Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/John Boultbee (Artist)

You have rightly indicated that this article contained material that may have infringed copyright. I have amended, and continue to amend, the article. What is my next step to have it re-appraised? Pgboultbee (talk) 02:42, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Assuming you're talking about the article currently in your sandbox, you need to start by doing a heck of a lot more amending. A substantial amount of the text is still directly copied from the Blackbrook gallery profile - Wikipedia cannot legally host copyrighted material from other sites, including close paraphrasing, for any length of time. I've therefore removed the sentences which were clear copyright violations. Yunshui  07:24, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Re:Unsalted!

Thanks a lot I have done a copy paste move since all my sandbox history got included there! Thanks again!--Tito Dutta 13:09, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Please help to move the talk page to the correct destination! I have messed up things and undone my own edits! --Tito Dutta 13:21, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
No worries, I already spotted that and sorted it. I've basically created the talkpage again from scratch, so your original request for assistance is now somewhat lost (it's at the rather amusingly titled User talk:Talk:Soham Chakraborty; I can delete it, copy it to the article talk page or shift it to your sandbox talkpage; depends what you'd prefer. Yunshui  13:26, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, sir! That's the problem! You can copy to article talk page, but talk history should be merged too (that means, I request, you replied) etc. Or do whatever you like (move to article's talk page) etc! {[Smiley}} --Tito Dutta 13:28, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Tea House

I have started giving a few replies at Tea house. But, I feel that my replies are no way comparable to high standards that you guys maintain at the tea house in terms of humbleness of the answer. Especially, I feel bad that this not so humble reply of mine preceded the fantastic two replies that followed. --Anbu121 (talk me) 10:34, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Anbu121. It's great that you're helping out new editors at the Teahouse! Your reply was perfectly correct: the questioner was proposing to use original research and it was a good idea to point this out. The only thing I'd suggest is that you try to make your answers a little bit less terse (I'm guessing English isn't your first language?) - the Teahouse is supposed to be the friendly face of Wikipedia, so we try to avoid simply saying "You can't do that because of <insert random string of capital letters linked to a policy here> policy." (Not that your reply was anything like as bad as that!)
Please do carry on helping to answer questions at the Teahouse; the very fact that you're concerned that you might not be being welcoming enough suggests that you're an ideal host to have there. Just try to remember that new editors are often hugely confused, and may need a bit of hand-holding - you need to explain a bit, rather than just pointing to the relevent policies. Yunshui  10:44, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the tips. I feel very comfortable replying at the Help desk, because the questions that come there are a bit different. --Anbu121 (talk me) 11:03, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Requesting protection for Queen article

Hi Yunshui. Requesting page protection for Queen. Since the page became unprotected recently almost all edits by ip users have been reverted. In terms of views the article is very busy and has a history of vandalized edits. Cheers. Chie one (talk) 17:33, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

I would really like to be adopted! By You!

I saw your comment on my page. I have deeply considered my current opitons and my answer is this: Yes, please please please. PS. What is your natural language? Spacecasetheman (talk) 22:00, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Spacecasetheman, welcome aboard. My mother tongue is English - I have a minimal smattering of Japanese and French, but that's about it as far as my languages go. More on your talkpage. Yunshui  07:04, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Rollback

I saw that you seem to be into rollback, vandalism revertion, etc. Would you mind telling what I could do to improve my chances of getting rollback? I already have used Twinkle for some time to fight vandals, so I know pretty well what is and is not vandalism. Thanks! gwickwire | Leave a message 22:47, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Having taken a look at your contributions, I see no reason not to give you the rollback right - so I have. Your Twinkle reverts alone pass the criteria for rollback. Just remember the golden rule: it's only for vandalism, not content disputes; use it improperly and it can be taken away again.
Many Recent changes patrollers go on to start using Huggle once they have rollback rights; you might want to consider that as a next step. There's also the Counter-vandalism unit and its associated Academy if you want to track down more anti-vandal resources. Best of luck, Yunshui  07:01, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Wow, I wasn't expecting that! Thanks! gwickwire | Leave a message 13:08, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

You wrote

Hi Hyperionsteel. I see no indication that you intend to do so, but in the interests of a quiet life for all can I ask you to refrain from re-entering claims about Joachim Martillo being a Holocaust denier into this article. Without very solid sources, it's a violation of WP:BLP. Cheers, Yunshui  13:46, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

