How to use

Create a Wikipedia account or log in if you already have one. Then:

  1. Make a copy of this page in your sandbox. Do not edit this page directly. ➡️ #Copy to sandbox
  2. Enter the visual editor. ➡️ #Visual editor
  3. Complete the exercises. ➡️ #Exercises
  4. To save changes at any time, press Publish changes

Video walkthrough of setup instructions

We will begin by making a copy of these exercises in your sandbox. Follow the video walkthrough on the right or the instructions below.

  1. Log into Wikipedia.
  2. Leave this page open for instructions. Open the following link in a new tab: create or edit your sandbox (Tip: To open a link in a new tab, right-click the link → select 'Open in a new tab' OR ⌃ Ctrl + click the link)
  3. On this (instructions) page:
    1. click Edit or Edit source to the left of the search box (top-right corner of your screen) and copy the text contents of the entire page. (Tip: In the text box, press ⌃ Ctrl + a to select all.)
  4. On the sandbox page (from Step 1):
    1. paste the copied content (from Step 2) into the edit box.
    2. click Publish changes to publish the page.

You should now have a copy of this page in your sandbox, which you can freely edit.

Visual editor

We will use the visual editor, which is one of two ways to edit Wikipedia. Follow the video walkthrough on the right, slides 13-18 of this deck, or the instructions below.

  1. To enter editing view, click Edit or Edit source to the left of the search box (top-right corner of your screen).
  2. If you find yourself in:
    1. visual editor ("what you see is what you get"): You are where you need to be.
    2. source editor (where content shows in monospaced font): Switch into visual editor. Click the pencil icon in the top right corner of the content box and select "visual editor".
  3. Proceed to the editing exercises.
