Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Article not appearing in a category

Can someone figure out why 2013–14 Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball team is not appearing in Category:NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship Final Four seasons? Jrcla2 (talk) 14:04, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is; it's just on the second page of results (amusingly enough, there are exactly 201 articles currently in that category, and only 200 can display on the page). Just click the "next 200" link at the bottom of the category list. Yunshui  14:09, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow, I feel like an idiot. I didn't even notice that there are now 201+ articles. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 14:45, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If that's the worst issue you have editing Wikipedia then Jimbo wants you to take his place. :) :) Naraht (talk) 14:57, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    I'd consider it, in all honesty! Jrcla2 (talk) 15:00, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because you'd like to take his place or because this means all worse issues that you have would go away? :)Naraht (talk) 16:44, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Both. It'd be kind of neat to be in charge of Wikimedia. Jrcla2 (talk) 17:30, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Jimbo isn't "in charge of Wikimedia". In any event, have you seen some of the crap he has to put up with on his talk page?!--ukexpat (talk) 00:27, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Missing email address

I have forgotten my password, which I haven't used for several years. The Reset Password function tells me there is no email address on my account (roryjohnston) to send a reset to. What can I do? I don't want to open a new account because that will lose the connection with the histories on the work I have already done on the article Denis Johnston. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.167.60.98 (talk) 02:08, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Basically the advice is that you have to create a new account - see Help:Logging_in#What if I forget the password? for more information and suggestions of what to do about linking past edits, etc. I expect it's because there's no longer any way to really verify that someone claiming to be an inactive user is really that user without the associated email address, etc. I expect it could be overridden at some administrative level, but they would be unlikely to want to do this. --jjron (talk) 05:02, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For merging another account's contribution history to your current one, see WP:USURP. And this time, don't forget to activate your email. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:42, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm so frustrated my page was deleted so fast because I took info directly from a website, obviously violating copyright I guess - the problem is it was my website!!! It was my material! I'm mad because I don't know how to retrieve all my hard work, and I'm not sure how to fix this problem. The help pages on this issue are too technical. I want to be able to put MY writing (unalterable) from MY website (unalterable) onto Wikipedia where it will be subject to appropriate editing. Tell me exactly what code I need to insert, and where, so that I can fix this fast. Thx. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dargavel (talkcontribs) 11:56, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to release the material on your website under a Creative Commons CC-BY-SA licence, which you can do by placing a notice on the site itself. Before you do so, you should be aware that such a release is irrevocable - you can't decide later that you don't want to release the material - and that it allows anyone (not just Wikipedia) to reuse or alter your work for any reason, including for commercial purposes, as long as they attribute it back to you.
It's also worth noting that the information provided in the previous version of the page did not indicate that Paul Fairfield meets the relevant inclusion guidelines, nor did it cite any reliable, independent sources - these would also be reasons for the article to be speedily deleted. Yunshui  12:02, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine. What should I say in this notice? were there other issues with my wiki page that I should be aware of? I thought my my cites (University websites) were reliable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dargavel (talkcontribs) 12:07, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

University bios are not independent of the subject - you need to find significant coverage in reliable sources that are not in any way affiliated with Prof. Fairfield. For the licence code, go to the Creative Commons selection page and choose a licence that allows share-alike adaptation and commercial use. Then just copy the code onto your website. Yunshui  12:15, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, this is silly. Firstly, I do not wish to change the copyright of my webpage www.paulfairfield.com. Paul is my husband. Can I use Quotations or something? I'm not sure how to reference his place of birth and year. Can Paul somehow authorize this information himself? Should I use Amazon as a reference for his books? Surely Paul Fairfield himself can verify this information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dargavel (talkcontribs) 12:27, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you wish to retain the current licence on your website that's your prerogative, but it does mean that the text cannot be used on Wikipedia. As far as sourcing goes, verifiability isn't a major issue - the problem you are liable to run into is that it doesn't appear as if Prof. Fairfield is sufficiently notable for Wikipedia to have an article on him. That's in no way a value judgement; "notable", here, has the very specific meaning of "extensively written about in reliable third-party sources". His books, his employer or his own words are not sufficient to meet that requirement; you will need to cite significant coverage in sources which are not directly related to him or his work. I realise that you are frustrated by Wikipedia's policies, but they dictate how this website operates, and you will need to read them and abide by them if you want to edit here. To trim it down for you, the minimum you need to look at is WP:PROF, which explains what Wikipedia considers notable for academics, and WP:42, which explains (in a very truncated format) the minimum requirements for sourcing. Amazon, for example, is not a suitable source. Yunshui  12:36, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I've seen plenty of other professors ON Wikipedia with only similar references. I was under the mistaken impression that Wiki was open to additions and editing by anyone on ANY subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dargavel (talkcontribs) 12:46, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, there are a lot of other articles that have slipped by and dont meet the requirements and should also be removed. Because this is a wiki, you can help! by providing third party sources or tagging with {{notable}}. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:54, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, I wouldn't have bothered on this pointless venture had I not seen half a dozen other professors, similarly displayed on wiki. I attempted to model my page after theirs, so I'm sure you can understand my frustration. Perhaps if consistencies were in existence here I would be less so. Thanks for your "help". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dargavel (talkcontribs) 12:50, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

