[edit]Single login at Meta - double login everywhere else
[edit]I have a unified account on the various WMF projects. If I go to meta:Special:UserLogin and log in, I can jump to any other WMF project like Commons, Wiktionary or Wikipedia and I will automatically be loged in.
If I log in at any other project, like commons:Special:UserLogin, wiktionary:Special:UserLogin or wikipedia:Special:UserLogin and then jump to another WMF project, I have to log in a second time. After the second login, I am automatically logged in to all other projects.

Problem with template

- I removed the Category:Airports in Syria category. Similar templates do not appear to have the corresponding "Airports" category - see {{Airports in Russia}} for example. – ukexpat (talk) 01:15, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

I can't see the images on the page.
[edit]Hi, I'm a mainland Chinese user of WIKI, I can't see the images(.jpg & .png etc.) on English pages or any other language page's, except Chinese version, there has a certain gadget that help to display the images which are blocked by ISP, so Chinese pages worked well, but it doesn't work on any other languages', so please help me find a solution for that, thank you very much!! - I am also a mainland Chinese user, but there are no problems of loading images. If the content is blocked by GFW, the whole page will not load instead of just images. Maybe you should try some tunneling software and if that does not work, it must the problem of your own computer.--Netheril96 (talk) 10:51, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi,Netheril96, thank you for your reply, can we talk in Chinese version, I just recently switched to Firefox and installed Tunnelier, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube all get well, but only Wiki is exceptional, the same situation as IE I used before, only text, no images, Chinese pages now get along, but others, quite frustrating, hopefully I could find something work it out, thank you.HolaG (talk) 17:58, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- In Firefox it's easy to accidentally block images on a site by right clicking an image and then clicking the wrong option. With Firefox you may need (possibly some details depend on the version): Tools - Options - Content - Load images automatically - Click the "exceptions" button and delete http://upload.wikimedia.org from the list - Highlight - "Remove site" button. See also Wikipedia:Troubleshooting#Firefox doesn't display images for another possibility. If this doesn' work then can you see http://wiki.riteme.site/images/wikimedia-button.png which is one of the few images at wiki.riteme.site? PrimeHunter (talk) 14:20, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, PrimeHunter. I clicked the "excptions" button, but the window that came out are empty, there's nothing to delete or remove. The version that I used is "3.6.10" of Firefox. And for the second method, there doesn't have "for the originating web site only" checkbox, and I added "http://commons.wikipedia.org", "http://wiki.riteme.site" and "http://upload.wikipedia.org" to the allow list, it's still not working. In case of today's homepage, the big WIKI logo at upper left corner is invisible, the two small "mediawiki" logo at lower right corner are visible, all the logo of wiki's sister projects are invisible. What the matter is all pictures from articles are invisible, which is the .jpg files. Is there a possibility that those images are being blocked by the government?HolaG (talk) 16:54, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- For Netheril96, you know that certain option from My preferences in Chinese page is called the "display the images that bloked by ISP", which you couldn't find from English version, I checked that box, the images immediately showed up!! That's amazing, but why the other language's can't. I raised question in Chinese help desk too, I guess it's censorship. what network are you using? HolaG (talk) 17:57, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- It's http://commons.wikimedia.org and http://upload.wikimedia.org with 'm' in wikimedia (the Wikimedia Foundation runs Wikipedia). All images displayed in the editable parts of Wikipedia pages are stored at http://upload.wikimedia.org which is apparently the site you cannot access. http://wiki.riteme.site/images/wikimedia-button.png displayed in the corner is one of the few images stored at wiki.riteme.site where you are able to access images. The "Powered by MediaWiki" image is at http://bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/poweredby_mediawiki_88x31.png which you can apparently also access. The Wikipedia logo in the corner is stored at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d6/Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.png. - Yes I mean that. I see the logo there so I guess you can see no images originating from http://upload.wikimedia.org. I don't know how the Chinese gadget works. Maybe it loads images from another domain. If you right click the Wikipedia logo displayed in the right side of the article zh:英語維基百科 then can your browser show where the images is coming from with and without the gadget enabled? For me it's coming from http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d6/Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.png. I also get an image from there and a link to there by left clicking the image to get to the file page zh:File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.png. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:53, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Page numbers in different editions of books
[edit]Can I be sure that, when citing a book that I have to hand, but which a previous editor has used in a different edition or impression with a different ISBN (perhaps with a different publisher on a different contintent) the page numbers that the two of us use will not produce a nonsense for someone checking the citations? --TedColes (talk) 09:13, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- No, you can't. Different editions of the same book are sometimes paginated quite differently. However, if there's a smattering of pages cited for specific facts in the past edition cited, and all of them line up with the pages in your edition, that's a good indication that the two editions are paginated the same. If you don't have this assurance, then you can cite the book separately a second time providing its edition and isbn.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 10:16, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Registering Company

I work for a Recruitment Company and we were just wondering whether it would be posible to put our comany on Wikipedia. This could be used as a reference for our clients and candidates.
Could you let me know if this is possible.

