User created a page for a file that is on Commons

[edit]

Is that what happened here? I'm guessing that this should be deleted since the file is on Commons but I've never seen this before. Were they maybe trying to upload their own image and didn't understand what they were doing? Dismas|(talk) 00:13, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It has been deleted. Three minutes earlier the user added the same url for an external image to the article [1] where the Commons image is used, so it was apparently an attempt to display the external image in the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:33, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Producer forgotten on "Bangin' On Wax" album page

[edit]

Hi Help Desk, My name is Jay Shanklin AKA" J-Stank." I am one of the producers on the record and my name is not listed. The other info I saw was pretty acurate. I am making it a point because, I was heavily involved in this project and the credits on the record include my name on several songs as Producer. "Piru Love" is most noteable.FYI there are no samples only "inspired by" creations on each title. I know because I was a featured musician on the majority of the record. Thanks Wikipedia for documenting this title, let's just document it right!

"In 2004, Tribe admitted to plagiarism after reports surfaced that material published by Tribe in 1985 was closely similar to material originally published by Henry J. Abraham in 1974. Some sentences were identical.[11][12] The revelation..."

when I search for lawrence tribe, the top version comes up. Then when I look at article history and click onwhatis supposedly the latest(my) version, the lower paragraph is in there. What's up? Rich peterson24.7.28.186 (talk) 02:05, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The IP user 199.33.32.40 immediately added a sentence after your edits. Hence the difference. See his changes.-- Obsidin Soul 02:32, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Abegnale and Colton Harris Moore both have articles because they are both covered in reliable independent sources - Wikipedia makes no value judgements about individuals whether they are convicted criminals or saints - we just need reliable sourcing which verifies the information. As to the black entrepreneur, without knowing who you are talking about, I can't give a definitive answer, but I would hazard a guess that his article is being considered for deletion (or has already been deleted) because he did not have a specific claim of significance and/or he did not meet the notability criteria. If you would like to tell us which person you are talking about, we could give more specific advice -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 06:07, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

{{NUMBEROFEDITS}}

[edit]

Is {{NUMBEROFEDITS}} covers only edits to pages in main namespace or all namespaces? Marthelati (talk) 09:17, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to mw:Help:Magic words, it covers all "page edits", not "article edits", so I'm guessing the latter. But then again, 1,256,473,582 (number of edits) / 61,964,525 (number of pages) = ~ 19 edits / page, which is kind of low. Maybe someone else can look through the code and come up with a definite answer. Regards SoWhy 09:37, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Seems about right to me. Sure there's numerous pages with many more than 19 edits but there's also about five million redirects (or ±20% of all pages) and I imagine the average number of edits to redirects is just over one.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:07, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

THE SCENARIO OF THE DEPOSIT COLLECTORS IN INDIAN BANKS.

[edit]
Extended content
THE SCENARIO OF THE DEPOSIT COLLECTORS IN INDIAN BANKS

This scheme was introduced in INDIA in 1915 in SYNDICATE BANK BY PAYING Rs.3.5% commission on collections to the collection agents. The collections agent should be retired employee from the government service. But the banks recruited youngsters for promotion scheme besides for bank business promotion. Later the same scheme was introduced in the various banks of the industry. In the year of 1980 due to a dispute between the banks and the deposit collectors the same matter was referred to the INDUSTRIAL TRIBUNAL, Hyderabad. The deposit collectors was represented for workman status with Rs.750/- wage per month as per the scales prevailing on that date in BHEL: HYDERABAD in Andhra Pradesh and 15 days of salary per year as gratuity (to be calculated on the commission earned at the time of retirement in that year) (Important portion of the Award Enclosed). In the early years i.e. at the age of 20/30 years earning is higher and at the old age due to health the same collections are not done by the said deposit collectors hence the gratuity comes very less amount. The Bank Clerks are drawing Rs.450/- (approximately) salary per month (1980). The Tribunal declared an award declaring the deposit collectors as workmen under Industrial Dispute Act. With Rs.750/- salary per month (Minimum collection of Rs.7,500/-) + 2% commission on and above of Rs.7500/- plus conveyance allowance. AT the time of declaration of award the banks are paying at a flat rate of 3% to 3.5% commission on the collections made by the deposit collectors.

               Collection
                  amount COMMISSION
                                                 (in Rs.)