For the WP:Notability issue you could create a section "Publications" or similar listing some of your books, but it would be really better to wait until somebody else free of a conflict of interest tackled this. Or check out the wonders of the articles for creation procedure. –Be..anyone (talk) 12:57, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've read your notability criterion for academics and Paul Fairfield certainly meets them. We wanted to be able to elaborate on his wiki page over time but I guess you have to put it all out there to be accepted. Okay. In some time when I prepared to attempt this again, I will do so. In the meantime I will be tagging non-compliers. Sorry for my frustration, and thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dargavel (talkcontribs) 13:02, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

NO, you should NOT attempt to create an article about your husband again in the future. It is against our conflict of interest policies. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:38, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Lost ability to see pictures

    Hello,

By some event that I cannot understand I have lost the ability to see any pictures on wikipedia (English, German). The text displays fine, but the accompanying pictures simply are not there. How can I get them back?

    Please help, Alfred 97.92.85.234 (talk) 14:53, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you haven't already done so, try a reboot. When running low on memory, pics are often not displayed, and a reboot frees up more memory. StuRat (talk) 14:59, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tried, but it didn't help. But I tried using Safari instead of Firefox, and in Safari the pictures display. However, the missing picture problem is confined to wikipedia in Firefox and apparently does not affect other sites. I rarely use a browser other than Firefox, so I don't really want to switch to Safari just so that wikipedia displays correctly. Do you have a Firefox extension installed that blocks adverts from certain sites? You may have accidentally blocked "upload.wikimedia.org", the domain that provides most of the images on Wikipedia pages. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:49, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Content validity conflict

Hello! How to handle disagreements with other users over content? I made a short addition to the subject about Vikings, then shortly after 2 users disagreed and deleted my contribution. I re-added my contribution with justification, only to have my contribution deleted again. I then added it back. It seems this will never end. Girls Preparatory School

I am the Director of Communications at Girls Preparatory School and attempted to make some edits to our Wikipedia page this morning. There was much that needed editing. I previewed and saved the page after making the edits and noted that the new information came up on the page when I did another Google search. However, now it seems that someone by the name of Pratyya Ghosh undid our school's requested revisions. This message came up on the edit page: Undid revision 602125170 by Pratyya Ghosh (talk) I have a login and password for making changes. What other qualifying information is needed so that I can revise text that is incorrect or, as was the case, inappropriately added by someone who does not have the authority to rewrite our school's descriptions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aexum (talkcontribs) 17:46, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You have a conflict of interest so you are strongly advised not to edit the article. You do not own it, so please use the article's talk page to suggest the edits that you think should be made, supported by references to independent sources.--ukexpat (talk) 17:49, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    April 1

    Hello,

I am a PR rep for Ryan Seacrest and requesting assitance from an editor to make some updates to his Wikipedia page. I am unable to make the edits myself due to a conflict of interest. We would like to update the page with news of his investments, new TV shows, and growth of RSF.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Seacrest123 (talkcontribs) Seacrest123 (talkcontribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.

The edit request template goes on the talk page of the article you'd like to request an article of. In this case, that would be Talk:Ryan Seacrest. Dismas|(talk) 00:23, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But please note, Seacrest123 that the information you want added should be referenced to reliable sources independent of Seacrest, and that the decision whether or not the information is appropriate to the article will be made by editors unconnected with him. --ColinFine (talk) 10:42, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Which template?

