- A single pair of coordinates is no good. You need to give two pairs, being two diagonally opposite corners of a rectangle; the format is
[ [lat1, lon1], [lat2, lon2] ]
(see MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js). Do not make the rectangle too small, in case geolocation is inaccurate in the desired target area. I don't know about Ireland, but UK geolocation is notoriously inaccurate, see User:Redrose64#Where am I?. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:03, 7 September 2018 (UTC)- Redrose64 I want to include the whole country because too many people could be from any area but be able to come to Cork for the day. I'm not sure how to use any of the gadgets though or pick such areas- does [ [55.5, -10],[50, -5.3] ] work? ☕ Antiqueight chatter 21:26, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

- Those corners 55°30′N 10°00′W / 55.5°N 10°W and 50°00′N 5°18′W / 50°N 5.3°W enclose most of the island of Ireland plus western Cornwall (and bits of Scotland, but that doesn't matter), although parts of County Kerry are cut off, so I would advise moving the western edge out a bit; we can also bring the southern edge in, to avoid hitting Cornwall. - Amorymeltzer I'm not sure I understand. It's a wikipedia meet up with a focus on genre related articles due to a worldcon in Ireland next year. We're trying to increase wikipedia editor interest in the con world and get people to edit based on their interest in genre. There is a link to the worldcon to let wikipedia people know what worldcon is. There is also a link with the Irish Science Fiction and Fantasy convention but that's in October. - @Amorymeltzer and Antiqueight: There's the option of specifying a country code rather than coordinates. See documentation further up this page. Deryck C. 15:09, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Deryck Chan: Can you say what I should have said then because I thought that stating I wanted Ireland was doing that but then needed the coords too. As I wasn't sure of any of it (first time nerves) I didn't know which/what/how etc... (ps, no l in my name) ☕ Antiqueight chatter 15:23, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- It wasn't your fault - I guess it simply didn't occur to Amorymeltzer at the time that specifying all of Ireland as a country code was an option...! Deryck C. 15:45, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- Since I was pinged, I'll say that yes, it did (and I image for RR as well), but my understanding is that IE encompasses Ireland the country, not Ireland the island. The Island appeared to be what was asked for, both in the initial link and with the first pair of coordinates offered. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 16:03, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- Fair point Amorymeltzer, - from my perspective there is no reason not to include the whole island since the only limit to attendance is the ability to get to the location and it is as improbable someone will come from Donegal as Belfast. Hence I figured to include the whole island rather than exclude any group. So if IE only encompasses the state then it wouldn't work for inclusiveness and is a good and valid reason not to use it and to continue to ask for coords. I take it the country code is indeed by state? I hope to do all this again soon (a couple of months) so I'll copy the details from here. And I thank you for your help. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 17:36, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- It wasn't your fault - I guess it simply didn't occur to Amorymeltzer at the time that specifying all of Ireland as a country code was an option...! Deryck C. 15:45, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

Discussion Unfortunately, the Wikipedia community is still very small here in Lebanon. I'm requesting this on the English wiki because most users view it instead of the Arabic wiki, because the Arabic wiki is so sad and lacking in content. We're working on changing that. Majdal.cc (talk) 12:38, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- Majdal.cc: Is there an event page for this editing event, either on the English Wikipedia or another Wikimedia project? It's usually useful to link to a page. Deryck C. 12:42, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- Deryck: edited to include a link to the subpage (Wikipedia:Meetup/Beirut)! We'll be expanding the subpage in the next couple of days. Majdal.cc (talk) 12:58, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- Majdal.cc: Great. I suggest this text: "Let's add the new Members of Parliament of Lebanon to Wikipedia! Join us for editathons at Masaha at the SMEX office in Badaro, Beirut on Saturday 15 September and 22 September." Also would you prefer this geonotice to target all Lebanon rather than specific coordinates? --Deryck C. 13:36, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, Deryck. The reformulated text is much better. We could target Beirut only, but Lebanon is a small country, and that would exclude many of the contributors who we want to reach out to in our effort to decentralize the power of the capital city. Some of the most active editors on the Lebanese parliament page are actually in Tripoli, not Beirut (see ar:خاص:مساهمات/Omar_chamsin, CC ar:مستخدم:Omar_chamsin). - Majdal.cc: I've set it up to start now. Is it working for you? Deryck C. 21:58, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Deryck Thank you :) It's not active until the 8th, so I'll check back then. It doesn't hurt to start it earlier, but if it's too much trouble, then it's fine! On another note, the Arabic Geonotice page explicitly states to not edit it. What should I do to set the geonotice in the Arabic wiki? Majdal.cc (talk) 15:10, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- Majdal.cc: I've brought the start time of the notice forward to yesterday evening, so you should see it in your en.wp watchlist now if you're in Lebanon. I'm afraid geonotices on the Arabic Wikipedia is a separate project from here so I don't know the procedures there. Deryck C. 16:45, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- Deryck hmmm - I'm at the American University of Beirut campus, my public IP is [redacted from current edition], and I don't see the geonotice... Majdal.cc (talk) 07:50, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