Before the Tribunal Award @ 3% After the Tribunal award

 First 1 lac 3,000 2,700
  Above the 1 lac 3% not changed i.e. 3,000 2,000

With the judgment of the award the collectors are getting a loss of Rs.300/- for first 1 lac. collection and loosing Rs.1,000/- for every 1 lac. Collections after the 1st 1 lac collections. AT the same time the Regular employees are getting their salaries for every four years by wage settlement in the Banking Industry. As on date the Bank Clerk’s salary is minimum nearly Rs.10,000/-. The All India Banking Employees Union extended their affiliation to the deposit collectors for the welfare of the deposit collectors after the Tribunal award in 1988. From 1988 the said union has not done any favor to the deposit collectors. In the Banking Industry where a person has worked for a minimum of 180 days or more, they are offered as sweepers and sub staff. As we are working for the last 31 years (taking the year of case referred to the Tribunal) no one has given the chances for the regular employment into the Banking Industry from the deposit collectors, these things are made by & with the help of the said union/unions. The said union has not done any favor to us for absorption of regular employees as we are covered under Industrial Dispute act. But some banks at their own discretion with out the involvement of the said union {Private & Public sector (State Bank of Travancore)} has taken the deposit collectors as sub-staff and clerk cum cashiers as per their qualifications. The Tribunal award was challenged at High Court of Andhra Pradesh and Supreme Court of India by the Indian Bankers Association. The workmen status was given to the deposit collectors by the both Higher Judiciaries. But the same was now in the CGIT, New Delhi and on process of cross examination stage and waiting for the judgment by the CGIT. STATE BANK OF HYDERABAD has not implemented the said judgement (after the decision of the Supreme Court of India all the banks has implemented) until this date and harassing the deposit collectors for closure of scheme in the said bank. In this Bank in the month of January/Febraury 2005 the deposit collector of BHADRACHALAM (Andhra Pradesh) branch has attempted suicide in the branch premises before all the staff members and the same was informed to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and the branch manager was served a notice to attend before the court. The bank union members has made pressure on the deposit collector to with draw the case from the court. The said same conditions are now in this bank. The said bank is not issuing the any circular not to open the new a/c.s and simply asking the agents to do so to close the scheme and step out all the agents from the bank themselves. In SYNDICATE BANK in the year of 2010 at UTUKURU (Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh) the deposit collector had attempted suicide and found dead by keeping two letter in the pocket of the Agent explaining the matter of harassment by the branch manager of Utukuru Branch, Syndicate Bank. (The press clipping enclosed herewith) In VIJAYA BANK the depositors are offered 2% rate of interest for the deposits made by the depositors for this scheme. If the depositor want to avail the deposit loan on the daily deposit the loan interest 12.5% will be charged to the depositor for his loan amount. Similarly for general deposits 2% extra will be charged on the prevailing deposit interest rate. This is also one way of the banking industry to send out all the deposit collectors without saying anything. Considering the facts I request your kind enough to consider raising inflation year by year since 1980, as the wage Rs.750/- is fixed in the year of 1988 by the tribunal award accoriding the to the index of 1980. Now the banking industry in need of human resource if we are given a chance for absorption of regular employees some of the families will enjoy the fruits of Industrial Tribunal.

Feature at WP:UTN not working

[edit]

At WP:UTN#Multi-level templates it says beneath the contents box "Hover over the template syntax to see a summary of the contents." At least for me, this does not work. Do I need to have some additional software installed for this or do something else in order to see it? If this is the case, then shouldn't that fact be mentioned there? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 12:21, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. The hover over text for {{tltts}} (and for {{tltts3}} does not seem to be working anywhere. I know that they worked at at one time because I created tltts3 just for use at WP:UTN, have added templates there multiple times, and I remember checking the hover over text I'd written for accuracy.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:36, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It works for me when I hover over "{{" or "}}", but not over "subst:" or the template name. I guess this is what was meant by "Hover over the template syntax", but it sounds unclear. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:50, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Tltt#Known problems says: "On some systems, the text only displays when user hovers over the curly braces, not over the link itself." PrimeHunter (talk) 12:53, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Hovering over "{{" or "}}" it works for me too. I simply interpreted "template syntax" as meaning the whole expression with the curly brackets, such as {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}, so I was tempted to place my cursor on the word and not the surroinding brackets. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 12:57, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, I was using a different browser last I checked these templates.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:22, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have investigated further. In all 4 tested browsers (IE, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera), if I'm logged out, or logged in without Navigation popups enabled at Special:Preferences#preftab-9, then I only see the text when hovering over the curly brackets. If I enable Navigation popups then I also see the text (in addition to the popup) when I hover over the linked template name. A 2007 edit [2] changed the text from "Tip: Hover over the curly braces to see a description of the template." to "Hover over the template syntax to see a summary of the contents." Unless I'm missing something, I think it should be changed to say "curly braces" again. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:53, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, it should be changed back. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:56, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed it to "Hover over the curly braces to see a summary of the contents.".[3] PrimeHunter (talk) 16:14, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Display of Wikipedia on my laptop

