How to Participate: Five Basic Steps

[edit]
Step 1: Finding an article that needs a reference (please open the links below in a new screen to easily find back this project page)
  • Option 1: Click on this link to find a random article that needs a reference. Advice: Open this link in a new tab/window so you can easily find back this project page.
  • Option 2: Use the tool Citation Hunt. Note: Click Next! to skip this one and go to another page, click I got this! if you can add a reference.
Step 2: Finding the reference missing tag in the article
  • Go in the article to the part where the reference is needed. Note: There might be multiple places in the article where a reference is requested.
  • An easy way to find the place where the reference is needed is by using the search function of your browser, often Ctrl + F, and search for [citation needed] in the article.
Step 3: Finding a reliable source that confirms the text for what a reference is needed
  • Use Google or Pubmed and your experience to find a reliable source. What counts as a reliable source is explained at WP:RS (WP:MEDRS for health care related topics).
  • If it takes you more than a few minutes to find a source, we suggest you go to another article (step 1).
  • If you can't find a source, just go to the next one (step 1).
Step 4: Inserting the source you found
  1. Click on the edit button at the top of the page.
  2. Remove the reference missing tag: place the cursor behind the tag and use the Backspace key on your keyboard.
  3. Click in the top bar on Cite
  4. Enter in the field the URL, ISBN, etc + click Generate
  5. If it is successful, you get a blue button labelled Insert on what you click.
    • If it is not successful, you get an error message, click then on Manual to enter some info about the reference manually. After that you click Insert.
Step 5: Save changes & you're done!
