unwanted image

How to put inline references?

Shall the ref be put after a space or without any space? Which of the following is correct?

Isn't it better to put the reference at the end of the phrase it supports, rather than after the comma that separates that phrase from the next? So I prefer

Special page named as an article

Hello, its me again. I have just found out that on clicking Special:WhatLinksHere/Wikipedia:Help_desk, we are going to a new article project page, which is a sub article of the real page. But in the url it is in Special namespace. However it looks outside as if it was in an article project namespace. The cool thing is that it has got a talkpage and it goes to the talk page of main one. The same phenomenon occurs for talk page too! Is this only for me? Shall we report it? Sorry that I was in a rush. I incorrectly named it as article page. If you click on the link on What links here from toolbox and go to that page you can see that the tab Project page is ON. (above the term Pages that link to "Wikipedia:Help desk") (If you were on your user page the tab User page would be present instead.) It virtually appears to be a sub page of the page Wikipedia:Help desk.
Since What links here is a special page, it should have been a Special page tab. Also, unlike special pages, it has a talk page. If you click on it, the talk page of Help desk will be reached. I will clarify this more elaborately, if you want.Vanischenu mTalk 04:46, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to figure out what you mean but I'm stumped. Any page that you go to where you click what links here, the tab at the top points back to the original page, in whatever namespace it is in, and the talk page is to that page's talk page. So if you go to an article and click what links here the tab at the top is to the "Article" and the talk page goes to the article's talk page. All pages in the Wikipedia namespace are described as project pages but that is just a description. They're still in the Wikipedia namespace.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:45, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this is a consequence of the fact that Special:WhatLinksHere is not its own page, but rather a certain way of viewing a page. Regardless, it is my understanding that Vanischenu is pointing out the discrepancy between the way the page tabs appear when visiting Special:WhatLinksHere vs. say Special:BrokenRedirects. It's not the only page: Special:MovePage also acts this way. The reason I would think is because WhatLinksHere and MovePage are specific to a particular page so they could set it up that way (and it makes sense that they did doesn't it?) BrokenRedirects and PrefixIndex and ProtectedTitle etc. all are non-specific to a single page. However, there is some inconsistency in that there are other special pages that are specific to a single pages that don't do so.Fuhghettaboutit (talk) --12:02, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

True but the whole scheme was not set up apparently to have perfect consistency; Wikipedia, in many respects, organically evolved with different developers all having their hands in the pie. Interestingly, while the protection interface does not manifest as a "special page", it too has the "← linked name of article" just below the article name.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:18, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki license

The software is available free under the GNU license but how you license the documents you create with the software is your choice - it doesn't affect the software license. Manuals for internal use in an organization would usually be fully copyrighted by the organization but if you want to share the manuals with other organizations you could consider one of the free licenses. GNU Free Document License might not be the most suitable for your purposes so take a look at Creative Commons license for the variety of options available under the CC system. Wikipedia preserving old aspect ratio of SVG image after update at Wiki Commons

Hello world,

I recently created and uploaded this SVG image to Wiki Commons and used it in this Wikipedia article.

After some additional editing of the SVG image - including a change of aspect ratio - I updated it at Wiki Commons, where it is being display properly. However on the preview page Wikipedia obviously still preserves the old aspect ratio and so shows the SVG image distorted: click me - actually the HTML defines the image size as width="800" height="566" while it should be 800*381.

Any idea on how to get the aspect ratio right? Is this a permanent bug or will a batchjob realize the change in aspect ratio as some point?

Biography of Steve Abana from Solomon Islands

This statement as mentioned by the Writer Mr. Casper Luiramo is misleading and does not speak well of the person. "He then entered business, exporting cocoa, after making money during the height of the Solomon Islands conflicts by acting at a middleman for compensation claimants" He was never a middle man for compensation claimants as mentioned here. Infact he was a victim himself. How do I report verbal abuse?

I was abused by a user at IP address 142.134.46.255. You can see the slander here: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:Altonbr#PTBO_Picture. I've deleted the info in my profile, but a record still exists. For privacy reasons, I'd like this user blocked and the history of my User page (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Altonbr) erased. If you want to make a separate request in case this one is missed, instructions for requesting the revision deletion can be found at WP:REVDEL#How to request Revision Deletion. As for blocking the IP, we typically only block editors for recent conduct, the personal attack on your talk page is too stale to serve as the basis for a block. Method of citing TV and radio programmes and amending citations after insertion

I have two questions to ask.

1. The citation tool only provides for websites, newspapers, books and journals. How do you cite TV and radio programmes?

Question - Ohio

Hello, I am not computer savvy, so all this edit and all stuff confuses me greatly. My understanding is that Eisenhower declared the 1st March 1803 as the date Ohio was admitted into the Union and he did this in 1953. At any rate, Eisenhower was born in 1890. Hope that cleared it up for you. Andie ▶(Candy)◀ 15:08, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Custom CSS?

Personal Reference?

