Webnode (/ˈwɛbnd/) is a cloud-based online website builder system.[2] The product is aimed at individuals and small businesses with solutions for websites and e-commerce.[3]

The website builder is known for its simplicity and allows users to create a website by choosing a pre-built template and dragging and dropping elements such as blogs, photo galleries, forms and much more.[4]

The system is offered under the Freemium business model having a free offer with limitations, and the possibility to upgrade to Premium packages which offer more storage space, higher bandwidth and extra features.[5]

History

[edit]

Westcom, s.r.o. (later Webnode CZ s.r.o.), a company based in Brno, Czech Republic, started development of Webnode in September 2006 and officially launched the first version just 16 months later, in January 2008.[1]

Originally since 2002, the developer company Westcom had created online applications for large customers and had developed a system they could use for making it easier for programmers to launch and create new websites. From this framework system came the idea of creating a website builder tool for non-technical users.[6]

First the Czech version was launched and then the Slovak one became operational in early June. By the end of 2008 Webnode had more than 200,000 users in more than 80 countries around the world. Two years later, in 2010, its user base raised to more than 2,000,000 users and it had 12 language versions available.[7]

Since the fast growth, after few years the original architecture of CMS was no longer sufficient, and developers were working on a new solution. Soon, the first version of the website builder was followed by the launch of Webnode 2.0 in September, 2015. That meant a huge upgrade of features and modernization of design, as well.[8]

As of November 2024, the Webnode 2.0 webbuilder is available in 23 language versions.[9]

Since 2020 Webnode has been the part of team.blue, a leading digital service provider headquartered in Gent, Belgium.[10]

Features

[edit]

For using the product there is no installation needed. After registration users can create and manage their websites in an online editor, also from their mobile devices.[11] In some localizations an AI-driven wizard and AI migration tool can be used for a smoother website creation.[12]

There are many features available either in free or premium version, such as multiple language feature, security services, website and e-shop stats, etc.[13] Customers can also integrate third-party applications into their own websites, such as reservation systems, analytic services, social media features, etc.[14]

The company offers the option of domain registration and email services.[15]

Webnode is often criticized about the limitations in customization, what makes it not suitable for customers with special concepts or custom needs.[16]

The company offers multi-language customer support, that is rated 4.5 stars by users on Capterra as of July 2024.[17]
