[edit]Band notability
[edit]I was in the process of creating a page for The M Machine, and the page was deleted (A7: Article about a band, singer, musician, or musical ensemble, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject). I want to know how to improve the article to prevent its deletion next time. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dustinslush (talk • contribs) 01:53, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- Provide 3rd party reliable sources indicating why the band is notable, for one of the reasons listed at WP:NBAND CTJF83 02:00, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Hello
[edit]I am contacting you today because I want an article written on Wikipedia about www.theangrygrandpashow.net
He is a famous comedian/actor on youtube and runs his own site and clothing line. Please contact me back in regards to this because it will mean so much to me, the Angry Grandpa and his fans!

- See WP:AFC to create one yourself or Wikipedia:Requested articles to request someone create the article. CTJF83 02:01, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- But for an article to be created and survive, somebody will need to show that he is notable, i.e. that several reliable sources, independent of him, have written about him. I suggest you start by finding these sources. --ColinFine (talk) 23:51, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Name of Macedonia
[edit]Dear Sir/Madam,
I have lately noticed that wikipedia has included in its database the name of FYROM as "Macedonia". Unofortunately, this is huge mistake. From ancient history, it has been repeated that Macedonia is a Greek tribe which is located in the Greek area. The people so called "Fyromians" are Slavians and they have no connection with this history indicated in the article. Not even their language has nothing to do with Macedonian! FYROM is their temporary name until they solve this dispute with Greece. Greek people support that their real name is Skopje or Vardaska as it was previously mentioned globally in WWII. Please, make the appropriate corrections for the name.
Regards,
a fan reader — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.68.12.154 (talk) 12:26, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- I think that you have misread whichever page you are looking at. Macedonia is a disambiguation page with links to many other pages; one of those is Macedonia (terminology) which explains the situation. So does the article on Republic of Macedonia, which is a redirect from FYRM and from FYROM. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:42, 2 November 2011
The name ofthe country is Republic of Macedonia. the Greeks should get over it. They are a great people; so arethe Maceddonians. This is 2011,not 1912!!
- This is not the page for a discussion on such a topic, but you will find that what the country is known as in international circles is what Wikipedia will call it, not what the Greeks think it should be called. The Mark of the Beast (talk) 01:26, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Please bring back the option to DELETE the table of contents. Just a personal preference. LOVE WIKIPEDIA! Keep up the good work. Thank you! C — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.170.28.116 (talk) 20:53, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- You can, just put __NOTOC__ on the page. CTJF83 20:58, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- But you should have very good reasons for doing so on article pages -- a ToC should always be preferred. Unless the OP is referrimng to the show and hide links, which are working for me. – ukexpat (talk) 21:02, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- If you mean you don’t want to show you a table of contents on any page, go to My preverences > Appearance > Advanced options, and uncheck “Show table of contents (for pages with more than 3 headings)” (But you need to be logged in for that.) —teb728 t c 21:10, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks teb728, I was unaware of that option. CTJF83 21:18, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

- Your request could refer to three different features and none of them have been removed by Wikipedia. If you mean the show/hide link has disappeared for you in the table of contents then the feature requires that JavaScript is enabled in your browser. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:48, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Hattusa
[edit]Hattusa only renders to PDF to 75% and then it stops. Why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.52.212.244 (talk) 22:24, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- That's strange. It's actually the same for me, renders to 75% and then stops. I tried some other articles and they render fine. Tested in Safari and Internet Explorer 8 and the problem occurs in both browsers. I have no idea why that is. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 00:06, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- The problem seems to be caused by the template {{hide in print|{{unicode|𒌷𒄩𒀜𒌅𒊭}}}} in the page markup. I pasted that template to User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Sandbox and that page does not render as PDF either. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 00:19, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- It renders now that I wrapped that unicode in {{hide in print}}. —teb728 t c 00:52, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Request to mainspace article
[edit]Hello - I recently finished the article at User:SierraSciSPA/William H. Andrews (biologist). Full disclosure: Dr. Andrews is my boss, so I have an obvious conflict of interest. However, I believe he's clearly a notable figure, I think the article is well-cited, and I don't think it reads like an advertisement.
So, to head off any problems, I was hoping another editor (an admin if possible) could read it over, make sure it's okay, and mainspace it for me?
Thanks so much! SierraSciSPA (talk) 23:25, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- You claim to be the copyright holder of this image, are you, personally, the copyright holder of that image, or just representing someone who does? Яehevkor ✉ 23:37, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- The company Sierra Sciences holds the copyright on that image; I'm an employee of the company who is authorized to release the image under a Creative Commons license. SierraSciSPA (talk) 23:45, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- According to the metadata of the image, the copyright is held by "Jeff Ross Photography". —teb728 t c 23:53, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- That's the company we hired to take the photograph. The contract transferred the copyright to us: the entire point of taking publicity photographs was so that we could use them in any way we saw fit. SierraSciSPA (talk) 00:10, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

