Vangjel Tavo (Greek: Βαγγέλης Τάβος; 17 December 1969) is an Albanian politician who was elected mayor of Himarë on the repeat elections on 4 August 2024. Tavo was member of the Assembly of the Republic of Albania for the Socialist Movement for Integration and served as the Minister of Health from 2012 to 2013, replacing Petrit Vasili.[2]
Biography
[edit]Tavo is an ethnic Greek,[3][4] born on 17 December 1969 in Jorgucat, a village in Gjirokastër County.[5][6][7] He has both Albanian and Greek citizenship.[8] He studied medicine, and is specialized in gynecology.[6][7]

Tavo was first in the Socialist Party of Albania but left for joining the Socialist Movement for Integration.[9]
Tavo started his political career in 1996 when he, representing the Socialist Party of Albania, won the elections in Gjirokastra for the first time for his Party for after a very long time. But because a problem in the country he only entered the parliament in 1997. After that, until 2010, he was an MP of Albania being part of the Socialist Party. In this year he changed his Party and joined LSI which is another political party. Sometime later he became the Vice Speaker of the House. He replaced Petrit Vasili and became the Minister of Health for a short period of time.
In 2024, Tavo accepted the invitation of the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama for running in the repeat local elections for the municipality of Himarë with the support of the Socialist Party of Albania, and won his opponent, Petro Gjikuria, who was supported by the opposition.[3]
