Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War (Gyokuon-hōsō)

The Gyokuon-hōsō broadcast in which Japanese emperor Hirohito announced that Japan had lost World War II. Notable in that it was the first time a Japanese emperor had spoken directly to the common people, and in its effect on the populace: As it was delivered in an archaic form of Japanese, and as it avoided directly mentioning Japan had surrendered, it left the population in confusion.