My response

I understand your concern about this article and I can assure you I will not add, edit or reinsert any information or claims about Mr. Martillo unless they are properly sourced under Wikipedia's BLP policy (in fact, I don't even want to touch this until this issue is settled). Rather, I was pointing out to the user claiming to be Mr. Martillo that adding/editing information about oneself is strongly discouraged in Wikipedia, primarily due to COI concerns. What I should have clarified to this user earlier is that there are avenues within Wikipedia (see: WP:Problems in an article about you) that he can pursue if he believes that libelous/incorrect information about himself has been posted here.(Hyperionsteel (talk) 23:13, 15 October 2012 (UTC))
Agreed
After reviewing interviews with and articles written by Mr. Martillo on the Internet, I agree there is no evidence (aside from MEMRI's assertion) that he is a Holocaust denier (although some of his views and statements regarding on Jews and Israel are certainly questionable). Therefore, this claim should be removed from the article immediately.(Hyperionsteel (talk) 00:24, 16 October 2012 (UTC))
Cool. Like I said, I didn't expect you were going add it back again, and you were right to point out the COI issues involved; I just dropped you a note to keep you abreast of the situation. Thanks for looking into it more thoroughly, as well. Yunshui  06:46, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
(Also, kudos for the politely worded clarification on the article talkpage, that was very considerate) Yunshui  07:14, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

I have more doubts

Dear Yunshui, Thanks a lot for your reply I'm a new user in Wikipedia.I'm glad that i could help the world by editing and creating i would like to know how to contact other Wikipedia editors. i couldn't find any of the editor's email address. I usually seek help through personal messages and email's in other web forums. Thank you very much for your reply Jethro76 (talk) 07:41, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jethro76. Talkpages - like this one - are the usual means of communicating here. However, many users, myself included, have email enabled on our Wikipedia accounts (you can set this up for yourself by clicking on "My preferences" in the top right of your screen and setting your email preferences). If a user has email enabled, you'll see an option labelled "E-mail this user" under the toolbox menu on the left of your screen; clicking on this will open an email form. There's also an IRC channel where you can get live help in real-time. Yunshui  08:13, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:24, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

a recent unblock

hello, I was a bit late in getting my question [1] entered into the discussion as you had already unblocked based on an voluntary interaction ban. would that have affected your decision? -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:34, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

I've asked the user whether they have any comment... you're absolutely right, it does look rather fishy. I'm not going to revoke the unblock, at least not immediately, but if TheVforVendetta continues editing in a similar fashion we might need to add a line to the SPI case and request a checkuser. Yunshui  12:39, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. That seems to be the appropriate actions. I would not be surprised if now that the block is lifted the vendetta account does not edit at all in the future. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:27, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Anna Frodesiak's added Vendetta to the SPI, so we'll see what they make of him there. Yunshui  18:05, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Repeated minor vandalism by user Kevin12xd

Hi there,

Sorry about the user page revision, I just wanted the information visible for the following reason that I posted on the talk page of another admin who's involved:

User Kevin12xd seems to be up to his old tricks. In the past he has committed various acts of minor vandalism, and was blocked from editing (by you, I believe). Now that he's been re-instated, he's made this edit to my userpage, and one or two other random things (see his edit history. He then deleted the content of his talk page, presumably to remove evidence of the disruption he's caused. Here is a permalink to the revision before he blanked the page.

I'm not really sure what to make of it. I assume he was trying to trick me into believing that there was a legitimate problem with my username. Please leave a message on my talk page to let me know what you think!

I'm writing about one of the most influential Judo teachers in the US and my page was deleted. http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Leonard_carter&action=edit&redlink=1

The Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
Thanks again Yunshui, saved my userpage's again, are you sure IPs can't be indefinitely banned? This feels like Sock Puppetry on an IP level if you know what I mean. Anyway many thanks. CHCSPrefect (talk) 08:39, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

