Your new article Bishop Airport (Texas)

[edit]

Dear Zyxw, it was good of you to create the new article Bishop Airport (Texas). This article looks very well put together. The information is presented clearly and is easy to understand. Wikipedia’s come a long way since it started, so thank you. Let me know if I can be of any help and I’ll do my best! Jipinghe (talk) 20:26, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Buffalo Municipal Airport (Missouri), and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.airports-worldwide.com/usa/minnesota/buffalo_municipal_minnesota.php.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. I removed this automated tag from the article -- all content in the article comes directly from public domain Federal Aviation Administration data, which was already referenced in article. -- Zyxw (talk) 14:57, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Click on that external link and you will see this message: "The above content comes from Wikipedia and is published under free licenses." Hi, just for future reference, if you hadn't realised, the bot is picking up on the identical language you're using for these articles via Wikipedia mirrors. Assuming you wrote the original text, that's fine. If someone else did, you can attribute it in edit summaries (see WP:CWW). If you don't mind, it would be really helpful if you could mention in the initial edit summary that you are using text from other articles, even if it's your own. The bot seems to be flagging a few of these up, and they everything flagged by the bot gets checked manually. I know it's a bit of extra effort, but it would really help us out at Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations if we can immediately see that there's no copyright infringement, and why. I was searching the FAA references, but couldn't work out where you'd got the text from! Thanks, --BelovedFreak 18:28, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Template:Location map USA2

[edit]

I noticed your edit to {{Location map USA2}}. Your method will work but don't forget the relief parameter can be used as well to display image 1. I think that the easiest way for a user to display a relief map is to use {{Location map USA relief}} which you mentioned in the "See also" section. Also, I'm going to be categorizing the relief map templates in Category:Location map by country templates or one of its subcategories. I noticed that Location map USA2 is in Category:Location map by country templates and in Category:United States location map templates. I think it just need to be in the latter category since it is a subcategory of the former. I didn't check to see how it happened but I'll fix it. –droll [chat] 07:49, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe I wrong about the category thing. What do you think? –droll [chat] 08:07, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated the brief "how to" at {{Location map USA2}} to include mention of the relief parameter and a pointer to the documentation at Template:Location map#Relief. I believe that Category:Location map by country templates is the proper category for a location map templates showing an entire country, while subcategories such as Category:United States location map templates are for maps showing a smaller area such as a state. As for {{Location map USA relief}}, there is a separate Category:Location relief map by country templates that contains all templates showing an entire country where the primary image is a relief map. -- Zyxw (talk) 08:14, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info on country templates belonging in Category:Location map by country templates. I'll revert those edits. I realize that there is a separate category for relief map templates but I don't think that should exclude them from Category:Location map by country templates or one of its subcategories. –droll [chat] 08:24, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Location maps

Please stop your experiments! --Obersachse (talk) 09:52, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you could be more specific regarding your concern. Based on the title, I presume you are referring to edits I have made to various country location maps. I have been adding missing alternative maps via the image1 and image2 parameters and adding documentation. None of these changes should have affected any existing map that is displayed via these templates. If they have caused any problems please let me know. -- Zyxw (talk) 10:04, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Original Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded in recognition of the thankless task of updating all the stillborn DRC provinces of 2005 with their present, non-existent, status. Well done !! Buckshot06 (talk) 23:47, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the barnstar. Editing the articles for the provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was actually the easy part. The larger task is to update all of the cities and towns in the DRC (e.g. Lubumbashi) that refer to those still non-existent provinces. A related task would be to update the subcategories of Category:Populated places in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (e.g. Category:Populated places in Haut-Katanga Province). -- Zyxw (talk) 17:13, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Location map documentation

[edit]

I've been thinking about the best way to display the documentation for Location map templates. I have two ideas and would appreciate your comments.

  1. I have a proposed version of {{Location map/Info}} that will allow it to be transcluded directly in documentation sub-pages. You can see my request to edit the protected template here. You can see an example here.
  2. I have written a template that will display {{Location map/Info}} and the documentation sub-page on the Location map template page. You can see an example of the output here. A drawback of this approach is that the edit and purge link at the top of the page are absent.

I'll cleanup the example pages when a consensus is reached about which of these should be kept. We should probably discuss this at Template talk:Location map and I should probably copy these comments to that page but I have to go out just now. Best wishes. –droll [chat] 00:40, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I agree that your first option was the best solution, where {{Location map/Info}} now uses {{BASEPAGENAME}} so it can be transcluded in the /doc subpage. That is better than your second option, which would have introduced a non-standard format for transcluding the documentation. I think it best to stick with the standard {{Documentation}} template for that. -- Zyxw (talk) 14:14, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About the documentation for Location map

[edit]

Thanks for your work on the documentation for {{Location map}}. I think you did some good work. I pared the page some. There was information that was interesting but might just confuse the first time user (IMHO). I like the idea of using sub-pages to further expand on the information and I moved some stuff to Template:Location map/Creating a new map template and added a bit. As to how the formulas of x and y are derived, I am mostly mystified. In the little bit I added about the subject, I evaded the issue.

You might notice that I eliminated the word "skew." I don't know where that concept came form but I don't think it is commonly used by cartographers. I think its better to talk about calculating pixel coordinates or using a transforms. Not that I'm an expert on the subject. The template {{Location map skew}} was only transcluded in a very small number of articles the last time I checked. It was an important step in the evolution of mapping templates but I think it should be mostly ignored. There are a few other templates that fall into the same category.

Its my opinion that the documentation for {{Location map}} should be more comprehensive than {{Location map+}} and {{Location map many}} and thanks to your effort it is on its way. I rewrote the documentation for those two templates but got distracted before tackling {{Location map}}. Of course the doc pages for the {{Location map+}} and {{Location map many}} should be complete but perhaps they can refer to sub-pages or Location map for more details. Excuse my rambling here. Best wishes. –droll [chat] 07:08, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments. -- Zyxw (talk) 17:19, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
