Original – Dean Emma Gillett, the lawyer who founded the Washington College of Law specifically to allow American women to become lawyers while established universities were refusing admission.

Wikipedia says so, so it must be true. (But in this case I think it's accurate.) "whilst [is] often considered archaic in American English" ... "The usage of whilst is chiefly British" ...
