero 17:46, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

COI

[edit]

I noticed that a recent edit at World Aquarium was made by user, World Aquarium. The edits weren't particularly ad-like, though he introduced a bunch of grammatical errors which I tried to correct. I'm not sure of all the steps to take to notify the user of COI; could someone here do this please? (and maybe instruction so I can take care of it myself in the future). I think I'll go back and put a refimprove tag on it, and maybe search for some references when I have time for a proper google search. Thanks, Leschnei (talk) 18:40, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Warned. TimothyJosephWood 19:06, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You can use {{Uw-coi}} to give a templated warning to someone. There's also {{Welcome-COI}} if it's among their first few edits. If the problems persist, you can raise the issue at WP:UAA (for user name violations), WP:AIV (for spamming), WP:COIN (for issues directly related to COI), or WP:ANI (for other behavioral issues). Generally, I find most of these noticeboards unnecessary, as people are usually reasonable when approached politely. If they're not doing anything disruptive, I sometimes just ignore it, but I keep an eye on the account to make sure it doesn't start spamming or whitewashing. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 22:08, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks TimothyJosephWood and thanks for the tips NinjaRobotPirate. I'll make a note for next time. Leschnei (talk) 22:35, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, it looks as if your edit here successfully removed the information. It may be a temporary anomaly which means it still appears on the mobile site. Eagleash (talk) 19:44, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Bossladymira:, you may also want to read WP:COI, as it is apparent that you have some sort of conflict of interest in regarding the material/article that you are editing. Reagrds. —MeowMoon (talk) 20:24, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The conflict of interest here appears to be a minor issue, and probably less important than the presumption of privacy for living subjects, especially for persons who are relatively unknown, as detailed at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. The material in question was unsourced, and therefore subject to removal. However, if more caution is wanted, changes can be requested by using the {{request edit}} template on the article's talk page. —Coconutporkpie (talk) 22:13, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

articles for newspaper

I have switched computers and do not have the correct website to receive the weekly articles for Sierra County Sentinel.

If you could please send me the link to have the weekly articles I would appreciate it.

Hello Tina,
Although this help desk is for those who need assistance editing or using Wikipedia, we realize that sometimes people come here when they are unsure where to go for other help. That being said, the link to the online version of the newspaper is:
  • "Sierra County Sentinel Online Newspaper". newspapersmagazine.com.
There you will find a link to 'Manage your subscription' which hopefully will be what you need. --I hope this helps. 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:4BF:6AED:D301:8167 (talk) 00:09, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

In the see also section of Gandhi (film) there is a link to Jinnah (film), but links as Jinnah when I changed it to Jinnah (film) another user reverted and pointed to a WP:PIPELINK, I read it and found nothing wrong with my edit. If I understand correctly, since Jinnah and Jinnah (film) are distinct topics, so the current linking is misleading. I would like some assistance on this.--NadirAli نادر علی (talk) 23:16, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What MarnetteD did was correct. It should not appear to the reader as "Jinnah (film)" because that is not the name of the film. The name is simply "Jinnah". The reader likely doesn't care that we have other articles with a similar title to "Jinnah". And the text after the link, "Jinnah a 1998 film", makes it clear that the link is taking them to the article about the film. †Dismas†|(talk) 23:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, edits like this are done quite often. Here is an example of a similar edit that I made earlier today. †Dismas†|(talk) 23:27, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)x2 As noted on the OPs talk page the italicization of the film title makes it a distinct topic from the article about the person. For those of you who want to check I have implemented a compromise here Gandhi (film)#See also (sorry Dismas when the OP posted this I hadn't made that edit yet) MarnetteD|Talk 23:30, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