Is there a template if we know that someone was Xyears old in December of a certain year that it will calculate the age appropriately? {{Birth year and age}}, is currently being used but it is giving an age range. We know what the age is in every month except December when he will be one age up until the unknown day in December and then one year older the next day. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 00:31, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    I'm not sure it's correct, but {{BirthDeathAge}} may work. - Purplewowies (talk) 00:39, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I created my page but is marked to be deleted on April 8th unless I include reliable source. I have many reliable sources but I do not know how to include them. I tried to follow the write up on it but didn't understand. I have also uploaded a picture of myself which it does not seem to appear on the page. Can you help me with these issues please? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sgsajjadi (talkcontribs) 01:26, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

According to the "Conflict of interest" policy you may not create an article about yourself. So the article will be deleted. Jc3s5h (talk) 01:34, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Jc3s5h: That page does not state that it is completely forbidden (and certainly not grounds for deletion, unless CSD G11 applies).
To editor Sgsajjadi: You can learn how to add references by going through the introduction to referencing. Alternatively, you can leave a message on the talk page of the article (Talk:Shahrdad G Sajjadi) with some sources. Anon126 (talk - contribs) 02:13, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Talk tab colour

Hello, when the word Talk of the talk page tab of an article is blue, I often click on it to see if there are any disagreements about the content of the article. I am used to do this as well when using Wikipedia to learn something, not only when editing.

On the English Wikipedia however, many talk pages only consist of a template with information about ratings, Wikiprojects, etc. I am not interested in those templates, so this causes many times a disappointment about unnecessary page loading. I once read that other people sharing this feeling made some gadget or so which changes the colour of 'Talk' in these cases. So there is not only red (when there is no talk page) and blue but also green, for example, for template-only 'Talk' pages. The word Talk only being blue when there is really talk.

I forgot to bookmark the place where I read this and now I can't find it any-more. Does anybody know about this?

Hi. Is it possible to watch contributions pages like other articles/pages? Thanks. --Zyma (talk) 07:20, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After reading WP:HOUND, it doesn't look like it. And no, I'm not following you around. I just happen to watch both this page and the template that we were discussing over the last few days. Dismas|(talk) 08:00, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I should discuss my question. I want to use this feature if WP has it. Because it's useful and I don't like to add many articles to my watchlist. For example, an user makes problematic changes to many articles. Instead of watching targeted articles, I want to watch his contributions (when he targets new articles and does not return to old targeted articles, it'll be much easier to review and verify his edits). I don't like to check his contributions page manually every time. A watchlist is better and more useful. --Zyma (talk) 09:35, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple user pages, all basically the same

While reverting a few non-sense edits, I found a user page for User:Zesttimids. Seeing as how their only edits were to add pointless links, I figured they wouldn't have a user page. But they do. The quality of the layout is far superior to most newbie editors though. I thought that maybe they had copy/pasted some other editors user page. So I did some checking and found that George Molsbarger was linked on their user page. When I checked what linked to the George Molsbarger article, I found a list of 30-40 other user pages. I haven't looked at them all but all that I have looked at are quite similar in layout and text. Most say something like "I'm John Doe. I have a PH.d in <insert science> and I like Music, watching Movies, and the George Molsbarger Foundation." Looking at the history on the George Molsbarger article, I see that it was created just a couple days ago and has had only two editors. Neither of which are on the What Links Here page of George Molsbarger. So, what is going on here? Is this part of some class at the George Molsbarger Foundation where all the students make very similar user pages? Dismas|(talk) 10:30, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Feels like a class. If adding pointless links was a crime they'd have shot most of us a while ago. I'm going to pick a few of the class members and check their contribs later (could be a daily class, could be a weekly one or anywhere in between). However the George Molsbarger article is junk. Five of the Six references on it are references copied from Foundation for Economic Education that don't even come close to applying. I believe that this is the same George Molsbarger.... http://www.fbi.gov/newyork/press-releases/2012/twenty-five-individuals-indicted-in-multi-million-dollar-illegal-nationwide-sports-betting-ring Naraht (talk) 11:05, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, the pattern here (and some other things in common which I won't mention here) tell me that this is a vandal creating sleeper autoconfirmed accounts. They will all be blocked. I also deleted George Molsbarger as a blatant hoax - note that the source cited in the article is a user-created PR release, and there is no evidence at all on Google that Mr. Molsbarger is a philanthropist. NawlinWiki (talk) 14:16, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Update - it's all a huge hoax. See this Facebook page, which includes a brag about vandalism to another Wikipedia page, Ronald M. George. NawlinWiki (talk) 14:26, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion without consideration

    Hello,

I am having issues communicating with one of the editors, Mr. RHaworth who keeps disregarding my messages and rushed to delete my article. As per Wiki's instructions, I have marked my article as Work in Progress and I quickly received a warning that it qualified for speedy deletion. I replied saying I was still working on it (as marked by the template) and not to please delete it. I have also asked for more clarification on why it was deemed promotional content. I then got the same message back with no additional explanation and I once again replied that I was still working on it (I hope you appreciate that the formatting guidelines are not that easy to follow and it actually takes a while to get everything formatted correctly). I just checked back as I wanted to go in and make my final amends and discovered that the page was deleted by RHaworth. I have tried to speak to him but quite frankly I am not sure how to do this and I've read his previous conversations with other people who have complained about similar issues and he seems very rude and offensive. He isn't helpful, he just replies to everyone in a very superior and rude tone implying that his decision is final and he's not providing any indication on what was done wrong.

