Function Details: It has been discussed on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting#Splitting_the_WSS_list_page. Short version: the master page that contains Wikipedia stubs is Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types, which is maintained manually by the project members. However, it is rather tedious to find an appropriate stub type, mainly because the page is about 1 MB in size. This bot will generate shorter derived pages, each with a warning that they are not supposed to be edited manually. The exact number and format of the generated pages is open for discussion with the project members, but it will be something like User:Hankwang/sandbox/stubindex. During the trial run, I will experiment with various formats in a sandbox. Regarding edit rate: it will probably be more than this number during manually-assisted debugging in the sandbox, and less than 5/day in the final version unless there is a lot of activity in the main stub index.

Discussion

So far as I can see the argument for this doesn't have much to do with "tediousness" (which is surely a function of the number of items in the list, about which not much can be done), and is basically to do with the size of the page and browser problems that some have reported. I also don't think that the "linkless" version is as useful as one with individual template links would be, but granted that would somewhat increase the size back again. At any rate, this seems benign enough, so long as the page makes clear it's an automatic "mirror", and that people shouldn't be trying to maintain it by hand. Approved for trial. Please provide a link to the relevant contributions and/or diffs when the trial is complete. I see no problems here. Go for the trial and test away on the sandbox. Please post the results of your trials here for inspection within 1 week. StubListBot (talk · contribs) has done a successful test run, on User:Hankwang/sandbox/Stubindex2 and subpages. As can be seen from the contributions list I made a mistake that caused it to overwrite pages in a different namespace; I reverted the edits immediately and fixed the program. Unfortunately, there has not been any response yet on the Wikiproject stub sorting talk page yet. Han-Kwang 21:07, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
