High profile users who are dishonest - Who can I talk to about them?

[edit]

Hello,

I've had a problem with certain users on wikipedia, usually high profile. I agree with many of them, but some seem to be a little dishonest and biased. Is there anyone I can talk to regarding this problem? Olehal09 (talk) 02:01, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First, understand that our perception is sometimes unreliable, due to the limitations of online communication. Read WP:AGF and ask yourself how much objective evidence you have to support your instincts. Consider discussing the issues with the users on their user talk pages; communication sometimes helps and rarely hurts. Failing that, see WP:CONDUCT for a list of behavioral policies. If you feel any of them are being violated, you can open a complaint at WP:ANI. Failing that, you can simply learn to live with them, or avoid them by working on different articles. If you wish to discuss further, you can do so here or contact someone on their user talk page; you can reach mine, for example, by clicking on the telephone symbol. ---> ―Mandruss  02:14, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, and though I am making every effort to AGF with regard to you too, this declaration of your apparent intentions (and of your opinion of Wikipedians generally) is not likely to promote good relations with other editors, especially those who edit actively and with whom you should be collaborating to improve articles here. You might want to consider whether that is really the best and most constructive way to start a relationship. General Ization Talk 02:25, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oleha is an s.p.a. with some WP:FRINGE ideas about race, about whether discrimination exists in the United States nowadays[!], etc. His idea of "dishonest", bluntly, is probably applicable to 98% of the editors here. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:43, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Mike. I asked if there is a consensus. Is it true that women and minroites are/have been discriminated by individuals, are there any real proof. Or are there other reasons than just their race or sex. If this is fringe, there is something really wrong with Wikipedia. Thoughts are not a crime. Olehal09 (talk) 18:59, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
True, but failure to share your thoughts on any given topic, nor thinking them so unreasonable as to be unworthy of debate, does not make any other editor dishonest. Not having been a party to any discussions with you, I can't say for certain that this is what is happening here, but based on Mike's and your comment I'd wager that it is. In any case, Mandruss's advice above is good advice. General Ization Talk 19:07, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Since this discussion is going on at ANI, this is probably a good place to stop here. General Ization Talk 19:58, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Orangemike: Off-topic question: I give up: What do you mean, above, by "s.p.a."? --Thnidu (talk) 21:49, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your question is hard to understand. You have edited neither Black Magic (Little Mix song) nor Word Up! (song) today. Maproom (talk) 17:04, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's clearly about Little Mix discography in the section heading, IP talk page and contributions. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:55, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Changing page title

[edit]

I wish to change the capitalization of a page title from "Global economic prospects" to "Global Economic Prospects".

Adding the following did not change the way the title appears:

{{DISPLAYTITLE:Global Economic Prospects}}

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GL19GL61 (talkcontribs)

@GL19GL61: DISPLAYTITLE can only change capitalization of the first letter in the whole title. I have moved the article to Global Economic Prospects instead. This also changes the title everywhere while DISPLAYTITLE only affects what is shown at top of the article page. Your account has too few edits to move pages (you have 6 and need 10). template issue

[edit]

I am writing because new notices have mysteriously appeared in reference to the words, biophony, geophony and anthropophony, suggesting that the “…topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia’s general notability guideline.” I thought that all of those issues had been adequately covered in the bibliography section considering all of the peer-reviewed publications that have been issued since 1998, the year biophony was first published. Apparently, these were added again and I am wondering why this is happening? I believe I have met all of the Wiki standards requested in this matte.

