After Hurricanehink said that articles like this isn't a GA material, but more like FL-material and with Destroyeraa suggesting I have to go for it, I'm here to nominate this list to make this list article a featured list. My intention to get this article into a featured list is to set an example for I like hurricanes want this to be (for weeks now, they have been working only on List of Hispaniola hurricanes!). While this is an unusual reason, I do believe this article should be a featured list. Most of the WikiProject Tropical cyclones Featured lists are pretty oriented on United States. This should be the breath of a fresh air, and I would be glad to see that. Any comments could be helpful. SMB99thx my edits 08:09, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose
- Could you add anything about the climatology of storms affecting Costa Rica? Is there any weather center there?
- Yes, Instituto Meteorológico Nacional. Will try.
- Done
- Make sure everything is either in present or past tense (I recommend the latter).
- Well. Done.
- Not done. (1908) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- Fixed some.
- Be consistent whether you inflate damage totals to 2020 USD or not (I recommend not, the WPTC doesn't usually). Also, be consistent whether you do US$ or USD. You use the Costa Rican currency for Otto but no other storms, so consistency would be appreciated.
- I choose in year USD and removed the inflations. I'm not sure about adding CRC to all every other storms (as I need 1900s CRC to do this), instead I made the CRC into footnotes. Done
- "Therefore, Nineteen remains the only tropical storm recorded to make landfall in Costa Rica." - source?
- Removed. Appears to be WP:OR.
- Was there any updated status on the 29 missing people from Cesar? That source (a dead link) is from 1996, so maybe there's some more updated info.
- No, I believe.
- I did some research and found some other death tolls, so would you mind double checking in Spanish? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- "The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Panama alerted officials in Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala about the possible impacts from Beta." - this seems unneeded, both because it mentions other countries, and because it mentions possible impacts. The article should be about actual impacts.
- Removed
- There's no need to mention that a storm caused no fatalities. That's implied if you don't mention it.
- Removed
- The flooding was the worst to hit the country in recent years, leading to the "biggest crisis in Costa Rican history" according to President Luis Guillermo Solís.[citation needed] - please add source
- Yes. Done. (the original source is dead, so I used the Weather Underground source instead)
- "Flooding from Hurricane Patricia damaged 10 homes in Jacó." - could you provide some more context for this? Like, mentioning where the storm was in relation to the country.
- Done. Precursor disturbance of Hurricane Patricia in Central America
- That's a bit grammatically awkward. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- " Hurricane Irene caused damages of $1 million (USD) to banana crops in Costa Rica.[7]" - ditto, more context would be helpful
- I assume that my grammatical errors are the cause of this. By the way, Irene caused $1 million 1971 USD in damages to the banana crops in Costa Rica. Done.
- No, more like, where did Irene go? How did it cause $1M in damage? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- heavy rain from the indirect effects of Marco affected parts of the country for three days - awkward grammar
- Fixed. Heavy rains from Marco
- "Material damage from Nate across Costa Rica is estimated at ₡106 billion (US$185 million).[52] Total damages caused by the hurricane in Costa Rica are estimated at ₡322.1 billion (US$562 million),[35] making it the costliest natural disaster in Costa Rican history." - what's the difference between material damage and total damages?
- Material damages generally involve infrastructure damage, IIRC. Total damages include agricultural damages. Fixed
- Considering how long Nate's section is, could you just list total damage? That's what you do for other storms. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- "Infrared satellite imagery showing Nate bringing heavy rain in masse to Nicaragua and Costa Rica" - this is the caption of Nate's image. The "in masse" is weird
- Fixed.
- I don't know what the "en masse" means though, it's awkwardly written. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- Are you quite sure you've gotten every known storm to affect the country? Just a day ago, I mentioned six storms that were missing, and that was only with a brief search of mine.
- I'm pretty sure that I get every known storm to affect the country, including Tropical Depression Twelve-E (2011). I tried to add Hurricane Felix, but there is no mention about impacts of Hurricane Felix in Costa Rica. What I can find is [2], which mentions only possible impacts.
- Watch out for overlinking.
- Whoa! My goodness! I'll clamped it down. Done
- Check again, there are still a lot of redundant links. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- "The 1906 Florida Keys hurricane forms near Costa Rica" - this is an unofficial name, so I wouldn't call it the "1906 Florida keys hurricane" here.
- Done.
- Don't call it "hurricane eight" either though, since that's not a name, it's just the designation in HURDAT. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- While I get that Nate was CR's costliest storm, it seems to be a bit lengthy compared to the other storms. How did you decide how much content is included for each storm?
- I didn't decide it (I decided only for these six storms), but I'm responsible for nominating this into FL. Hurricane Nate is the worst storm on Costa Rica, which is why it's more lengthy.
- It seems like you just copied the section from the storm article. It's 15 lines long, twice as long as Gert's section (even though Nate did 181 times the amount of damage). So I'll ask again, how did you decide how much info to include for each storm? Did you include all known info? Or just a summary of each storm? Most FL's for storm effects by location are just a summary of the storm's impacts. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- The Climatology section doesn't have the right numbers.
- Updated.
The article is in pretty good shape, but I don't think it's ready for FLC yet. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:34, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- This is why I hesitated to nominate this for FL. I want to make this article GA, but unfortunately it should be a FL. SMB99thx my edits 01:11, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- Also, where in Otto's TCR does it back up the bit about the 1887 storm? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:26, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- None, so I removed it. SMB99thx my edits 01:44, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- @Hurricanehink: I think I fixed some but not all. What do you think? Thanks. SMB99thx my edits 10:58, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Few more comments, and some concerns about comprehensiveness.
- Hurricanes are uncommon in the country, as only a dozen have been recorded in history. - there's 18
- How come you have notes of the Costa Rican currency for only storms going back to 1998?
- Could you get a link for ref 23? This provides the same info, sans the missing people.
- This site lists over 100 storms that indirectly affected the country. I'm not sure if they're all worth adding, the site doesn't say anything about their impacts (just that they passed within a certain distance). The site is in Spanish, so there might be some climatology stuff worth adding.
- This site says 85 storms affected Costa Rica.
- More information (in Spanish)
- More info
- More info about the 1887 storm
- I suggest creating a "Background" or "Climatology" section so you don't have to have references in the lead. You could talk about Costa Rica, its location/population, how often it's hit/affected, why it's so uncommonly affected, that kinda stuff.
I'm not sure how you want to handle the potentially hundred missing storms. I don't mean to be picky - you've done a good job so far with the article. It just falls short of what a featured list should be IMO. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- I think this is beyond my capability (again, content creation is not my strength). If there is a "good list" category, I might could pull this off. Withdrawing my nomination for now, I think this is little bit too premature (as said by Destroyeraa). Thank you, Hurricanehink. I'll try to fix some time to time, but it might need to take months. (see Talk:List of Bermuda hurricanes) SMB99thx my edits 00:34, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. It's a good start! There used to be a good list category, but not anymore. These lists by location require a lot of work to make sure they're comprehensive. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:14, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- @SMB99thx: You are NOT allowed to close this. You are not a coordinator. Please don't do that again. @Giants2008, PresN, and The Rambling Man: He has withdrawn and closed it himself. Is everything that needed to be done, done? NoahTalk 10:22, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
