About The Project
[edit]Wikimedia UK received funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund Digital Skills for Heritage Initiative in March 2021. The 2 year project entitled Developing open knowledge skills, tools and communities of practice for sustainable digital preservation, is known as Connected Heritage for short. Connected Heritage aims to raise digital skills and confidence across the UK heritage sector.
Heritage organisations of all sizes across England and Wales were invited to attend a webinar to find out more about how to partner with Connected Heritage. This session illustrated how Wikimedia's Connected Heritage project could help your organisation engage with open knowledge, address skills gaps and share content over Wiki platforms.
Project Team
[edit]Two digital skills Wikimedians, Dr Lucy Hinnie (EriedgenArc (talk · contribs)) and Leah Emary (Tenuous_tree (talk · contribs)), were hired in August 2021 to coordinate and achieve delivery of the project, under the leadership of Dr Richard Nevell (Richard_Nevell (talk · contribs)). Leah left the project in March 2023, and is much missed!
The Project is now run by Richard Nevell Richard_Nevell (talk · contribs), and Lucy Hinnie EriedgenArc (talk · contribs).
Project Stages
[edit]- The first stage of the project is about reaching out to people active in the cultural and heritage sector to tell them about the project and to interest them in editing Wikimedia projects.
- The second stage involves running Wiki editing training events or offering bespoke advice or assistance to partner organisations on how to add their knowledge and collections to Wikimedia projects.
- The third stage of the project is embedding the Digital Skills Wikimedians into partner organisations for a mini-Wikimedian in Residence. These mini Wikimedian in Residences are set to run from 6 weeks to 3 months with 2-4 partner organisations.
The project was initially set to end on 31 March 2023. A second phase, building on the work of the first, has been agreed for 2023 by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and will end on 30 November 2023.