My page isn't being created because I don't have enough references siting my information. I have tons of reference websites supporting my work, but I also worked with the parent of the person I'm creating the page for, so I'm wondering how do I site a personal reference? The short answer is that you can't. The information you provide has to be verifiable by other editors, so just listing the mother's name wouldn't help (though an interview with her conducted by a third party would be helpful). SAFEMODE

I cant get my computer to run except in safemode. Even when it gives you a choice of 3 different safemodes to start in & RUN WINDOWS NORMAL, I can click on run windows normal and it still boots in safemode & is very slow. Reference hovertext

I just found that hovering over a footnote inside the article text triggers the display of a Reference tooltip. When had this been enabled? Question on my article that was on speedy delete

Hello, I had created an article on shawlsmith london, it is the only company to internationally produce and distribute scarves in the city of raleigh and the entire state of north carolina. The article was speedily deleted citing A7. THe facts that I have mentioned already signify the importance of shawlsmith london to the city and state of raleigh and were not included in the article. Their designs mix british sophistication with southern charm which also does not exists in any brand in the world. Each year they recruit many new interns from the south who are able to use their platform to become better leaders. None of this aformentioned information was in the original article. What was missing was evidence that the company was notable. And indeed a Google search suggests that it is not - the first 30 hits for "shawlsmith london" included no third-party reference to it. How about #9, its from celebritycafe.com if that's not third party what is? and numerous others which fall under "the first 30 hits" which are just online retailers which carry the brand. And the second page also falling within the first 30 hits is yacoubian your statement seems a bit biased because there are many other hits that are from thrid party companies that are not shawlsmith london. How about the notable fact that it is putting a small southern city on the map with accounts in major retail stores such as Neiman Marcus, Barney's etc. How much more notable does it have to be? Please advise as I have read the policies and spent a lot of time and effort on this article to be completely dismissed. For a person to learn about the city of Raleigh is this not something of notable value to them? In fact two separate publication sources thecharlotteobserver and wakeliving had published about shawlsmithlondon but those sources where not given because the material was either not used or was in print and not online source. The notability guideline for businesses and organisations is at WP:ORG. The general notability guideline is at WP:GNG. The company must satisfy one or the other to merit an encyclopaedia article here. Celebritycafe.com appears to be a listings site. Listings are not "significant independent coverage", and nor is the fact that various websites offer the copmany's products for sale. Selling things made in a small city to big national shops does not make a company notable. What you need is articles about this company. Newspaper or magazine articles, tv coverage. Real news or features, not advertising copy or press releases, which verify the company's achievements in terms of the criteria in the notability guidelines. The company had articles written about it in a couple news affiliates that are in print and I was not able to get their information which is why I did not use them as a source. I will rewrite this article when I do. You're welcome. Do bear in mind that just finding the coverage isn't enough - the sources must be independent, reliable and credible, and the coverage must confirm the assertions you make in the article as to how the company satisfies the notability criteria. And once you've established notability, you then have to ensure the article is neutral. The sentences Orange Mike quotes belong in a publicity brochure, not an encyclopaedia article, and would certainly get the article flagged as WP:SPAM. Just an added caveat - you seem to have a good knowledge of the company, and to care about whether or not it is has an article on Wikipedia. Have you read WP:LUC? That being said, your question is not very clear, at least to me, and a quick search did not reveal what you are referring to. So I suggest that when you ask at the reference desk, you try provide some clarifying detail: what was "spin along" and where geographically was this programme offered? Many of those programs were produced by local TV stations, many weren't preserved on video tape or kinescope, and even if they were, they may have been wiped or erased as the station may have recycled or reused the recording media. NRHP articles & references

Hi, I have a question about NRHP articles and another question for references. I've done a fair amount of poking around Wikipdeia, and I've discovered the "edit", "history", and other buttons and places and policies like the "manual of style", but it seems like the manual of style is a general guideline, and doesn't have many specifics for the topic I want to write about, NRHP. How should that type of article be designed / written? My second question is how do references work and how should they be used? I clicked the edit section button for a references section on an article, and all it had was "

Regarding the references part of your question, I think your best bet is to start at Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. pronunciation button isn't working

Greetings, I've always been able use the pronunciation button to hear how a word is pronouced. But now it has stopped working? Its not a sound card problem. I'm running Win XP. Can you tell me why this isn't working anymore? And what I can do to get it back working? How to sort My Watchlist

I was wondering if Wikipedia had plans in the works to facilitate the sorting of articles on my watchlist. For example, I would like to see them sorted by "date added," "category/genre," and other possible configurations, besides the standard alphabetization. It's an interesting idea, although it might be hard to define sort schemes for things like "category/genre". Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Private persons' name stated in article without consent

I fear that my name and identity has been stated in a Wiki entry, which was deleted in 2008, yet is still visible and reference by your logs and by "wikigrains". What is the process to get this false information permanently deleted?

I don't understand. That article is completely deleted. Are you sure you are seeing the article at Wikipedia itself and not at a mirror site? Because the article is deleted, and has no publicly accessible history or versions here at Wikipedia. --Jayron32 23:36, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You might try contacting the owner of http://www.wikigrain.org (a website completely unaffiliated with Wikipedia) and over which we have no control. There is a feedback form at this link. You can also view details about the ownership and other information at this site. We have no control over WikiGrain at www.wikigrain.org. It is an independent website not run by the Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia. I see they have a feedback page. You could try using that but I don't know how they treat requests for removal. As http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Michelle_Veilleux shows, the page was deleted from Wikipedia. The url http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Michelle_Veilleux gives a HTTP 404 Not Found error message to visitors and should not be indexed by any search engines. It's not required but you might first sign up for an account which has some benefits over editing by your IP address (it takes but a few seconds and is anonymous) and go through the Wikipedia:Tutorial to learn some basics of editing. When you click on one of the articles in these categories, you'll be taken to the English Wikipedia article and you should see at the top a notice about translation with a link to the Spanish or French language Wikipedia article that has the text that the English version could benefit from.
