For lighting the torch, modern games feature elaborate mechanisms such as this cauldron-spiral-cauldron arrangement lit by the 1980 U.S. Olympic ice hockey team at Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium during the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