05:22, 8 June 2018 (UTC)- Done. Note that this notice will run concurrently with some of the one-off events above. We generally allow up to 2 geonotices to run at each geographical location at the same time so we're fine for now, but if more one-off events come up in the Bay Area we may have to ask the regular WikiSalon to give way for a month or two in terms of geonotices. - @SuperHamster: done - have put it up notionally until 30/5 but I'm sure it'll be closed one way or another before then and can be removed. Andrew Gray (talk) 20:39, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Andrew Gray, I think this should be removed ASAP. This was not discussed and is basically nothing more than an attempt to undermine the current discussion about whether or not we should have a geonotice to begin with. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:05, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- I object generally (I think advertising the discussion on the watchlist has a similar impact amongst signed-in users to what the banner itself would be), but I agree with Courcelles that if there is to be a notice, it needs to be to Wikipedians in all geographic regions. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:39, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- @TonyBallioni: Yeaaaa, no. It wasn't an "attempt to undermine the current discussion". The discussion has had a high number of participants so I figured that this would be of interest to editors, especially U.S. editors given the topic. The notice clearly says it's about discussing a proposal, I don't see how that has the same effect as the proposed central notice. But Courcelles brings up a fair point about project-wide reputation. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:18, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- SuperHamster, my concern is that it effectively advertises the banner to all logged-in users in the US, which also in a way aids in the advocacy. That was my largest concern, and why I think it would be inappropriate, so would still object to a global watchlist message. I’m sorry if I rushed here on the intent, but I do think advertising it in the most visible method for logged-in users somewhat defeats the point of discussing it. TonyBallioni (talk) 22:33, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- TonyBallioni Gotcha - I rushed the geonotice so we can call it even! Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 23:05, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

TonyBallioni (talk) 22:33, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Agreed with TonyBallioni, this should be taken down at once. Courcelles (talk) 21:15, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Note that I wouldn't object to a global watchlist notice, but advertising it only to Americans stinks. This RFC is about the entire project, even if the effect will only be seen by Americans. Courcelles (talk) 21:37, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Why wouldn't we target it to the same American editor IPs that would be targeted by a potential banner? It's the exact population we're looking for. We should do the same for a UK or India banner - this is what geonotices are for.--Pharos (talk) 21:43, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Because this has the potential to impact the reputation of the entire site, even if just posted to the US, and the English Wikipedia is not the United States Wikipedia. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:45, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- @SuperHamster, TonyBallioni, Courcelles, and Pharos:. Oh ugh. I had assumed there was consensus for a notice about the discussion (would have looked into it more if it was an explicit call to action, obviously). I don't really have time to read up on what's going on here and I'm not sure I would want to express an opinion on it either way. I'll pull it for now but as I'm off to bed and probably won't be around to comment on it tomorrow, I will note explicitly that I am completely happy for anyone to roll this back and reinstate it if consensus emerges to do so :-) Andrew Gray (talk) 22:02, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Looks like user:Cyberpower678 has already done so, thanks. Andrew Gray (talk) 22:03, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Andrew Gray: You're fine, I didn't think this would cause issue but it has an has been removed - looks like I should have discussed it first, apologies if I mis-guided you with an assumption of consensus. If people think the notice is fine globally, then that's cool, but at this point it's probably moot given the current discussion + short timeframe. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:18, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

02:55, 25 May 2018 (UTC)- Done I've tried to emphasise the date change to keep people from getting caught out - ping me in the next few hours with any changes you'd like (I'll be around until approx 16:30 UTC). GoldenRing (talk) 12:05, 25 May 2018 (UTC)
- Dear GoldenRing. Thank you so much. I cannot confirm the Geonotice because I am hotspotting from my phone on my laptop and I guess the Geonotice is showing me outside of the permimeter of the geofence. If you are in the zone, can you please test it? Having fun! Cheers! (side pings to @Ben Creasy, Slaporte, Nikikana, Lodewijk, and Andrew Gray: so that they can test it too) -

- Dear Ben Creasy. I still do not see it. I do see the Geonotice for the Signpost. Re-pinging GoldenRing and Andrew Gray so they can look under the hood, and test it. Having fun! Cheers!

20:55, 27 May 2018 (UTC)- @Checkingfax and Ben Creasy: Apologies, I'm still new to this. I think I used the wrong sort of quotes in the javascript and was trying to use wikitext in the notice, of which it seems only a subset is supported. I've fixed the quoting issue and now when I hack my geolocation to be 36, -120, I see the notice on my watchlist. I've also replaced the wikitext bolding with the HTML version but there's a cache somewhere that needs purging for this to take effect and I'm not sure which one - this should flow through in the next little while. @Checkingfax, Ben Creasy, and GoldenRing: yeah, the ''' will upset it. You can force this with \'\'\', I think, to escape the characters. But generally speaking formatting is best avoided!
To purge an arbitrary wikipage, you can add &action=purge to the end - I tend to do this after altering any geonotices. Not sure if it actually makes a difference or not but it can't hurt. Andrew Gray (talk) 16:42, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
GoldenRing. Hey, no problem. The Watchlist Geonotice is not a dealbreaker to attract attendees. BTW, do you or Andrew Gray know how to make an SF Bay Area geotargeted Central Notice? That would be more effective for attracting attendees. I see how to make it US geotargeted, but not Lat/Lon targeted. Anyway, good job, gentlemen! Ping me back. Having fun! Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk}

- @Checkingfax: short answer "no", long answer "...but if it's possible, it will probably use much the same code as the geonotice does" (since those can switch from country to geography). It's possible that CN was never designed for narrow geotargeting since we had the watchlist geonotice system. Andrew Gray (talk) 12:19, 1 June 2018 (UTC):