If, indeed, the articles require more due diligence, please tell me how they can be improved so that we can insure no further notices attached to the words. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.212.58.72 (talk) 18:17, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(Noting that you have edited the articles listed as user Biophony, including removing the templates, but posted here without logging in.) Have you contacted Ukexpat, the editor who placed the templates, to examine their reasoning for placing the notices? General Ization Talk 19:14, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is about the articles Biophony, Geophony, and Anthropophony. All three articles are referenced almost entirely to inaccessible publications by Bernie Krause, and, like the Krause article, were written mostly by Biophony, who has contributed little else. I believe that the {{notability}} tags placed by Ukexpat are warranted, and shall replace them. Maproom (talk) 19:29, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And add Niche hypothesis to the list. Maproom (talk) 19:34, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That was exactly my reasoning - insufficient reliable sources to demonstrate notability.--ukexpat (talk) 19:43, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There's also the problem that the articles are largely about the terms, not the topics. Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Maproom (talk) 20:12, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
... but please don't add protologisms to Wiktionary until they are used by others. Dbfirs 20:46, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox box questions

[edit]

Attn Please click edit next to this header to read this post as my examples are screwed up outside of edit mode.

I was looking into putting userboxes on my userpage. But I would like them enclosed in a userbox box. The only template that I have seen makes them appear in a vertical column like this ([ U ]=Userbox)-

______________
| TEXT HERE |
| |
|[ U ]|
|[ U ]|
|[ U ]|
|[ U ]|
|____________|

I would like a template thay encases them horizontally instead of vertically so like this-

__________________________________________________
| TEXT HERE |
| |
|[ U ] [ U ] [ U ] [ U ]|
|________________________________________________|

Could someone either refer me to an existing one or create me one if they have the expertise? Wikipenguin 8 (talk) 19:16, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed your examples so they show correctly, revert me if you don't like it. -- GB fan 19:19, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipenguin 8: Note that many users have mobile devices with narrow windows. I don't know whether we have a template for it but you could make a table like Wikipedia:Userboxes#Using tables, as I see you have already done. Here is a way to get a border around it:
TEXT HERE
This user enjoys jazz-rock fusion.
This user helps out newcomers.
This user prefers warm weather.
PrimeHunter (talk) 22:59, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have two others that I want to submit... when I go my sandbox it is full of the text, etc for the article i just submitted. how can i get a new page?

[edit]

I have created an article in my sandbox and posted for submission.

I have two others that I want to submit... when I go my sandbox it is full of the text, etc for the article i just submitted. how can i get a new page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MeaghanMcCann (talkcontribs) 20:13, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I doesn't look like you have submitted anything yet. To submit the draft, edit it to add the code {{Subst:Submit}} to the top and save the page. I will say that the draft needs a lot of work before it is accepted. It needs much better sources than the subject's LinkedIn account and you need to read what WP:EL says about using external links in the text of the article. --ukexpat (talk) 20:23, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@MeaghanMcCann: To answer your question, you can create another sandbox by creating User:MeaghanMcCann/sandbox2, User:MeaghanMcCann/sandbox3, etc. Also, it's better to put drafts at something like Draft:Ron Crabtree instead of in your user sandbox. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:27, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Change of username

[edit]

I need to change my username somehow it violates wiki rules, how can I do it without loosing my sandbox work? (Astaridreams (talk) 20:34, 10 August 2015 (UTC))[reply]

If you request a change of username and this is improved and implemented, then your user pages (including your sandbox) will be automatically renamed as part of that process. There is, however, nothing in your user sandbox except a redirect to Draft:Astari Nite, which is where your draft was moved on 13 July. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:06, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Theory Regarding the Origin and Future of Our Planet Earth

[edit]

How do I create a page on Wikipedia?

I plan to publish a white paper this year to disclose a new and possibly controversial theory regarding the Origin and future of our planet Earth. The page of the same title on Wikipedia will enable the scientific community to participate in development, commentary, documentation or criticism of this theory. This page WILL NOT be used to promote the white paper, although the existence of the white paper may be mentioned on the web page.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Centvrio8513 (talkcontribs) 20:44, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not the place to publish your original research. Once your white paper has been published and your theories have been discussed in peer reviewed publications, then it might be appropriate for someone to create a Wikipedia page on the theory, but not until then. Even then, conflict of interest should prevent you from creating the Wikipedia page yourself. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:47, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
