Operator: Tim Pierce
Automatic or Manually Assisted: automatic
Programming Language(s): Python / pywikipedia
Function Summary: Find photograph requests in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs that can be easily categorized, and place them in an appropriate subcategory.
Edit period(s) (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): continuous
Edit rate requested: 2 edit per minute
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): N
Function Details: Category:Wikipedia requested photographs contains thousands of photograph requests. Most of these belong in a subcategory, and many of them can be categorized automatically. e.g. a photo request in {{WikiProject Massachusetts}} really belongs in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Massachusetts. This bot will crawl Category:Wikipedia requested photographs and add parameters to {{reqphoto}} when it finds articles that can be classified automatically.
A complete list of the rules this bot would use to categorize photo requests is at User:PhotoCatBot.
Discussion
[edit]You're not going to get approval of 1 edit per second. 1) It isnt classed as an "urgent task", and 2) you probably cant edit at that rate anyway. Other than the edit rate, it sounds fine. Somewhere between 6-10 edits per minute would be much more reasonable. Reedy Boy 17:48, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm happy to reduce the edit rate. I saw other proposals asking for 5 edits per second so thought that asking for 1 per second would be more reasonable. :-) Tim Pierce 17:51, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- They were probably 5 per minute ;) Reedy Boy 19:10, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Trial away, maybe one edit every 60s or so for 50 edits. -- Tawker 18:10, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Approved for trial (50 edits). Please provide a link to the relevant contributions and/or diffs when the trial is complete. i think is a bit fairer. Reedy Boy 19:10, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks! The bot has performed 53 edits today under my supervision and I'm pleased with the results so far. What next? :-) Tim Pierce 04:07, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- The bot appears to be duplicating template parameters as in [1] this dif, the needs-photo= parameter was not completed, but duplicated. — xaosflux Talk 05:08, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for pointing this out -- I will fix the bug and test again, another 50 edits or so (if that's acceptable). Tim Pierce 17:15, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- I've fixed the bug and confirmed that it does the right thing on articles that already have a needs-photo parameter: e.g. [2] [3]. Tim Pierce 21:49, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, the bot has completed 400 semiautomated edits now (in batches of 5-10 at a time, with my oversight). What's the next step? :-) Tim Pierce 15:27, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Looks Fine. Bot shall run with a flag - Approved. Reedy Boy 21:59, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
