Better version of a photograph
[edit]I decided to replace sb's photograph with my own which is of a better quality. I have even created an account for that purpose. Sadly as it turns out - I cannot do that. I read like 10s of help pages here but couldn't find a solution. Finally I was redirected http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Help_desk#Revising_images where one can find lots of requests to replace/delete/overwrite other images. Sadly, again, I cannot post there my request. This is higly confusing and frustrating not to say discouraging. Nevertheless if someone is reading this, please add Image:AztecSerpent2.JPG as a newer version of Image:AztecSerpent.JPG and please tell me what have I exactly done wrong. - The rules concerning images are frustrating, I know. Unfortunately, images cannot simply be replaced or renamed. I have changed the link to the image in the article (Aztec) that uses it. Now that there are two images, the first image might qualify for speedy deletion under CSD I1, but I'll have to review the policies first and I'll get back to you. - Hm, CSD I1 refers only to truly redundant (i.e., identical) images. But the article in question (which is the only article to use AztecSerpent.jpg other than the user page of its creator) now uses the beautiful picture you submitted. -- Merope 02:28, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- So, Z-m-k, do you have any more photos like this?? Our Mesoamerican pages can always use good, clear, focused images like the one you provided.
- Also, how did you get such a clear, focused image?? I myself would like to take similar photos, and it certainly seems like you know what you're doing!

- Ok but there has to be a way to add a newer version to a picture page. Take Image:Mslogohistorical.png as an example. There is like a dozen of different versions. And I could swear that I read somewhere in the help (although it wasn't helpful) that by uploading an image with the same dest. name I should add a newer version of it. What I did get while trying that was an error message.
- You're right, there is. Maybe it wouldn't let you do it since you're a very new user, but I've replaced the old file with the new one (and will go and change the path on Aztec. I'm sorry I wasn't more helpful--I'm still learning, too! -- Merope 03:27, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

- And, for the record, I got an error message, too, but then there were two buttons: one that basically said, "Ignore the warning and save over the image" and one that said "Cancel". So maybe you just read the error message and stopped there? I completely understand your frustration--I find images in particular to be the most confusing aspect of WP. - As far as 'taking such pictures' is concerned you have to forget about flash. This means also you need to keep your camera steady for a relatively long period of time (up to 1s, or very rarely up to 2s). Ideally you could press your lens against the glass but sometimes the thing you want to take picture of is too close and you have to avoid handshake like I tried in this picture's case. And yes I do have more pictures like this (but not that much, since British Museum is rather about Mummies than anything else) and I'll try to add them as soon as I get through all this help pages. Thanks for the Aztec mask photo. Yes, we do have a similar photo. Yours is certainly more in focus and I have added it to the Xiuhtecuhtli article. Any more? : ) Madman 22:02, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
