von Holzhausen is a textile material innovation company based in Los Angeles, California.[1] The company uses plants, recycled fibers, and biodegradable materials to create sustainable materials at scale.[2]
History[edit]
von Holzhausen was founded in Malibu in 2015 by former automotive designer Vicki von Holzhausen, spouse of Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen.[3]
The company began by developing materials for handbags and other accessories. Today[update] it supplies plant-based textiles to a variety of industries including fashion, furniture, aerospace, and automotive.[3]
Products[edit]
The company's technologies range from plant-based leather alternatives to biodegradable topcoats.[4] Notable developments include Liquidplant, a 100 percent plant-based performance topcoat that replaces petroleum versions,[3] and a biodegradation technology that allows materials to break down in a landfill condition.[5]
The company has five commercially available products including Technik, Banbū, Struktur, Liquidplant, and Replant.[3] It also offers its own line of accessories.
Collaborations[edit]
The company has partnered with corporations such as Apple to create product ranges sold worldwide,[5] and Spanish automaker Cupra to create a custom interior for a show car, which debuted at the IAA Mobility show in 2023.[3]
In 2022, von Holzhausen announced a partnership with Nanollose, to develop a leather alternative made from microbial cellulose.[6] The same year, von Holzhausen worked with Unplugged Performance to create a Tesla Model S Plaid with animal-free upholstery for The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.[7] They have also partnered with French brand Lola James Harper to create a candle inspired by their material Banbū.[8]
Awards[edit]
von Holzhausen has been recognized in the SEAL Business Sustainability Awards,[9] Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas,[10] Innovation by Design Awards,[11] INC's Female Founder Awards,[12] and Core77 Design Awards.[13]