Going back to my article on Hotels4u.com - this has been built following the content already published and live for LateRooms.com: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/LateRooms. I was given another warning of not trying to add spammy links but I cannot believe that the person has actually checked the references I listed! These are perfectly legit URLs and I am more than willing to remove some if someone can explain to me why they are deemed spammy. Having looked at the links used by Laterooms.com they look a lot spammier than the ones for Hotels4u.com and I actually wonder why they don't class as spam if mine are definitely spam!

I am asking for help because I want to create a legit page and it seems I have no chance given the editors reply with an ambiguous answer and delete my work before I can even finish writing it! Surely this is not a race against the clock, right? I still can't understand why a page marked as work in progress has been deleted like that!

    Please help?

    Jinxy11 (talk) 10:49, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest you read the message on your talk page, and then read WP:CSD#G11.--ukexpat (talk) 13:08, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jinxy11: You can create a draft article through articles for creation where we give much more leeway for development until a draft article is ready to go "live" by a move to the article mainspace. I can assure you though that it will be declined (as opposed to deleted) if it continues to contain corporate ad-speak like "... have developed into a market leader for selling beach-based products with strong and enduring relationships with the trade." It will also need reliable independent sources, which it appeared to have few of. Please note that your comparison of what you wrote to other pages (and this applies to linking as well) is not relevant. See WP:OTHERSTUFF. Indeed, though the deleted content was far more promotional than that in the article on LateRooms.com, that article looks like a good candidate for deletion as non-notable, at least based on the lack of independent sources cited (though they may exist and have not been used), and that article is tagged right now as being written like an advertisement and needing better sources.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:27, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure which situation you refer to. What did you do before being asked for the password? For example trying to log in, create an account, get a password reset, enable email from other users. If your email account outside Wikipedia has a password then you should not use that password at Wikipedia. If you have a username then it may clarify the situation to post it here. I had altered the way some film/TV series names appeared in an article on Gary Olsen; I highlighted them in blue as they had not been mentioned in the article earlier and they do have Wiki articles on them. It said clicking on these links now leads to disambiguation pages. I have tried to correct this, following the not very clear instructions on what to do to avoid this, but I don't think I have done it correctly. The notification mentions Party Party (in the list of films at the end of the article), Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and Prospects (these two in the body of the article), although I could not find anything wrong with the last link, as it led straight to the right Wiki page, not a disambiguation page. Could you please correct any mistakes I have made and tell me how to do this properly in future? --P123cat1 (talk) 14:40, 1 April 2014 (UTC)thi[reply]

If you use the link [[Gimme Gimme Gimme (TV series)|]] it will display as Gimme Gimme Gimme; this is known as the pipe trick. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:02, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
... and the link to the Prospects dab page was corrected by another editor earlier today. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:04, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have just found the pipe trick you refer to via one of the help links given in the notification, but only because I knew what I was looking for! It is sometimes quite a challenge to work one's way through the maze of information that is often thrown up by these Wiki help links - pages and pages of it, reached via strings of yet more links, going in all directions - to find the specific help you are looking for! --P123cat1 (talk) 19:07, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

P123cat1, that's true; but in the case of the pipe trick, it is only a short cut: if you don't know the pipe trick you can always manage it by using the full piped link: in this case [[Gimme Gimme Gimme (TV series)|Gimme Gimme Gimme]]. --ColinFine (talk) 10:50, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template reference on Magazine web page

We are editing the magazine wiki page to update and in the 25th Reference on this page: Moment (magazine)#Notable article subjects, The page does not link to the magazine. Instead, it opens with language that Wikipedia does not have a template for this exact name.

Is this something that is fixed upon review or do I need to do something else?

    Thank you.

