Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to The Clash (including individual members' work). This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to do list.

(See the assessment department for more details.)

The Clash were one of the most successful and influential bands of the 1970s/80s. The Clash article itself is a good article and must be absolutely promoted to featured status, there are dozens of other articles about The Clash which still require a lot of work. In addition, there is a shortage of fair-use images, poor referencing, and a large number of redirects and stubs which need expansion. It is the goal of this project to unite the many Clash fans and Wikipedia editors to improve the myriad of Clash-related articles. For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject and Wikipedia:WikiProject/Best practices.

Scope

[edit]

The primary goal of the project is to improve all articles related to The Clash. The first major challenge is to improve the most important Clash-related articles - specifically The Clash, Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Topper Headon and The Clash discography - to a level where they can become featured articles on the Wikipedia.

Parentage

[edit]

The Clash covered so many genres, so this WikiProject is therefore a sub-project of numerous collaborations:

Goals

[edit]

Please discuss on the talk page or be bold and add some!

  1. Unify and improve articles about the 4 main Clash
  2. Unify and improve articles about albums
  3. Unify and improve articles about songs
  4. Promote major Clash-related articles to featured status.
  5. Create articles for all Clash songs which currently don't have an article or simply consist of a redirect to the album. Some song stubs can not be expanded and should be redirects to the album. See WP:NSONG.
  6. Locate and upload images under free license (such as The Clash) for use in various articles.

Projects

[edit]
  1. Major work on the 4 members of the band (Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon) is needed. Expansion where necessary, adding references (which are scant or absent in most of the articles) and copyediting is needed.
  2. Compile a list of current and missing articles, and catalogue them by status - see Assessment and Wikipedia articles on The Clash
  3. Create any missing articles necessary.
  4. Bring all articles considered "Top-Importance" to GA status or higher.
  5. Bring all articles considered "High-Importance" to B-Class status or higher.
  6. Expand any articles considered "Mid-Importance" to at least Start-Class status.
  7. Upgrade any articles considered "Stub" to Start, Start to C, C to B, B to A, and so on.
  8. insert other projects (big jobs) here from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject The Clash

Tasks

[edit]
  1. Placing the WikiProject The Clash template on all talk pages of any article even peripherally related to The Clash. If possible, assess the articles as well. Those that have already been assessed, and the guidelines for assessment, can be found on the assessment sub-page. Automatic logs on the sub-page are updated every 24 hours or so, although mention of assessments can also be placed in the log. If you don't feel comfortable with assessing the article, simply placing the template WikiProject The Clash on the article's talk page is enough, someone else will assess it later.
  2. Make sure infoboxes for various band members are correct (Infobox Musical artist or Infobox Biography where appropriate) and correct accordingly. Individual articles include (but are not limited to; please expand, and remove those which have been confirmed or fixed):
    1. Joe Strummer
    2. Mick Jones
    3. Paul Simonon
    4. Topper Headon
To Do List
  1. Buy a book about The Clash (for a list see the Further reading section on The Clash article, and for a more extensive list check out this project page)
  2. Invite new members by contacting editors who have made substantial Clash-related edits in the past
  3. Fix templates to talk pages (use What Links Here for the Clash template, that'll locate every article which uses the template, and any not properly categorised articles can be dealt with at the same time).
  4. Construct Wikipedia:WikiProject The Clash/Assessment by following the category 'tree' (what that means is update this table: Wikipedia:WikiProject_The_Clash/Categories as the automated code reads it and using what links here for the Clash template. Can do the talk page notices at the same time.
  5. Assess articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject The Clash/Assessment
  6. Add specific fair use rationales to Clash-related copyrighted images, especially album covers.
  7. Add the geographic coordinates of Clash significant places as: Pimlico, Tate Gallery, Wessex Studios, Highbury, etc. As already exist for the Shea Stadium.
  8. insert other tasks (smaller jobs) here from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject The Clash

Adopt an article

[edit]

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced. The same article can be adopted by more than one member.

In order to track our progress as a community, whenever you perform some notable work on the following goals and projects please add a note in the log letting us all know where we are on our goals.