While i'm here can I ask for you to please Semi-Protect my Talk page? It's that they're obsesseed with causing havoc on. CHCSPrefect (talk) 08:42, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks again. We don't usually block IP addresses indefinitely because they are often either reallocated by the ISP or used by multiple users - for example, if I indef-blocked your school's IP, and five years down the school decided to do a project on Wikipedia (which many schools now do), none of the students would be able to create an account or make any edits. The normal progression with school IPs is to increase the block length over time, culminating in blocks of up to a year. After this point, if the vandalism continues Wikipedia will usually send an abuse report to the school. Ultimately, the responsibility for students' internet use lies with the school itself - it's their choice over whether to sanction the student(s) involved, blacklist Wikipedia on the school's servers or revoke pupils' internet access entirely.
Talkpage semi-protection isn't undertaken lightly - I'd suggest, since both school IPs are now blocked, that you wait and see for the time being whether the vandalism re-occurs under another IP. If it does, drop me a note and I'll give serious consideration to locking it down for you. Yunshui  08:51, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Cardinal Hume Catholic School are very well-endowed with IPs - they have the whole range from 82.33.215.0 to .31, though only .26 and .30 have contributions so far. That means that if there is any more trouble a range-block of 82.33.215.0/27 would take them out neatly. (Do you share my impression that Catholic schools are particularly prone to silly vandalism?) JohnCD (talk) 09:21, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
My experience has been that religious affiliation seems to make no difference - most schoolkids seem to think it's fun to vandalise stuff. A sad reflection of the state of modern youth?
Rangeblocking would make sense if the problems continue - I've not done one before but there's a first time for everything... Yunshui  09:28, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
By the way John, out of personal curiosity, how did you establish the range? Yunshui  09:30, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
I looked at WHOIS at the bottom of the contributions page for 82.33.215.0 (CHCS), 82.33.215.255 (somebody else), 82.33.215.31 (CHCS), 82.33.215.32 (somebody else). I haven't checked all 32, but if .0 and .31 are both CHCS it's highly likely they all are. JohnCD (talk) 09:40, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
That's logical. I was just wondering if you knew of some magical way to perform a reverse WHOIS. Yunshui  09:42, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

It makes sense what John is saying, to be honest guys i'm pretty sure these attacks have been from people in my class trying to annoy me for a laugh, we do have Vandalism history dating back to May (It's deleted because i've moved it all into a Word Document to help the servers, look for a log entry of about -24,000 and compare versions before that.) but those were random i'm sure, things come and go, just block the whole range if they keep going and by next week it'll probably be all forgotten, i'm very grateful for the help of you both. CHCSPrefect (talk) 09:48, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

I think the Talk Page protection would be a good idea. Meva - CHCSPrefect - GIMME A POTATO CHIP! C: (talk) 12:08, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Yunshui you are a fantastic individual in my opinion, you've been fantastic with all the help you've been :) I still have one more thing to ask though. How do you change the (talk) bit on a signature? Meva - CHCSPrefect - GIMME A POTATO CHIP! C: (talk) 13:29, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Depends what you want to change it to... basically you would use a pipe, so for example this: Meva - CHCSPrefect - GIMME A POTATO CHIP! C: would link the phrase "GIMME A POTATO CHIP! C:" to your talkpage. Yunshui  13:31, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

I tried it in My Sandbox but the signature still shows (talk). Am I missing something here? Meva - CHCSPrefect - Potato Chip (talk) 13:53, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Step-by-step instructions (and my apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know...):
 1. Go to "My preferences" in the top right of your screen.
 2. In the box under "Signature", delete everything there and copy this test string in its place: Meva - CHCSPrefect - GIMME A POTATO CHIP! C:
 3. Check the box that says "Treat the above as wiki markup".
 4. Save the page.
You should now find that four tildes produce a custom signature without the extra (talk) link. Yunshui  13:58, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Ah so it was the Wiki markup I was missing. Thanks a lot :) I noticed you're on Admin Review, I think i'll leave a good word there. Meva - CHCSPrefect - GIMME A POTATO CHIP! C: 14:11, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

The account was locked mainly due to the cross-wiki activity (locks are used in place of many scattered blocks throughout the wikis), with the log being here. If he says he won't disrupt enwiki again then I'm not averse to second chances, but I hope that disruption still doesn't extend to other wikis as well, or the account would need to be re-locked. -- Mentifisto 14:27, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

I apologies for the delay in answering your question re the unblock request of this user; I have been away and only returned today. (My userpage did show a wikibreak-template). I have no problem with an unblock, which of course has already been done; I would however have little hesitation in being ruthless in the case of any further asocial behaviour. User:CardinalBadboy has been banned but the ban...