    Referencing errors on Demonoid

Reference help requested. I edited the Demonoid entry and eliminated much unfounded rumor and speculation. In the process of doing so, I apparently caused broken links to citations that are no longer there, but was unable to eliminate them. Now there are error messages in the footnotes that I'm unable to correct. I've gone in and checked or corrected those citations I was able to find links to, but the others were vague or improperly done before I began the edit. I don't know if you can help, but I'm pretty much at sea here. Thanks, 99.73.91.2 (talk) 18:40, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It was fixed by a bot, here. Basically you had deleted two of the references. But they were used again in another section and called by name only. When the name didn't match up with any full reference, it threw the error. Dismas|(talk) 18:46, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    When Guidelines Collide

If there is a disagreement about whether or not two guidelines conflict and an RfC is posted to resolve the conflict, it may very well be that the answer will be different depending on which talk page is chosen to post the RfC. If I suspect that is the case, where would be a good neutral place to post the RfC? There would, of course be identical RfC announcements posted to the talk pages of the policies in question. --Guy Macon (talk) 06:51, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

why my edits have been deleted?

    Hi there,

I'm contacting you because few days ago I edited the realtime ridesharing page (Real-time ridesharing) including the name of the company I'm working for: Funryde. I really don't understand why it has been rejected given the fact I put other references than Funryde's website. I would like to understand how it works. There are so many pages on wiki which have one single external reference such as this one : Tapjoy (all other external references are actually their own). They just talk about one company and no references outside their own website and social media presence.

As we're starting to spread across the UK,I found it legitimate to be on realtime ridesharing page. Additionally, Funryde is real peer-to-peer ridesharing as passengers are covered and drivers are not making extra money. They only offset their car expenses.

This is the reason why, I would like to gain a better understanding of how it works and what to do for the future.

    Many thanks,

    Best,

Astrid — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tridou (talkcontribs) 10:04, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Second, your edits were promotional in nature - Wikipedia is not another advertising outlet or web presence for your company, see WP:SPAM.--ukexpat (talk) 15:07, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    How to contest speedy deletion

    Hi,

I created a fairly objective and concise content about a company backed with references. However the entire post got deleted under Speedy Deletion clause with A7 being cited. I understand that Wikipedia has concerns regarding the 'importance' or 'significance' of the subject. How do I make efforts to restore the content with due regard to objectivity and in full accordance with Wikipedia rules?

    Maddytechie (talk) 11:01, 2 April 2014 (UTC) Maddy[reply]

Hello, Maddytechie. The page you want is Deletion review. However, please be aware that neither "importance" nor "significance" is a concern of Wikipedia. What we are concerned with is "notability", which in normal parlance means the same as the other two words, but in Wikipedia has a special sense: whether the subject has been written about at length by multiple reliable sources independent of the subject. If a subject is "important" or "significant", then it will probably at some time meet the criteria for notability, but it may not do so yet; conversely, a subject can be notable in Wikipedia's sense without being especially "important". (I am talking in general terms - I don't know what company you're referring to or whether it meets the criteria). --ColinFine (talk) 11:10, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, indications of "importance or significance" expressly are sufficient to avoid speedy deletion, but they would not be sufficient to avoid deletion per a more detailed WP:AFD discussion.--ukexpat (talk) 15:11, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

But to answer your question, when the conditions identified by the tags have been addressed, the tags can be removed. In this case, the addition of reliably published third party sources that discuss the subject in a significant manner would address both the "notability" and the "reliable sources" issues that have been flagged. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:02, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    The Hall School

There is a Wiki article for The Hall School in Hampstead, but the title of that article is Hall School (Hampstead), i.e. omitting the definite article. I cannot see on the editing page where to correct this, but even if I could, there would be enormous repercussions. This prominent school is referred to in very many articles using its correct name - The Hall School - with disambiguation links to the article on the school, so if the title of the article on the school is altered to give its correct name, all the disambiguation links in articles where the school is mentioned would have to be altered! Could that be done globally? --P123cat1 (talk) 16:10, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MOVE discusses how to move pages. I'm not an expert at this, but my understanding is that if this move were undertaken then a redirect would be created at the original article name, and consequently the links would still function, though ideally they would be updated (manually) as well, though this isn't necessary. That said, you may want to wait for an editor more familiar with page moves to chime in. DonIago (talk) 16:24, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My reading of Wikipedia:MOS#Article titles is that the article title would not start with the definite article. Note also that Hall School exists as a disambiguation page. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:36, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As you dig down to more exact policy/guidelines, you end up at WP:NCTHE.Naraht (talk) 17:17, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
...which seems to be applied inconsistently for school names - The Manchester Grammar School (proper name) redirects to Manchester Grammar School, whereas The Academy School exists at that title without a redirect. I am sure there are other examples with and without the definite article.--ukexpat (talk) 19:14, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tips. I am very new to Wiki editing and fear I might make a pig's breakfast of any attempt I made to straighten things out! I couldn't even find the disambiguation page for this school, though I did try hard. Also, there seems to be some ambiguity about the rules on this, so I had better leave it for the time being. --P123cat1 (talk) 19:43, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

question about merging to a unified Wikimedia login on a very old account

Hi, I was thinking of finally merging my accounts with a unified Wikimedia login, as is written about here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Unified_login

However, I have a really old user id (like <100, from early 2002) and I really don't want to lose it. Will merging to a unified login reset my user id?

Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 41#Unified login - User ID from 2008 says you will keep your User ID at each wiki where you are already registered. You get a global User ID but that is not shown in preferences. Special:CentralAuth/PrimeHunter says mine is 1836852. As http://wiki.riteme.site/w/api.php?action=query&list=allusers&aufrom=PrimeHunter&aulimit=1 says, my English Wikipedia User ID is 551300 (I agree yours is very low). I see 551300 at Special:Preferences and have other numbers at other wikis. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:57, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't think there might me a problem, as user id is a unique identifier. Each wiki has its own user id for a particular user. This tool also generates user ids among other things. Try asking a developer on this IRC channel

Question regarding the citation of a Gandhi quote

I am writing a research paper in APA format and require the year in which Gandhi said,

"“It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.”

    Minor spelling error, correction of

On page 7 of the Wikipedia article on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Blue Ridge Parkway), the section on Partners lists Eastern National as "the principle provider" of certain goods and services. I believe the article's author meant "the pricipal provider". A minor error, but we computer programmers are a fussy lot; and we ex-programmers are virtually impossible to live with.

WP:SOFIXIT, as I have just done. However, that section is very promotional (as it says, "[m]uch of this information comes from the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation's Partners page") and needs to be toned down. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 20:10, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    World War 2 images

    Hello--

I just received some pics. my dad took in WWII. I believe I am looking at the USS Saratoga in dry dock after being being hit by a 5th suicide plane. According to my dad"s diary, the part he was on was toed to was Guam. Too many ships with too many dead and injured took precedence of the Saratoga The Saratoga was finally supported out to Pearl Harbor were it was finally fixed, but sadly finished.

Yes I have pictures, a day to day diary.

Hello, Judith. It's not clear why you are telling us this: are you suggesting that one of these picture would enhance the article USS Saratoga (CV-3)? If your father took the pictures, then you are probably the copyright owner (though you should make sure of that) and you can donate them to Wikipedia (or preferably to Wikimedia Commons) by following the procedure in Donating copyright materials. Then once you have uploaded them, they can be used in the article. --ColinFine (talk) 22:58, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia can generally only accept images which have been released under a free license or meet some other specific requirements (see Wikipedia:Image use policy#Copyright and licensing). If the images are not your own work, then we need proof that the copyright owner (your father) is willing to release them under such a license. That proof should be sent to the E-Mail address specified at Commons:OTRS. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 23:12, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Works created by a US government employee (including members of the armed forces) in the course of their duties are in the public domain. Don't know if that applies to your dad's pictures. Jc3s5h (talk) 23:19, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but unless we have a proof that the work is indeed free because of the above arguments, we assume it is non-free. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 23:35, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Federico Mauro

    Long, homework type question

This man is famous in the photography field. I cam here for additional information to see if he has passed away and so on but he is not listed and there is not much information out about him yet I need it for college :/ (I’m freaking out!)

I have a litttttle information but I’m still bugging!!! xo upset

decided to have myself mostly focus on “a famous shoe photographer” just to view if there were ever any jobs available, in this field. One of my personal reasons behind doing so, is because my older brother works in New York City at a store which sells name brand shoes. He always brought home purchased heals that were just simply ‘sample size’ {d}. Luckily, they fit my feet perfect and comfortably! After I did this search, Federico Mauro showed up right along with his page as well as information about him and his series being “Famous Hats, Famous Guns, Famous Eyeglasses, Famous Blades, Famous Food & Drinks “ and the last category 10 Most Famous Shoes By Federico Mauro”. I found information on him on the website http://www.themost10.com/famous-shoes-by-federico-mauro/. I also found a common quote that states something close to a quote located on his a webpage, being “They say you can’t really know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes”… yet it then continues on to state how he’s a famous “Italian Art Director & Multimedia Designer Federico Mauro has made it much simpler to do that by identifying the shoes that famous people wear. Using both celebrities and the characters they play, he pinpointed the shoes most commonly associated with each in a minimalist design. From Dorothy Gale’s elegant ruby red slippers to Jeff Lebowski’s Birkenstocks and Kurt Cobain’s Converse All Stars, Mauro searched the world wide web for the perfect fit. Check your pop culture expertise by seeing how many famous names you can recall by the shoes on their feet.” I’m not saying it is right to judge anyone by their shoes, because we never know the obstacles each person faces in one day!

