This is an essay on civility.

It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints.

Editors when debating what should or should not be included in articles often base their arguments on Duty, Safety, or Doing the Right Thing. These debates most often occur on current events.

"Because people are illogically killing hogs, we should remove all references to swine from the name of this disease."
"Because people may hurt themselves, we should not put this in the article."
"Because Ron Paul said it, we need to put it in the article; He is a doctor."

These arguments are based on emotion, a sense of duty, and a false sense of what Wikipedia is for.