Hi again Yun. It seems CardinalBadboy has had a block placed on him by your fellow Administrator Kinu, it's just the 31 Hours that bugs me since it was an edit on the School's IP Address. Did you intend to put an Indef upon his second vandalism knowing it is a Vandalism only account? Could I ask that you discuss the block time with Kinu? It could save a lot of trouble further down the line. Thank you :) Meva / CHCSPrefect - (Spare a Potato Chip?) 11:38, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

If there's more vandalism from the account once the block expires then I'd be thinking about a VOA indef, however I don't see any problem with Kinu's initial choice of timeframe - we try to be as forgiving as possible with blocks, and commonly block for a day or two to begin with in the hopes that the vandals will get bored and find somewhere else to troll. I'll keep an eye on the user's edits once the block runs out; if nothing constructive emerges then a longer or indefinite block could be the way to go. Yunshui  11:43, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Adoption/help

Hi Yunshui,

Thanks for your message! Yes, I have looked at the adoption page on a number of occasions with a view to seeking help. It does sound as if it might be appropriate - I bet the kind and very helpful hosts at the Teahouse are beginning to give a deep sigh (or groan!) whenever they see me returning to ask yet another question .

I do still have an awful lot of questions. For instance, someone kindly re-assessed the Setter article that I did some work on but made the comment that some references still needed to be sorted out. I spent all day on Sunday trying to work out how to do a list of shortened footnotes/citations to then link to the full length reference. You were right, it isn't something for beginners to try! I abandoned it in the end before I managed to crash my computer or even Wikipedia............

I find doing the research for information, then attempting to work out the syntax to include it and appropriate references correctly into an article fascinating. Wikipedia is a resource I have frequently used myself so I am disappointed when I discover the facts I'm looking for are not there and it's something I would like to help rectify.

A particular interest of mine is dog breeds, especially gundogs. While many articles about these are excellent, others do need work. It's something I hope to be able to play with during the forthcoming winter months, so if you are able to help - or can suggest another - who might like to 'adopt' me, I would be very grateful.

I'm working away from home for a week starting tomorrow morning, so will more or less be away from Wiki until next week.

Speaking in my capacity as a Teahouse host, we don't mind how many questions you ask there - knock yourself out (especially since, from what I recall, your questions tend to be quite interesting ones - I've nothing against explaining the notability guidelines again and again to diffrent users, but variety is the spice of life, after all...). As an additional note, if you haven't already joined the Dogs WikiProject you might like to do so; WikiProjects are a good way to locate articles in your area of interest that need creatin/improving, and it gives you access to a whole bunch of like-minded contributors who can give you help and ideas.
As regards adoption, I've taken on two new adoptees in the last couple of days and I'm waiting to see how they pan out - I may not be able to offer you my full attention if I adopted you at this point. There's a full list of adopters here, if you haven't already found it; I've worked with most of them at one time or another and haven't found a duff one yet... You might find Charlesdrakew or TAP good mentors; both are competent article creators and know their wiki-onions, so to speak. Alternatively, ask me again in a week or so when you get back; I'll have a better idea by then of how much work my new charges are going to require and whether I can take on any more adoptees. All the best, Yunshui  13:47, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, Yunshui. I have been looking at the Dogs Portal but had the impression it didn't appear particularly active at the moment on a 'collaborative' basis. People just seemed to be doing more of their own individual thing. I will have a thorough look through the list of adopters on my return next week ........ but may still get back to you to check how things have panned out for you with your current adoptees.
Thank you again for being so patient and helpful, it really is much appreciated!
SagaciousPhil - Chat 14:05, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Wikiprojects can be a bit hit-and-miss - some are hotbeds of collaborative activity, others have about three inactive users on their books and are essentially defunct... Enjoy your week away; I look forward to more interesting questions when you return! Yunshui  14:09, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Need Help

Hi Yunshui, I am KRISTEEN65. I saw that you have answered my question in the tea house and you have asked if I need your help for seeing the previous pages of an article. You have asked its name. Its name is Zee Gold Awards. This page has been deleted and I want to get its text. Please help me getting the text of this deleted article. KRISTEEN65; Talk; contribs)17:38, 23 October 2012 (IST)