Instantly I decided to figure out plenty of more information about this man, where I noticed how, ever since 2001, he chose to become a professional multimedia designer and art director. Actually, to be precise, in the year 2004, he specifically chose to major in Communicational Science. The reason behind so, was due to him having an experimental dissertation from the topic being Horror cinema. While he was in his own years of college, he got in touch with an Italian movie director named, Ferzan Ozpetek. By working together, they established an important and solid collaboration, which overall, he personally took care of movies’ web communication. Without including his web designing experience, he committed to the production of realizations to many Videos, Photography and multimedia projects while also realizing showing short movies awarded in national competitions; random and spontaneously! Over the years he has increasingly been working on communicational projects, social media strategies, online media, viral and unconventional marketing for quite a few clients. Not that I honestly know them all, but here are the examples I found, Fandango, Rai Cinema, 01 Distribution, Nanni Moretti, Independet Ideas, Medusa, Mondadori, Alex Britti, Sandro Veronesi, R&C Produzioni, Richard Cocco Strings, Nastro Azzurro, and Einaudi. After he worked on this creation, he received different awards while his work has been reported on International Design portals including NewwebPick, Xhilarate, CoolHompeges, and Pixelmakers. Besides taking part in so, articles and mentions on his work have also been reported. They were especially found within plenty of well known International magazines, such as The Guardian, Wired, Web Design Index and on the most important Italian newspapers, being La Repubblica, Corriere della Sera, Il Mattino, Il Sole 24 Ore, Il Giornale, SkyTg24, TgCom, Libero. Federico Mauro also teaches Web Design and Communication for professional formation courses for the EU at the Io-School.

Not only did he take pictures for movie advertising, he had numbers of series which consisted of individual topics being shoes, hats, eyeglasses, guns, other utougtol*** that held meaning such as guitars for example blades as well as the combination between pistols and guns.

Once he left his famous eyeglasses series impression, the Italian based designer Federico Mauro introduced us to his Famous Shoes collection. Since he had previous series, Mauro used recognizable eyewear from celebrities, and he used the same concept by using shoes instead. The collection sees shoes from fictional movie characters one through ten being Forrest Gump, Al Capone, Michael Jackson, Wonder Woman, Frankenstein, Beatrix Kiddo, then Dorothy Gale as seventh, eighth remains Steve Jobs, Clint Eastwood as ninth, and tenth or in last is Audrey Hepburn. Federico Mauro is a a professional multimedia designer and art director who is behind this fun project called ‘’Famous Shoes’’. Iconic shoes of famous people and beloved fictional characters showcased in a series of posters. Since i am a big fan of Forrest Gump

Jimmy "Brave Sky" Johnson was active on the independent wrestling scene in North Carolina, from 1998-2004, as a talent, but also in an official/referee capacity. Brave Sky withdrew from active competition in early 2004. However, he has gotten offers to return to the squared circle, but continues to decline. During his time in the sport, he was very fan friendly, in spite of being a heel (a bad guy in front of the camera).<ref>ACW ALumni</ref> — Preceding unsigned comment added by LifeChallenges (talkcontribs) 02:48, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

pywikipediabott deletion of wikipedia listing for Michael T. Lynch (automotive)

I just noticed a listing for Michael T. Lynch was deleted from Wikipedia at 5:00 pm. on February 27, 2014 by a pywikipediabot named Kasper's bot. I believe this is a mistake and that Mr. Lynch's page should be reinstated. Mr. Lynch is considered one of the foremost experts, if not the foremost expert in the world on vintage race cars and vintage car racing. In vintage car circles this is like deleting Albert Einstein from a theoretical physics listing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paxtonbro (talkcontribs) 04:15, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to be the article which is being referenced here - Michael T. Lynch. Also, the respective AfD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael T. Lynch. Connormah (talk) 04:20, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yup - See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael T. Lynch. We need evidence from third party published reliable sources that a person meets our notability guidelines. Testimonials from contributors don't count. AndyTheGrump (talk) 04:22, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I see what the problem is. You're are looking for third-party articles about Mr. Lynch as opposed to articles written by him. I'll see if I can find some, but I somewhat disagree that the Wikipedia notability guidelines universally fits all fields. Check with any vintage race car dealer or enthusiast in the United States and you'll be made aware of Mr. Lynch's notability. Perhaps you can recommend on how I might proceed. Would it be appropriate for me to contact Mr. Lynch personally?... or would a testament from a wiki-recognized notable person from that field, ie. Carroll Shelby for instance. Many thanks for you input and advice. Paxtonbro — Preceding undated comment added 06:21, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As has already been made clear, the criteria by which Wikipedia determines notability relate exclusively to published material - personal testimony isn't acceptable. AndyTheGrump (talk) 06:30, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.9 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:49, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Create some redirects

