Change to page format

[edit]

Hi Zns, thank you for your message about inadvertently changing a page's format. Could you please tell me which page you are referring to so that I can have a look.

I've already looked at the Amsterdam article, and that seems OK to me.

Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 22:34, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reference on Bristol

[edit]

Hi, Thanks for your edits to Bristol. I have added some wikilinks. I see you have added a reference using the "cite web" template - which gives the impression this is from a web site but you have not included the URL for the page concerned. I have searched on the anti-slavery website but can't find the page concerned. If it is a website could you give the URL for the page - if it is a book or other source a different citation template should be used. If you need help let me know.— Rod talk 17:01, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the detail you have added may be more appropriate on Bristol slave trade as the main Bristol article only provides a summary.— Rod talk 17:31, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you have a look at Template:Cite web it has a parameter |url= this should be added with the http://... address of the relevant page; however having looked at the url you gave it appears you have directly copied the text, related to the Merchant Ventruers, which is a Copyright violation therefore I will need to remove it. You need to reword the text so that we do not break copyright law. I would suggest all the stuff about banks etc which is not directly related to Bristol shouldn't be on that page.— Rod talk 20:30, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm finding I'm having to remove more an more of the text you put on the Bristol page as copyright violoations - you can not just copy & paste text from other web sites into wikipedia - it is illegal.— Rod talk 21:05, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know that I've marked this page for deletion, as it seems to have been created in error - if you want to edit your sandbox, just edit the page at User:Zns Smith/sandbox. I have moved the content across for you. --McGeddon (talk) 19:50, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There's no problem, your sandbox just seemed to have been created at the wrong page, for some reason. I've moved it to User:Zns Smith/sandbox, and you are welcome to edit it there. --McGeddon (talk) 20:43, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

January 2013

[edit]

Hello Zns Smith, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied without attribution. If you want to copy from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Rod mentioned this to you, so perhaps the text above may help you understand why you cannot simply copy/paste text from other works be they books or the Internet. In response to your feedback

[edit]

Sometimes that happens. I wish it didn't.

I am about to block you

[edit]

You are continuing to add copyright violations. If you continue, and if you don't immediately revert the others, I will have to block you to enforce our policy on copyright. Also please read WP:Close paraphrase. I may not see your edits for another 2 hours or so, but if you don't comply I shall have no other course. I really don't want to sound as though I'm being rough, but you've had enough warnings and have ignored them. Dougweller (talk) 17:21, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for violating copyright policy by copying text or images into Wikipedia from another source without verifying permission. You have been previously warned that this is against policy, but have persisted.

Please take this opportunity to be sure you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to use non-free content. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.   Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:32, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