Project awards

[edit]

The Guitarist Barnstar can be awarded to any project member you want to recognize for service to the project. Add it to their Talk page with .

The Music Barnstar can be awarded to any Wikipedian that exhibits exceptional effort and dedication to music-related articles. Add it to their Talk page with .

Guidelines

[edit]

Following the guidelines already established by music, albums, and films for Wikiprojects for infoboxes and the like creates consistency across the Wikipedia. Please discuss any specific changes that you feel should be modified on the talk page.

Use of the Cite.php system for references across all articles covered by the Wikiproject is recommended.

As the band is from the United Kingdom, all articles should be written using UK English spelling and grammar, including treating the band name as a plural noun; i.e. "The Clash were a band", not "The Clash was a band".

The guidelines for achieving high quality in music-related articles, 'MUSTARD (MUsic STAndaRDs), are largely based on Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and common practice. WikiProject Music quality standards are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Music/MUSTARD, and include guidelines in the following areas:

Citations

[edit]

In accordance with Wikipedia policy, facts and assertions should be attributed to verifiable, reliable sources wherever possible (see WP:V and WP:RS).

The Project's preferred method for this is inline citations using the [1]

Citing a book multiple times: Author (yyyy). Book, City: Editor. ISBN XXXXXXXXXX.

[2]

Reusing a reference in the same article: [3]

Second use [3]

You should use the cite book, cite journal, cite video, cite episode and cite web templates included in the tags, and in References, Bibliography, Books or Further reading sections.

Some examples:

  • Using a reference and a cite book template:
     [4];
    • reusing the same reference: ;[4]
  • using a wikilink to the template's ref value (_note-Best_of_the_Clash): #_note-Best_of_the_Clash. This method should be useful to link to a reference placed in another page, or to link to a section on the same page.

References

[edit]

The citations are displayed by placing a reflist template at the bottom of the article.

To create small footnotes in any number of columns, use number of columns or which will allow the browser to automatically choose the number of columns based on the width of the web browser.

Templates

[edit]

There are a lot of useful templates that may be relevant, infoboxes, notification boxes, and so forth. If you know of resources not listed here please add them!

Infoboxes

[edit]

Following are useful infoboxes which should be used in a standard form across the project's articles, although some discussion may be required about which are most appropriate for a given subject.

There are several useful infoboxes that are relevant to this project, as the project covers a large number of types of articles.

  • Members of The Clash are people. So the Infobox person template is likely to be useful. Hopefully most relevant articles have it already by now, but this is something to check for. You can use it this way: Infobox person Some examples:
    • none
  • The Clash produced albums, together and individually. So the Infobox album template is likely to be useful. Hopefully most relevant articles have it already by now, but this is something to check for. You can use it this way: Infobox album Some examples:

In addition to the writeup on the talk page of the infobox, the WikiProject Albums page has some discussion on how to effectively use these, color coding, and what some of the fields mean and so forth, as well as larger guidance on how Album pages ought to be done (how the track list is formatted, dates, usages, and so forth).

Some important points copied from that page: When you create or find a new album page, please add WikiProject Albums to the top of the talk page. If the page has no infobox, you should use instead. If the page has an incomplete infobox, note the missing details at Incomplete infobox. If the page has an old style infobox, add to the bottom of the talk page.

  • The Clash produced songs and singles, together and individually. So the Infobox song template is likely to be useful. Hopefully most relevant articles have it already by now, but this is something to check for. You can use it this way: Infobox song Some examples:

Note that the template supports ordering of singles by when they charted.

Article template

[edit]

The template which should be placed on all Clash-related talk pages, with an assessment, is WPClash. See the template's documentation page for proper formatting of the template.

Place this template in the talk page of an article that you think belongs in the project:

WikiProject iconThe Clash (inactive)
WikiProject iconThis article is within the scope of WikiProject The Clash, a project which is currently considered to be inactive.

by including this text at the very top of the page: WPClash

This template is also used for article classification (usage instructions). Do not subst it!

Stub templates

[edit]

Category:Stub-Class_The_Clash_articles lists articles considered as stubs. There are currently about thirty-three articles listed.