User:82.205.95.188 just removed some sections from WP:AFC/R. [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. This edit shows that he/she wasn't simply clerking the page. Please create redirects for any of the removed requests that deserve to be created. 2001:18E8:2:28CA:F000:0:0:CB89 (talk) 14:02, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Need help for editing a svg map

Hi all, I need help for editing File:Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Dioceses.svg which is derived from Derived from File:Hong Kong 18 Districts Blank Map.svg. Could any help me (or give me some hint on how to) erase the white lines within each colour? The white lines are boundaries of political districts of Hong Kong but not of ecclesiastical dioceses of Hong Kong, so I want each of the green, red and blue areas to be continuous. I am lost with Inkscape. How can I do so? Thanks --Hailpeace (talk) 14:55, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Please ask at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop.--ukexpat (talk) 16:56, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can I access all wiki pages containing a specified keyword by some internal search mechanism?Thank you in advance for answering. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.15.215.83 (talk) 15:53, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. If you type the word antidisestablishmentarianismist into the search box at the top right hand corner of any page, you will get this result. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:01, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
However, if your search term is an article (or redirect) entering it in the search box in the upper right will bring you directly to the article, which is not what you want. For example, entering "foo" will bring you to Foobar.
If you want all articles containing the word "foo" first click on the magnifying glass in the search box, then you will be brought to a search page. Now enter "foo" and you should get a page with all instances of "foo".--S Philbrick(Talk) 19:51, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Or after editing foo, from the suggestions list of the searchbox, select: "Containing: foo" —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:10, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Opting in to the edit counter Wiki

I am trying to opt myself in to the edit counter, where it will show monthly edit counts and top pages edited. It says to create this: User:IPadPerson/EditCounterOptIn.js on my local Wiki, but I am not sure where on Wikipedia should I do it.--IPadPerson (talk) 16:00, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Does the redlink User:IPadPerson/EditCounterOptIn.js give you an option to create it? --David Biddulph (talk) 16:04, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    I believe so.--IPadPerson (talk) 17:20, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Blank or almost blank pages and G13

Dear editors: Because there are so many inexperienced editors who submit pages to AfC, we get a lot of blank pages. These are declined and about half the time the submitter adds content and resubmits. Sometimes, though, the page just stays blank, and after six months is eligible to be deleted under db-g13. This doesn't seem right to me, though, because someone may see this and, thinking that there is content there that could be improved, ask for a "G13 refund", leading to disappointment and wasted admin time. If I come across such blank pages, is it appropriate to delete them as test pages instead? —Anne Delong (talk) 18:00, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do they count as "article" pages? Wikipedia:SPEEDY#A3._No_content; otherwise Wikipedia:SPEEDY#G7._Author_requests_deletion might work as well. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:10, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, only the general criteria are applicable, so A3 isn't available. If a page hasn't had content, can it be said to have been "blanked"? I could use G6 housekeeping, but I was hoping to find one where I wouldn't have to write an explanation. —Anne Delong (talk) 18:40, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PO - a word developed by Edward de Bono in the early 70's

    Greetings:

my interest is having a Wiki on the word PO. Its history, and its functionality as a Peace Opportunity.

IMHO the use of the word changes the yes/no paradigm and increases communication between people. I have used it in teaching English as a Second language with great results, and as c philosophy to explore holistic thinking as opposed to reductionist thinking. As a learning tool it may assist in developing holistic thinking models. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mitchellgold (talkcontribs) 19:17, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have significant content about the word, (its history, its usage, its impact etc) that has been published by reliable third party sources? If not, Wikipedia is not the right place. If you do, then I would suggest working via the articles for creation process where experienced editors will help you develop content for an article that will meet basic requirements and not be subject to immediate deletion.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:20, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Vector font

    Hello all,

I logged in today and found that the font for Vector (not Monobook, Modern, etc) has become some horrible manky serif face. It looks terrible in Chrome on Windows 7, and I have no idea why serifs are needed for on-screen reading anyway. Is this something specific to my PC or is it a change I haven't seen the rationale for? Cheers, Brammers (talk/c) 19:24, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, this was a Mediawiki change; more information can be found here. Writ Keeper  19:29, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm using Firefox on Windows XP and the "f"s on Wikipedia articles are all in bold (both lower-case and capital). I checked it on Internet Explorer and it doesn't have the same problem. Is there a way to fix it? David O. Johnson (talk) 20:19, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
