A single pair of coordinates is no good. You need to give two pairs, being two diagonally opposite corners of a rectangle; the format is [ [lat1, lon1], [lat2, lon2] ] (see MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js). Do not make the rectangle too small, in case geolocation is inaccurate in the desired target area. I don't know about Ireland, but UK geolocation is notoriously inaccurate, see User:Redrose64#Where am I?. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:03, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Redrose64 I want to include the whole country because too many people could be from any area but be able to come to Cork for the day. Those corners 55°30′N 10°00′W / 55.5°N 10°W / 55.5; -10 and 50°00′N 5°18′W / 50°N 5.3°W / 50; -5.3 enclose most of the island of Ireland plus western Cornwall (and bits of Scotland, but that doesn't matter), although parts of County Kerry are cut off, so I would advise moving the western edge out a bit; we can also bring the southern edge in, to avoid hitting Cornwall. Amorymeltzer I'm not sure I understand. It's a wikipedia meet up with a focus on genre related articles due to a worldcon in Ireland next year. We're trying to increase wikipedia editor interest in the con world and get people to edit based on their interest in genre. There is a link to the worldcon to let wikipedia people know what worldcon is. There is also a link with the Irish Science Fiction and Fantasy convention but that's in October. Since I was pinged, I'll say that yes, it did (and I image for RR as well), but my understanding is that IE encompasses Ireland the country, not Ireland the island. Fair point Amorymeltzer, - from my perspective there is no reason not to include the whole island since the only limit to attendance is the ability to get to the location and it is as improbable someone will come from Donegal as Belfast. Hence I figured to include the whole island rather than exclude any group. So if IE only encompasses the state then it wouldn't work for inclusiveness and is a good and valid reason not to use it and to continue to ask for coords. I take it the country code is indeed by state? I hope to do all this again soon (a couple of months) so I'll copy the details from here.     • I object generally (I think advertising the discussion on the watchlist has a similar impact amongst signed-in users to what the banner itself would be), but I agree with Courcelles that if there is to be a notice, it needs to be to Wikipedians in all geographic regions. The discussion has had a high number of participants so I figured that this would be of interest to editors, especially U.S. editors given the topic. The notice clearly says it's about discussing a proposal, I don't see how that has the same effect as the proposed central notice.       • SuperHamster, my concern is that it effectively advertises the banner to all logged-in users in the US, which also in a way aids in the advocacy. That was my largest concern, and why I think it would be inappropriate, so would still object to a global watchlist message. I’m sorry if I rushed here on the intent, but I do think advertising it in the most visible method for logged-in users somewhat defeats the point of discussing it. @Checkingfax and Ben Creasy: Apologies, I'm still new to this. I think I used the wrong sort of quotes in the javascript and was trying to use wikitext in the notice, of which it seems only a subset is supported. I've fixed the quoting issue and now when I hack my geolocation to be 36, -120, I see the notice on my watchlist. I've also replaced the wikitext bolding with the HTML version but there's a cache somewhere that needs purging for this to take effect and I'm not sure which one - this should flow through in the next little while. @Checkingfax, Ben Creasy, and GoldenRing: yeah, the ''' will upset it. You can force this with \'\'\', I think, to escape the characters. But generally speaking formatting is best avoided!

To purge an arbitrary wikipage, you can add &action=purge to the end - I tend to do this after altering any geonotices. Not sure if it actually makes a difference or not but it can't hurt. Andrew Gray (talk) 16:42, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

GoldenRing. Hey, no problem. The Watchlist Geonotice is not a dealbreaker to attract attendees. BTW, do you or Andrew Gray know how to make an SF Bay Area geotargeted Central Notice? @Checkingfax: short answer "no", long answer "...but if it's possible, it will probably use much the same code as the geonotice does" (since those can switch from country to geography).
