Please run a length report on Fluorine. cut and paste the whole thing (different ways of measuring it). I can't access it now, so need it done. Thanks. 69.40.252.66 (talk) 00:45, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Commons image needs simple fix

[edit]

I've got an image hosted at commons, File:US-O6 insignia.svg, that should be mirrored horizontally - cf. reference at [1]. I see no option to upload a new version of the file at commons, and I wouldn't know how to do so otherwise - uploading to commons is an unholy pain in the rear. VanIsaacWScontribs 05:01, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you go to the file page and click the link labelled "description page there", you'll end up at the commons file page. Scroll down a bit, and just above the heading "File usage on Commons" you should see a link "Upload a new version of this file". Failing that, here is a direct link to the "re-upload" page for that file. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:33, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All I get is "Edit this file using an external application". I'll try out your link, but if this is anything like the last time I tried to do something at that cluster@#%& at commons, I'm not hopeful. VanIsaacWScontribs 08:50, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ευρηκα! Your direct link worked. Talk about a dysfunctional wiki project over there; they won't show you the upload link unless you are already logged in. No way they're going to make anything remotely user-friendly. Thanks for the assist. VanIsaacWScontribs 08:59, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone lend a hand at the above draft? Was asked to look. I spent a good chunk of time turning the "homemade" footnotes ("text[1]") into actual inline citations and fixing all the attribution but feel so apathetic about trying to turn this into a postable article.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit busy, but I took a look. The lead is all wrong (or missing). The first sentence should give a definition of Bina48. The article needs to be wikified. Way too much is unreferenced. It appears to be a bit promotional/advertisement like. Those are some basic things, and I'll probably post this on the talk page as well. In addition, I don't know what the author's plans were since it is in User:Flindiva/sandbox rather than User:Flindiva/Bina48, but they will need to be reminded to move the article rather than copying and pasting. Ryan Vesey Review me! 13:03, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not entirely, though it is embellished: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvcQCJpZJH8 Equazcion (talk) 17:13, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I went through it and removed most of the obvious dubious material. Haven't actually looked at the sources. Equazcion (talk) 17:37, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to all of you. Yes, everything you said Ryan! I had already mentioned to the creator the issue of moving it, and the correct name (see here), though the latter is not normally an issue unless the sandbox has a prior history so that when you move it you have to delete prior revisions. I just felt so blasé about working on it (still do really) but I'll pick up where others left off.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HARTSHORNE

[edit]

I had terrible trouble trying to understand through all the jargon how to send a simple email to you. maybe now I have found the way maybe I haven't.

my surname is Hartshorne and in your 'article' you state the pronoucing of it is harts'horne well in all my life (over 60) my name has always been pronounced hart'shorne and whenever it's been pronounced as you state I and other members of my family or friends who know me well have corrected the pronouncing to HART'SHORNE.

It arises from hartshorne a smelling salt used years ago and referred to in Georgette Hayer novels!!! It is the horne of the hart. Hart being the animal and the horne being used. Therefore Hart'shorne. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.221.19.155 (talk) 13:10, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article is making the point is that that it is pronounced Harts'horne, without a /sh/ digraph. Are you trying to say that there should be a /sh/ sound? I rather doubt it. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think the problem is the use of an apostrophe to indicate the syllables, it can easily be confused with the posessive "hart's horn". Roger (talk) 06:25, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

LOC id doesn't work

[edit]

For some reason the LOC id number here doesn't work properly in {LOC-image} template, leading to error page. Is it LOC's mismanagement? Brandmeistertalk 13:15, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are you using this Wikicode: {{LOC-image|cwp.4a40928}}?--ukexpat (talk) 13:20, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That renders as , which leads to an error report when followed. It's possible that there's a problem with the handle server at the LOC. If it doesn't clear up I'd suggest submitting the erroror report requested by that error hanling page. LeadSongDog come howl! 13:59, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The URL for the image in question is http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/ma0542/. {{LOC-image}} generates URLs beginning with http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp.
{{LOC-image}} links to http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/prokc.21468 but redirects to http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/prokc.21468/ My SWAG is that the LOC changed their linking at some point.

---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:37, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Made an update to the URL in the sandbox:

{{LOC-image/sandbox|cwp.4a40928}}

We need more testing to ensure this does not break anything. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:42, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't the point of using the Handle system that moving a file shouldn't break the linkage? It certainly seems to me that going to a fixed URL is a step backwards.LeadSongDog come howl! 18:43, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Meh, still reports "Handle Not Found". I left a plain external link in the file description. Brandmeistertalk 21:28, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The version in {{LOC-image/sandbox}} would break a lot of existing uses of {{LOC-image}} where the handle doesn't go to http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:53, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have posted the below to the Library of Congress via the form at http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cwp.4a40928 (if they make this link work then the form can be seen at http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp):
http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cwp.4a40928 doesn't work.
I'm trying to make a handle link to
http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/cwp.4a40928/
PrimeHunter (talk) 12:57, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I got a mail reply:
Thank you for contacting the Library of Congress about a handle address that is not working. We did not realize that we had missed registering handles for a large series of Civil War images. We will make plans to correct this error in the near future.
The handle that you were trying to cite, http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cwp.4a40928, will eventually be functional. In the meantime, if you need a URL to cite for this Web page you may use the URL that the handle will direct, http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/cwp.4a40928/ . This URL will also function as a permanent address.

Celebrity profile

[edit]

Hi there

I've recently taken over responsibility for some of the social media and online content of a UK based celebrity.

He would like to expand his profile on Wikipedia, to include an up to date biography, including details of all of his TV credits to date.

