JOHN M. GREER
[edit]WHERE IS HE AND THE NORTH AMERICAN NATIVE EXTERMINATIONS PAGE? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.229.181.177 (talk) 13:53, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- What are you referring to? I made both Wikipedia and Google searches and don't know which John M. Greer you mean. Wikipedia has no mention of the name. The Google search found several people but I didn't find any connection to "NORTH AMERICAN NATIVE EXTERMINATIONS". PrimeHunter (talk) 14:00, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- I think the OP is probably suggesting that there ought to be such pages. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 212.95.237.92 (talk) 14:59, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- Do you mean two completely unrelated pages, one about somebody named John M. Greer and one about North American Native Exterminations? That would be an odd post but I can find no connection between the name and the topic so that may be it. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:00, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

- Wikipedia has an article on John Michael Greer, an occultist and leading druid. I doubt he was involved in any way in any Native American exterminations. Maproom (talk) 16:49, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

orphan articles
[edit]I was trying to find Lord Dennings judgment about small print in contract law. I found a reference to a case " Anglo Continental Holidays Ltd v Typaldos Lines (London) Ltd " on another site so looked it up on here. the page existed but it no content except an invitation to provide some. I simultaneously had found he answer on another site. I felt inspired to join and provide he answer in the empty subject heading. In order to check that all was well I looked up simply "Lord Denning" and found full and comprehensive information including the case I was originally looking for, but not the article I had just filled in, which included the name "Lord Denning". I now feel my efforts were superfluous and would be much better replaced with a clear sign-post to the main article about Lord Denning. I suspect that in many cases a better connection tag would be more useful than filling empty headings. I don't know if this is within the competence of us keen contributors
also I don't understand this signing your post with tildes thing so I will try user name is Desperateforknowledge (talk) 15:40, 23 January 2015 (UTC) desperateforknowledge
- You have created an article, with the rather long name Anglo Continental Holidays Ltd v Typaldos Lines (London) Ltd. It needs some work, it it is to remain as an article, as it currently lacks all references to external sources. There is no link to it from the Lord Denning article, because no-one has created one. You did correctly sign your post above, I assume by using four tildes ~~~~ in the recommended way. Maproom (talk) 16:37, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- I see that the article you created is linked to from List of cases involving Lord Denning. Maproom (talk) 16:42, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- I am afraid that the common names for legal cases can sometimes be rather long and there's really no way to avoid it. This one is short compared to the titles of some of our legal case articles! I'll wikikgnome it and see if I can help out.--ukexpat (talk) 13:20, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
Capitalization in a Wikipedia article
[edit]Let's say that the name of an article in Wikipedia is, for example, "Murder of John Smith". Let's also assume that the article begins with the following sentence: "The murder of John Smith occurred on January 1, 1972." Oftentimes, we will bold some words in the introductory sentence if they match the name of the article. So, in a case like this, would it be correct to have the first sentence read: "The murder of John Smith occurred on January 1, 1972."? Or should it be: "The Murder of John Smith occurred on January 1, 1972."? So, is the "m" in the word "murder" capitalized or lower-case? In a normal English sentence, we would not use a capital "m" in this case. But, in Wikipedia, I often see the letter capitalized (when it normally would not be) simply because it matches the exact title of the article. Is there some rule, policy, convention, etc., to be followed? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:49, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- WP:LEADSENTENCE says: "When the page title is used as the subject of the first sentence, it may appear in a slightly different form, and it may include variations, including synonyms." Lowercasing that M would qualify as a slightly different form, and it would look more natural with it lowercased. I'm about 99% certain it should be lowercased. ―Mandruss ☎ 17:58, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- 100% lower case in this instance. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:22, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
- I agree, it must be lower case. If the lead sentence does not repeat the title exactly the bolding would be adjusted to suit, e.g.; "John Smith was murdered on January 1, 1972..." -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 14:02, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
- To editors Dodger67 and Joseph A. Spadaro: I don't believe this is correct. According to the relevant style guideline, there should be absolutely no bolding if the title does not actually appear. (The example given is The Beatles' rise to prominence in the United States at The Beatles in the United States.) Anon126 (notify me of responses! / talk / contribs) 00:18, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Anon126: The second example at that link would appear be an exact equivalent to the John Smith murder example. ―Mandruss ☎ 00:27, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- To editor Mandruss: I was referring to Roger's example of "John Smith was murdered...", not the original inquiry. Anon126 (notify me of responses! / talk / contribs) 00:30, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. What would be the situation here, with this article: Espousals of the Blessed Virgin Mary? Is the word "espousals" a proper noun? Should it be upper-case "E" or lower-case "e"? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 15:25, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
- "Espousals" is a part of that proper name, the name of the feast, and therefore should be capitalized. ―Mandruss ☎ 18:49, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Who are editors?

are editors people who know me? If not, who are they?Daddydewdrop (talk) 19:38, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- People who edit the article about you can be anyone, not just people who know you. This is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. APK whisper in my ear 20:57, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- And indeed, Daddydewdrop, people who know you are advised to be cautious in editing an article about you, because they may have a conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 21:35, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
How do you get more eyes on a discussion?
[edit]A discussion was started on a core policy page (since moved to a subpage), it’s got an RFC on it and a note at WP:Village pump (policy), provisional changes have been made to some articles… yet there is very little involvement from more than a few editors. What else could be done to get more editors involved? Or is that it? Or should I be asking this somewhere else? (Note: I tried asking this same question at the Teahouse, but failed to get any kind of answer to what I asked due to misunderstandings.) —174.141.182.82 (talk) 22:07, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- I understand the desire to look for "more eyes" when an RfC isn't going your way. If the opposes were all newbies, I'd be more concerned about the number of eyes, but there appears to be at least some experience among them. I think the thing to do is just let it run its course as is and, if it fails, lick your wounds and move on. In any case, I don't know of a way to get more eyes than you already have, short of posting notifications in venues that aren't related to the topic. ―Mandruss ☎ 18:54, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
- All right, thanks. —174.141.182.82 (talk) 22:21, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