NOTE: stubs are managed by the Stub-sorting WikiProject. Before creating a new stub, you should propose it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals. See Wikipedia:Stub for general guidelines on creating stub templates and categories. It is inadbisable to create new stub templates without consultation as these will probably be nominated for deletion.
[edit]

The Clash template should appear on all major articles (if it doesn't already). It is unnecessary on articles about individual songs and should be removed from song articles, and is probably not necessary in articles about more peripheral subjects. Place it at the bottom of the article by including this text: The Clash. The result is:

The Clash singles template should appear on all articles about single and b-side (if it doesn't already). It is unnecessary on articles about individual songs. Place it at the bottom of the song article by including this text: The Clash singles. The result is:

Invitation template

[edit]

If you see someone that might have an interest in the project, you can place this template on their userpage to invite them.

Hi! I've seen you around on Clash articles... Would you consider becoming a member of WikiProject The Clash, a WikiProject which aims to expand and improve coverage of The Clash on Wikipedia? Please feel free to join us.
"Know Your Rights"... Listen to this / Run ... to join us!

Todo:

Highest priority

Fair use

  • Add fair use rationale to all images and sound samples (all except images already labeled free use).
  • Resize large "fair use" images to less than 300 pixels, @ 72dpi.

Articles

  • Try to expand all songs stubs if possible. Some song stubs can not be expanded and should be redirects to the album. See WP:NSONG.
  • Expand album articles (all).
  • Remove Trivia sections (trivia sections should be avoided in favor of presenting information within the framework of the article's main text).

Needing attention

Project building

  • Add WikiProject The Clash banner WPClash to all appropriate talk pages of all Clash-related articles.
  • Add/update assessments for all project pages.
  • Personally invite quality editors working on The Clash articles to join the project.

If you complete one of these tasks, please remove it from the list and add your achievement to the project log.

by including this text: WikiProject The Clash Invite

  • DO put some commentary below it, explaining WHY they might be interested, and sign. Alternatively, you may leave a message and sign within the template by supplying an optional parameter: – ~~~~
  • DO NOT spam people extensively, give it some thought first and don't invite too many people at once.

It makes sense to grow the project participation slowly so use with care. But it's a fun template, a bit more attention grabbing than just a note.

Membership template

[edit]

Members of the project may want to put the User WPClash infobox on their user page, which appears below:

This user participates in
WikiProject The Clash.

You can place this template on your userpage to show project membership.

To identify yourself without using the userbox, add this to the bottom of your user page:

Placing one of these on your pages is entirely optional but is a way to show your involvement to others... that's good for the project as we have lots of work to do!

Wikipedia articles on The Clash

[edit]

This is only a short list of the most important articles: look at Category:The Clash for a more extensive list.

[edit]

Please feel free to list your new Clash-related articles here (newer articles at the top, please). Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Main Wikipedia page. DYK has a 5-day time limit from the creation of the article.

Missing Articles

[edit]

Redlinks which need to be turned blue at the earliest opportunity need to be listed here. If you can help by creating a stub (or better!) please be bold and go right ahead (In brackets: number of incoming links from main space, excluding redirects and dab pages):

Article creation instructions

[edit]

You're starting a new article? Great! Please follow these instructions:

  • Articles about The Clash are generally considered to be articles with a "strong tie" to the dialect of the United Kingdom and should be written in British English.
  • Add the new article to the appropriate subcategory of Category:The Clash, or to the parent category if most appropriate
  • Add any appropriate template to the article, such as an album or single infobox
  • Place the Template:Talkheader (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) and WPClash templates on the new article's Talk page
  • If the article is listed as a redlink on the to-do list, please, remove it from that list
  • If the article needs a photo and you don't have one, place a Reqphoto template on the talk page and add the article to "Wanted Pics/Graphics" on the the to-do list
  • List the article in the appropriate category on the Article Classification list. Don't classify it yourself, it's best if we classify each other's articles not our own
  • Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Main Wikipedia page. DYK has a 120-hour time limit (from the creation of the article, not the nomination)
  • Finally (hooray!) record your wonderful achievement on the Project Log
