Wikipedia:GLAM/Auckland Museum/Pacific Islands Project
Background
[edit]In assistance to the IDEA project at Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, I will be doing an audit of current Pacific Island names on wikidata to check whether current aliases are complete, along with whether associated island groups, atolls, and countries are linked and correct (as per data compilated by collection technician, Ian Brown, from Documentary Heritage during their project work on Heritage Voyaging Publications).
Scope
[edit]I will be using OpenRefine and mix 'n' match to batch review 16,423 islands across American Samoa, Australia, British Overseas Territory, Chilean Islands in the S.E. Pacific, Cook Islands, Eastern Pacific Outliers, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Japan, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Minerva Reefs, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Nuie, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, USA, Vanuatu, alongside Wallis and Futuna.
This project will be utilising a personal database compiled by Documentary Heritage Collection Technician, Ian Brown for reference in his work researching Heritage Voyaging Publications. His data has been sourced from publications such as "Pacific Island names : a map and name guide to the new Pacific" by Lee S. Motteler, Geographic Names Server (GNS), along with cross-referenced data present in publications within the Auckland Museum collection.
My goals are to ensure all alias names for islands are present and complete in their Wikidata item descriptions, that all islands missing Wikidata items are acknowledged in a task list for future creation, that relevant island groups and atolls are linked in accompanying statements, and that -where possible- Wikipedia pages are linked to their Wikidata items for the islands as they are represented in the wiki ecosystem.
None of Ian Brown's data qualifies as original research, and it has been helpful having all the information across resources compiled in one place for auditing purposes.
It is my hope that this work will improve the quality of Pacific Island representation within the Wiki sphere.
