Vijay Jagirdar, AC was posthumously awarded India's highest peacetime gallantry award the Ashoka Chakra for his exemplary bravery to save his neighbour's family from 1984 anti Sikh riots in Indore.[1]

Vijay Jagirdar was a resident of Jamuna Nagar, Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Riot

Following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984, servel mob started 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The riots became violent in all over India.[2] On the evening of 1st November, 1984, a mob of about 150 people attacked the house of Balbir Singh, who the neighbour of Jagirdar.[3] The ferocious mob was on killing Balbir Singh and his family. They were armed with knives and sticks.[4] During the violence, Vijay Jagirdar's family lived opposite Lalbagh Palace. When the riots broke out, Jagirdar gave shelter to the Sikh family. After seeing the delicacy of the situation, Jagirdar came forward in front of the mob.[5] He requested the mob not to attack the innocent Balbir Singh and his family members.[6] But the mob did not listen to him. The mob injured Jagirdar, when he tried to forcefully stop the people from going towards Balbir Singh's house. Jagirdar was beaten severely and he fell unconscious. He was taken to the hospital. Though he succumbed to his injuries within half an hour due to serious injuries.[7]

Ashoka Chakra awardee

Thus Vijay Jagirdar sacrificed his own life in saving his neighbour's family from a ferocious mob without thinking his own safety. He was awarded posthumously Ashoka Chakra.[8]