- My concern is that you are not editing as an individual - I don't see how you, as an individual, would be the copyright holder as the upload suggests. Your account seems to be editing as a role account, which is not permitted. Even your name seems to suggest this "Sierra Science single purpose account". Яehevkor ✉ 00:19, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- No one has access to the account other than me personally. Yes, this is a single-purpose account, but it is not and has never been a generic corporate account. I didn't mean to suggest that I, as an individual, hold the copyright to this image. I wrote on the upload form "Sierra Sciences has released this image under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license" because I am an employee authorized to release Sierra Sciences' images under Creative Commons licenses. I never meant to imply that I personally hold the copyright to this image. SierraSciSPA (talk) 00:25, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

- Well might be best to request a username change per WP:CORPNAME, if possible. Either way, I'm not too up on image copyright ins and outs, but it might be worth logging something via WP:OTRS, i.e. sending an email from a Sierra Sciences email to confirm the licensing of the image (to permissions-en@wikimedia.org) which I'd hope would clear up any issues there - I'm not sure if the meta data would be an issue though. I'll try and have a look at the article, but the problem with COI submissions is while it does appear well sourced and neutrally worded, it can be hard to tell if negative information has been omitted. Яehevkor ✉ 00:57, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think I left anything out - Dr. Andrews isn't a particularly controversial figure. But I invite you to check the web; that's kind of the point of taking the article here in the first place. SierraSciSPA (talk) 01:27, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Rehevkor is correct - the permission must be communicated properly as set out at WP:IOWN - we cannot take your word for it that appropriate permission has been granted. I also second the suggestion that you request a name change. IMHO SierraSciSPA is a clear violation of WP:CORPNAME. – ukexpat (talk) 15:32, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- I've sent an e-mail to the photographer we hired asking him to send a letter verifying his permission to release the image. As for my account name, any admin reading this can feel free change it to anything you want; I'm hard-pressed to see what possible effect this issue has on anything. I thought I'd be up-front and transparent about my COI, but apparently site policy discourages that. So, getting back to my original question - is the article acceptable for mainspace? SierraSciSPA (talk) 16:18, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
One more question - given that the image has been tagged for deletion, how long does the photographer have to respond? It's going to be unfortunate if he waits six hours to check his e-mail and then all there is for him to see is a dead link. SierraSciSPA (talk) 16:21, 3 November 2011 (UTC) Never mind, the template makes that clear. SierraSciSPA (talk) 16:23, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- Admins cannot change usernames, only bureaucrats can do that and you need to make a request for them to do so. – ukexpat (talk) 17:58, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- So now that I've had our photographer send an e-mail Wikipedia, and I've put in a username change request, can I get an answer to my original question: can someone clear this article for mainspacing, or, alternatively, would it be a problem for anyone if I did it? SierraSciSPA (talk) 20:36, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- Admins cannot change usernames, only bureaucrats can do that and you need to make a request for them to do so. – ukexpat (talk) 17:58, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
I've given the article a once over and it does appear neutral and relatively well sourced - and sourcing gaps aside there are a few good independent sources to establish notability, personally I'd like to see more but I have seen articles survive on a lot less. I couldn't find any gaps in the article but I admit it's not a field I am familiar with - of course being comprehensive is not a requirement for mainspace, but omissions could create neutrality issues as I mentioned above. I'd not be opposed seeing this in mainspace, but then that is just my opinion. Яehevkor ✉ 20:54, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
