I'm sorry. This is Wikipedia, a free encyclopaedia, and this help desk is for asking questions about using and finding your way around the site. I have removed your off-wiki contact details, which should not be published here as it says at the top of the page. Good luck with your search for support, but Wikipedia cannot be used for this purpose. - Karenjc (talk) 07:51, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A dispute

[edit]

Hi there,

I wanted to create an article about my professor whose name is fong chan, but the people who chat with me did not believe me that he has contributed the field amazingly, not they did no accept my proofs. When I asked them to check it by themselves, they did not do it as well. Please help me about it — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.236.31.67 (talk) 07:26, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds as if the people you are talking to have questioned whether the Professor is notable: this is a word used in a special way in Wikipedia, and people often misunderstand it. It is not about whether the person is important or has contributed, but solely about whether other people have written about the subject in reliable places. So the question comes down to, Are there articles about Fong in reliable sources such as major newspapers or peer-reviewed journals? If there are, then he meets the criteria for notability; if there are not, then he does not, and there cannot be an article about him. (The sources do not have to be in English, though English sources are preferable, if they exist). I suggest you read WP:PROF and WP:YFA. --ColinFine (talk) 08:15, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your IP address seems only to have made two edits: you submitted a blank article with no content, and you posted this question. Obviously a blank article with no content can't be put into the encyclopaedia, and I can't see any sign of the proofs you mention. If by "the people who chat with me" you're referring to a discussion in our IRC channel, that's a useful place to ask questions, but the people there won't write your article or go and look for sources that discuss him. I see you already have a message on your talk page from the volunteers at the WP:Teahouse, who also offer help to new users. - Karenjc (talk) 08:33, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About my bot

[edit]

I am applying to have a bot flag, so please go to here and discuss about it. Also, my bot have did an edit and I hope that an administrator may delete this page. Thanks.--Gabrielchihonglee (talk) 09:11, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted it. The help desk is not the right place to ask for input. Perform the step "Click here and add {{BRFA}}" at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:08, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have problem with my carravelle bus which is brain box. can someone help me get a better one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.71.154.21 (talk) 11:26, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Cite template for inscription on a monument or memorial

[edit]

Is there a cite template for properly formatting a reference to the inscription on a memorial or monument? Most of the references in the article use the "cite"-type of templates but I've been unsucessful at finding one for referencing such inscriptions. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:40, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cite sign maybe? It includes "signs, plaques, and other non-video visuals". Samwalton9 (talk) 11:49, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

web cite: vertical bar in title

[edit]

When using {{web cite}}, how do I escape a vertical bar (|) in a value for the title parameter? NE Ent 15:23, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

{{!}} often works. You can also use |
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:29, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, tried those, but both the template and the entity reference render instead of the symbol. web cite is using the new lua language. It's the second reference on Traffic Circle, by the way. NE Ent 17:10, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't mean for you to copy the markup that made it look pretty on this page. What I meant was this this:
{{cite web |title=The Day {{!}} Salem Four Corners traffic circle to start rounding into shape {{!}} News from southeastern Connecticut |last=Johnson |first=Jeffrey A |url=http://www.theday.com/article/20120806/NWS01/308069969/1044 |date=06-08-2012 |accessdate=06-10-2013 |publisher=The Day}}
which gives:
Johnson, Jeffrey A (06-08-2012). "The Day | Salem Four Corners traffic circle to start rounding into shape | News from southeastern Connecticut". The Day. Retrieved 06-10-2013. {{cite web}}: Check date values in: |accessdate= and |date= (help)
However, because you are citing a newspaper, {{cite news}} is probably a better choice. Concider this:
{{cite news |title=Salem Four Corners traffic circle to start rounding into shape |last=Johnson |first=Jeffrey A. |url=http://www.theday.com/article/20120806/NWS01/308069969/1044 |date=6 August 2012 |newspaper=[[The Day (New London)|The Day]]}}
which gives:
Johnson, Jeffrey A. (6 August 2012). "Salem Four Corners traffic circle to start rounding into shape". The Day.
What I changed and why: The original title in the citation should be just the article title. The added text "The Day" and "News from southeastern Connecticut" is not part of the title and if included corrupts the template's COinS metadata output; date format because as it was, the format doesn't comply with MOS:DATEFORMAT (and because 06-08-2012 is ambiguous: 6 August or 8 June?); |newspaper= instead of |publisher= because The Day is a newspaper so is properly italicized; the article is dated material so |accessdate= is relatively unimportant in comparison so I removed it.

Didn't see the Creek Indians mentioned in the above article

http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/creek-indians — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.37.249.184 (talk) 16:00, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think that category is listing current tribes, not historical ones. There is a Creek group in that category, Lower Muskogee Creek Tribe (East of the Mississippi). But historical groups shouldn't go in that category. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 16:10, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FRAUD and Missing Person on Wikipedia

[edit]

Walter Poenisch was the FIRST person to swim from Cuba to the U.S. A lawsuit was later filed in which both Ms. Nyad and the head of the US Swimming committee (her mentor and coach) acknowledged their fraudulent statements. Furthermore additional evidence was provided including documentation from Fidel Castro's office. Additional information can be found at http://614columbus.com/article/5998/1380303188/ and through the writer directly - Lori Gum and http://www.swim4peace.com/

If there is an error in an Wikipedia article, please start a discussion on that article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 23:40, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In July 1978, Walter Poenisch was reported to have swam from Cuba (Castro watched him swim from Cuba) and arrived in Little Duck Key in the Florida Keys on July 13 after 33.5 Hours swimming. He apparently did not follow guidelines for official recognition. Diana Nyad began her swim from Havana to Key West in 1979 on July 16th.[1] Nyad finally completed the trip in September 2013. Walter Poenisch claim still is in dispute as of September 2013."[2] OP probably want's Wikipedia to reflect OP's post. We don't yet have an Walter Poenisch article. I'll see if I can get a stub going. -- Jreferee (talk) 00:33, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Questions

[edit]

I have two questions! How can i change my signature, to add colors as some other editors, and can someone tell me what Gadget i should use and check in my preferences? Anastan (talk) 23:41, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:SIGNATURE. Dismas|(talk) 23:49, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Which gadgets you want to enable depend on what you want to do. For example, if you don't like the fundraising banner, you would check the box to hide it. The only gadget related to signatures is WP:LOCO RudolfRed (talk) 00:06, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