Unfortunatlely, his celebrity status has attracted a lot of unwanted attention and sometimes downright vile abuse from internet trolls.

Could you let me know how I would be able to create a Wikipedia profile that cannot be edited or contributed to by any 3rd party without approval from myself?

This is purely to prevent any profile created from being hijacked by Internet trolls.

Thank you

Kind regards

Iangrantsinger — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iangrantsinger (talkcontribs) 15:11, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No one controls a Wikipedia article or has approval rights - see WP:OWN - and because of your conflict of interest, you are strongly advised not to edit the article, but to use its talk page to suggest changes - please see WP:COI.--ukexpat (talk) 15:17, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[conflict edit] Basically, you can't. This is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which anyone can edit; nobody "owns" or can control an article on a subject. If you need something corrected, leave a note on the talk page. Please be aware, though, that while of course we try to watch out for actual vandalism, you have a strong conflict of interest in this matter, and should not be attempting to edit the article yourself. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If the page is being vandalized, you can ask that it be protected. See WP:Protect. That won't give you control over the page, though, as the other answers say. RudolfRed (talk) 15:32, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COI does not state that you cannot edit when you have a conflict of interest— the section WP:COI compliance has a number of guidelines. Please browse through the entire guideline. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:17, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We do wish to have the article (not "profile") accurate and well-referenced to independent reliable sources, and any help you can give to achieving this is welcome. We do not necessarily want the article to reflect how you, as the publicist, would like it to appear.— Preceding unsigned comment added by ColinFine (talkcontribs)

nonexistant article about myself

[edit]

There are several references (with links in red) to my name in other wikipedia pages, but there is no page about myself that they point to. I know writing an article about myself is discouraged, but wouldn't something be better than nothing? It would be good to have an outline of how a non-narcissistic article should be created. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.6.239.72 (talk) 15:55, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please read WP:Autobiography. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:12, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, there's some more WP pages that might help: Wikipedia:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest, Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide, Wikipedia:Notable person survival kit. --Colapeninsula (talk) 16:24, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be happy to create an article for you, if you're notable. You can contact me by leaving a message at my talk page or by clicking the relevant link on the far left of that page to email me. --Dweller (talk) 16:33, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Error caused by script.

[edit]

I have been receiving this error recently. It happens incredibly often (at least one out of 3 edits). I removed User:Ais523/watchlistnotifier.js from my javascripts and I haven't seen it since so I believe that was the problem. Can anyone experienced in scripts look through that and see if they know what the problem is? I would have notified the author, but the user is no longer active. Collapsing

[edit]

How can I make this collapsed as default (autocollapsed)?

Please, help. Aditya(talkcontribs) 16:45, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I applied {{collapse top}} and {{collapse bottom}} templates to accomplish it. I'm not sure if the categorytree tag has an option for that itself. Equazcion (talk) 16:58, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please help - I thought I was in sandbox and the original content (not written by me was deleted)

[edit]

Hi, I apologize, I was trying to update our profile, and did not correctly place the links and thought I was in sandbox. The whole section was removed on the family piece, which was not written by me. Is there a way to restore the copy without the links? Sorry, I am new here. Thank you. DIMG (talk) 17:36, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like your removal was restored by someone already. You're alright :) Equazcion (talk) 17:40, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm I was looking at the wrong article. Someone else seems to have removed that stuff because it wasn't properly sourced. I'll take a closer look. Equazcion (talk) 17:42, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, it looks like either you or someone else tried to add details regarding an agreement your company made with Disney, and those details weren't found in the reference provided, so they were removed. Wikipedia has policies against adding promotional or press-release-type material to articles, and also, against creating an account for the purpose of editing for a company. You should see WP:Rename and request a username change, and refrain from promotional editing. Equazcion (talk) 17:48, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The account name "Londonberry" seems ok to me, but the signature is confusing and promotional. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:50, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch, I wasn't looking past the signature. It would be advisable to change the signature, even though I'm not sure if there's a policy (yet) prohibiting promotional signatures. Equazcion (talk) 19:17, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On facebook, the Wikipedia page is loading with the University of North Florida Seal rather than the UNF Logo. University of North Florida would like the Logo to be there instead. I am not sure how to make this happen, but the seal should be removed from the Wiki page all together if possible, and the Logo, which is on the right side of the page below the seal be used in its place. Please let me know if someone can help me make this happen!

Sorry but I think that other editors would be very resistant to making this change. The image in Facebook is being pulled from the infobox at the top of the UNF article. We've standardized on using the seal as the topmost image for nearly all college and university articles. I've argued for making the change you are requesting but I've had no success convincing my fellow editors. If you think you can change minds and develop a new consensus (or at least a consensus that we should make an exception for the UNF article), you're welcome to try! You'd want to do so by opening a discussion in the article's Talk page or maybe in the Talk page of the Universities Wikiproject (where you might get more responses and input from experienced editors). Good luck! Please let me know on my Talk page if you have any questions or need help! ElKevbo (talk) 19:57, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Languages in other script not identified

[edit]

I wish that the various languages listed on the left would show an English language translation of the name of the language. For example, I saw a link to pages in %*@$&% (for example), but even clicking on it didn't tell me what language it was. I would have liked to learn which language those characters were from. I've encountered this problem over the years, but have never written Google about it. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.199.16.168 (talk) 21:37, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User:Manishearth/sidebartranslinks.js will translate the language name and adds a Google Translate link. You need to have an account to do this. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:59, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively, look at the URL in the link (some browsers will display it in the status bar when you hover over the link), and look up the code before the 'wikipedia.org' in the table at ISO 639. --ColinFine (talk) 00:11, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