- The short answer is no, unless your company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines for companies (very few do). Please also read these FAQ for businesses and this page about using Wikipedia for advertising. You may find that WikiCompany suits your needs better. – ukexpat (talk) 14:40, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Since companies are not alowed to put theire info in wikipedia, why can companies like P&P Projects http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/P%26P_Projects do this without being deleted? - It is not a question of being "allowed" to have an article. Any one, thing, company etc can have an article provided that the subject is notable - notability is Wikipedia's primary inclusion criterion. For companies it is further explained in the guidelines at WP:CORP. Notability has to be established by reference to significant coverage in reliable sources. – ukexpat (talk) 15:25, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

- Lets get our verbs right here. Companies do not have an article at Wikipedia. See WP:OWN. No article is "maintained" by a company like they would maintain a Myspace page or a website. There are articles about companies, just like there are articles about people, insects, chemical compounds, wars, historical events, sports teams, works of literature, etc. etc. Articles about companies are held to the exact same standards as articles about, say, an insect or a work of literature, or anything else really. --Jayron32 20:21, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

- Another editor has split it into two columns, including the heading. Did you want to keep one heading for two columns? Then you can insert
colspan=2

Include my email address when other people are notified of changes I make
[edit]One of the options in the preferences is "Include my email address when other people are notified of changes I make." What does this mean? Searching the archives of the Help Desk turns up a similar question that was answered in part with the statement, "I don't think the quoted option has any effect here currently". Is this still true? Does this preference option really do nothing? Does Wikipedia ever give out my email address to anyone (administrators, checkusers, etc) under any other circumstances? - As far as I recall that functionality (notification of changes) is currently disabled on En Wikipedia. Wikipedia does not disclose e-mail addresses to anyone. At the moment the e-mail address is used in the password reset function and to allow other users to contact you via the Special:EmailUser link. – ukexpat (talk) 19:13, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- It was me who replied with your quote at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2009 August 27#Include my email address when other people are notified of changes I make. I still think the quote holds. Note however that if email notifications of changes are enabled at the English Wikipedia in the future then the option will get an effect, so don't select it if you want to protect your email address. meta:Privacy policy#Discussions says: "The email address put into one's user preferences may be used by the Foundation for communication." Administrators cannot access it. I don't know who else can but I guess checkusers cannot. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:30, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- You should note that when you use the EmailUser function, it sends your email to the person you are emailing, so it's not 100% true that Wikipedia does not disclose email addresses to anyone.Elen of the Roads (talk) 22:27, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
improper deletion of my uploaded images
[edit]Acather96 has just deleted all my recently uploaded images, on the grounds that I have not provided rationale for fair use. In fact, these are not used under the fair use clause. I have stipulated that they are non-free, used with permission of the copyright holder, which in most cases is, in fact, ME. Perhaps I need an additional tag. - Hi E. S. V. Leigh. Explicit permission for use here, without the picture being freely licensed so our end users can also use it at will, leaves unchanged our ability or inability to use the copyrighted image. In other words, we are simply left with a copyrighted image we can't use, as if such permission had never been given. This is because our licenses require that Wikipedia content be freely reusable in various ways, including for commercial purposes. We can, however, use certain copyrighted images under a claim of fair use. You were tagging these with {{Non-free with permission}}. That tag is only used in addition to a claim of free use. As far as I can tell, this is a rarely used, "comfort tag", showing that the copyright holder themselves approves of the fair use, but it does not change the underlying issue. The tag itself says in its body "This tag must be used in conjunction with another fair-use image tag. If no other tag is present on this page, and this image was uploaded after May 19, 2005, please speedily delete this image..."--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:39, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Ask to remove personal details from image history

- The image is at the Wikimedia Commons, and is only shown here. The vast majority of Wikipedia administrators are not also Commons administrators so this request is unlikely to reach anyone who can delete anything from the image's page history.