[edit]

Hi Not sure what happened recently, but all of a sudden the display of Wikipedia on my laptop appears like 'plain text' - can anyone help please? I would like to know what setting I can change to reflect it in a better view (rich text). Thanks! Renier

You don't mention what browser you use or, though it's a less likely culprit, what operating system. Things you could try though is seeing if you've changed some setting in your browser's preferences, in Firefox hit Ctrl and the zero key to bring the text size back to normal, or clear your cache. Correcting instructions

[edit]

Instructions are given about how to correct articles, but not about correcting Wiki 'instructions'. For example, we sometimes see the message "This article may require cleanup... (Consider using more specific clean up..." This should be "cleanup", but I don't know how to indicate this error. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dpkipling (talkcontribs) .

The message comes from a template. If you click "edit this page" then you will see code like {{Cleanup}} where the text is displayed, and a link like Template:Cleanup near the bottom of the window. You can suggest a change to the message at Template talk:Cleanup. English is my second language and I'm not sure whether "cleanup" or "clean up" is best in this case. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:10, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
English is a second language for me too, but according to Wiktionary, cleanup is a noun, while clean up is a verb. In the phrase "Consider using more specific clean up instructions", cleanup seems to be a Gerund, so I think you are correct. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:44, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mmh, it is not a gerund, as it does not end with -ing. I am not sure what this form is actually called. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 16:05, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Infinitive. (Or, infinitive + adverb, if you like, forming an 'infinitive phrase'. But, really, just "infinitive")  Chzz  ►  18:21, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Best Article of All?

[edit]

What article is Good or Featured in the most languages? Interchangeable|talk to me|what I've changed 16:14, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2010 August 19#Wikipedia article Featured in most Languages. There's also Wikipedia:Wikipedia records#Languages, though if I remember correctly, that record was updated as a result of the prior help desk discussion (after it moved to my talk page). The long and short of it is that for featured articles, it appears to be Julius Caesar with 13 FA stars (it's also a good article at five other language Wikipedias). Note that it used to be featured here but was delisted in 2005. For the article with the most, that is featured on the English Wikipedia, it appears to be Moon with 11 FA stars total.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:42, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

University of Liverpool - Incorrect Crest

[edit]

I hope somebody is able to help me....

Recently, the new University of Liverpool logo was replaced with the old university crest just because the user preferred that crest to the new one (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/University_of_Liverpool)

This does not truly reflect the university as the old crest is no longer used at all - not on the website, degree certificate etc. I am a graduate of the university and therefore I'm aware of the old crest being entirely replaced.

The page was fine before a user replaced the new logo with the old crest.

Is somebody able to remove the old crest and move the new logo back up to the top which is a much more recognisable and clearer representation of the university?

Please visit www.liverpool.ac.uk for clarification.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

You should discuss this at Talk:University of Liverpool to build a consensus for your proposed change. —teb728 t c 21:35, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have placed a message on Talk:University of Liverpool but nobody seems to be able to replace the logo despite the strong arguments being put forward. Think this page is rarely used. Can someone help?

add photos to Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi There,

I have an extensive collection of very old postcards (1900-1940) I often research Wikipedia for information especially for postcards of people. Quiet often I go to the page and see no picture posted there of the subject and I have one which I would more than gladly upload to the page if I knew how to?? I know I need certain privaliges but I think I could help out with some of the pictures I have. For instance, I just looked for THE MAHARAJAH OF BIKANIR. Although he wasn't directly in Wikipedia the region of Bikanir was. I have a great picture of THE MAHARAJAH OF BIKANIR taken in 1910 which I would like to give to Wikipedia(upload?) I am sure I could enhance your site on many occasions.

best wishes

Tony ShephardAntjamshep (talk) 21:31, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe, from my reading of Commons:Commons:Licencing#India, that would be classed as a "public domain" image - hence, yes, we could use it.
You can upload it quite easily, over at the Commons upload form, and in the 'permission' box put {{PD-India}} - exactly like that, within double-squiggly-brackets.
Fill everything else in as best you can. If you have trouble, ask again here. Thanks!  Chzz  ►  22:35, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
