Fall 2021 Course Overview and Important Dates

Overarching goals of Wikipedia Longitudinal Project:

  • Use the EBM skills taught in the course (identify a gap or error, search for sources to provide the missing information, assess the validity of the sources, apply the evidence to the article and communicate in a clear lay language format) as an applied exercise to improve Wikipedia content
  • Expose students to the world’s most used medical resource, enhancing understanding of its benefits and flaws, and helping make it better for others

1. DIL (students only) 50 minutes – October 19th 9:30-10:30. 

  • Goal: Students will sign up for Wikipedia and the Wikipedia tracking dashboard, work together to review their page, and work on assignment 1, the page critique
  • Task 1: Each team member needs to complete steps 1-3 in Getting Started before 11:30pm, Oct 19, 2021. (Note: these three steps take 5 minutes to complete and help us set up the Wikipedia accounts for this course and track your progress)
  • Task 2. Start Assignment # 1, Wikipedia Article Structured Critique (mandatory group assignment (marked as complete/incomplete)
  • Assignment # 1 is Due October 25th 11:30pm (Marked and returned by faculty tutor for your group by Nov 1st at noon)
  • How to submit your assignment: One member from each group a) uploads a single group document to Gradebook. b) emails the group assignment directly to your faculty tutor. The faculty tutor will provide formative feedback to the group by Nov 1st. You will be using feedback from this assignment to guide your discussion about the article and where your edits should focus when you meet your tutors on Nov 1st.
  • Note: If your group has been assigned two Wikipedia articles, please split up your group. Each group member only needs to review one article and this will be the same article that you will improve later on in this course.


2. SGL (tutors and students) 50 minutes November 1st 1:30-2:20

  • Goal: Understand how evidence is shared on Wikipedia, meet your faculty expert and prepare for assignment 2
  • Task 1: Students meet the experts and there is a short presentation on secondary sources for Wikipedia (why/how) and assignment 2 details (literature search).
  • Task 2: Divide and conquer areas of focus for the article together with the experts – every student leaves with a single focused area for their work on the page and for assignment 2.


3. DIL (students only) 50 minutes  November 1st 2:30-3:20

  • Task: Students work on Assignment 2 – literature search (individual project one page each).
    • Assignment 2 is due at 11:30pm on November 2th
    • How to submit your assignment: Please complete this assignment individually but hand it in as a group (upload one document to Elantra that includes one page per person in the group) and also email a copy of the group document to your tutor. This assignment will be marked by the health librarians and returned to students by November 15th.


4. SGL 100 minutes November 15rd 1:30-3:20 **

  • 1:30-2:20 (tutors and students) (first 50 minutes):
    • Goal: Plan the page improvements and prepare to share the proposed improvements in assignment 3
    • Task 1:Faculty tutors and students work together to plan the changes to the page based on the papers found in the search
    • Task 2: Students should finish this session being prepared to complete assignment 3

  • 2:30-3:20 (students only) -second 50 minutes- :
    • Goal: Learn how to edit Wikipedia including communication on the article talk pages, adding citations, and improving Wikipedia articles
    • Task 1: Students work through an interactive Wikipedia training with Dr. Dawson Link to Slides Skills: Practice editing in the 'Sandbox' area on Wikipedia, add 'Wikilinks' to text, add citations using Wikipedia's citation tool, learn about 'Talk Pages'
    • Task 2:One member of your group must post on your article talk page to let the community know that you are improving the page. This task takes less than 5 minutes and must be completed before the end of the November 16th (ideally during this session). Please use this template: Talk Page Template

5. DIL (students only ) 50 minutes November 18thth 4:30-5:30

  • Students work on Assignment 3 – individual planned changes to the page (prior to editing the actual Wikipedia article).
  • Assignment # 3 is due November 19, 11:30pm. Marked by faculty and will be returned to students by November 26th (noon at latest).(both emailed to tutors and anonymous final version in your sandbox on Wikipedia
  • How to submit Assignment # 3: Please email your tutor a copy of the Assignment # 3 in a word document (with your name at the top) and copy and paste a copy to your Sandbox in your Wikipedia account (remove your name from the Wikipedia version).

6. SGL (Tutors and students) 50 minutes November 29 1:30-2:20

Students and tutors will work together to make their changes online – start/finish the editing work. There will be support from Dr. Dawson to guide those changes and she will be available afterwards for questions and additional support as needed.