Well, the bad news is that the article was deleted as a copyright violation, meaning that no right-thinking administrator is going to restore it for you. The good news is that it was deleted as a copyright violation, meaning that the original text came from somewhere other than Wikipedia, specifically this page and this one. You can therefore view the text at these two sites, rather than on Wikipedia. Hope this helps, Yunshui  12:15, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
But Yunshui, actually only one line from this article was from a copyright page. Is there no way to get the remaining text of the article.
Well, I want to ask about how to redirect a page. KRISTEEN65; Talk; contribs)17:53, 23 October 2012 (IST)
Easy peasy - just replace the content of the page with the code: #REDIRECT name of target page. If there's any chance of people disagreeing with the redirect, though, I suggest you discuss it on the article's talkpage first. There's more information at Help:Redirect. Yunshui  12:26, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
KRISTEEN65, may I ask how you know that only one line from the article was infringing? The article was deleted long before you created your account here. —Psychonaut (talk) 12:41, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Judging from the version of Zee Gold Awards immediately prior to deletion, it was a combination of note six from here, text from here and the first paragraph from here - far more than just one line. Psychonaut has a point, above; how is it that you're aware of the page's content when it was deleted around three weeks before your account was created? Yunshui  12:49, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Answer for Question

Psychonaut, Let me tell you that I have created my account a few days before. I had no account. I read the page of Zee Gold Awards and noticed hardly one or two lines from a copyright site. I hope you will be satisfied with my explaination. Thank You for the help Yunshui. KRISTEEN65; Talk; contribs)19:24, 23 October 2012 (IST)
Fair enough, that's pretty much what I assumed. However, as I said above, the entire article was indeed lifted word-for-word from several non-free sources. I'm guessing you only checked out one of them; there were at least three separate sites that I could find which had been plagiarised. Yunshui  14:07, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Nope. It's now clear that KRISTEEN65 is a sockpuppet of User:Vibhas Kashyap. Exact same editing pattern, and moreover making repeated requests to retrieve the text of User:Vibhas Kashyap's deleted contributions. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Vibhas Kashyap. —Psychonaut (talk) 08:46, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Facepalm They never learn, do they? Thanks for the heads-up, Psychonaut. Yunshui  09:01, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Please help

Dear Yunshui,

please advice me. The WP article on Ms. Ekberg is causing harm. Sources are biased; 1) GenderWar (article source 1,2,3) has been reprimanded by Swedish TV Review Board for presenting biased and false information. 2) article 4 is outright slander. 3) This person is not notable, except for one event, which 3) causes serious harm and threats. 4) Reproducing this event / information on this event through WP is a problem. Still now, years and years after the event 5) WP has a policy a) attackpages b) notability c) on linking to external harassment.

No vandalism intentded! To the contrary. Please contact me by private email.

Paperclip — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paperclip22 (talkcontribs) 13:49, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Paperclip22. I'm afraid I can't see what the problem is with this page. The events relating to Evin Rubar are reliably reported in Sweden's largest daily newspaper and another Bonnier Group outlet; are you trying to argue that these don't meet the requirements for reliable sources? The biographies of living persons policy doesn't say that we must never report anything negative about a living person, only that such additions must be supported by reliable sources, which these claims are. In addition , One event doesn't apply here - going purely by the sources, Ms Ekberg is notable for both the comments made to Rubar and separately for her work with CATW.
The article therefore doesn't meet any of the criteria for speedy deletion. You would be best advised, if you are determined to have it removed, to take it to Articles for deletion instead (full instructions on filing an AFD are here). Yunshui  14:03, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Yunshui, Again, no vandalism intended. To the contrary. Two things: First, I do not dispute that any event took place. I do not dispute the reliability of newspapers, but of GenderWar. I dispute the notability of this event and reproduction of this incident on this website. Which is why I tagged the article under notability. Second, the person in question does not work for CATW. What I asked you was advice and understanding/empathy for the situation. The event itself was a direct attack. reproducing it reproduces harm. Paperclip — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paperclip22 (talkcontribs) 14:31, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Additional sources have since been added to the article (including a couple which demonstrate that she did indeed work for CATW), it's now amply referenced for notability purposes. Gender War is not being used as a source; the information in the article is taken from the Dagens Nyheter. Sources confirm that the incident took place and was covered in several reliable media outlets; the information is therefore appropriate for the article. It is phrased in neutral, non-judgemental language within the article, and therefore meets the requirements of WP:BLP. Yunshui  07:17, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Archivistsusan. You're very welcome to recreate the page (and the one on Ruth S. Morgenthau mentioned below). Just bear in mind the issues raised on your talkpage regarding close paraphrasing and copyright. I would suggest that you locate several additional sources on these women, read through them, and then try to write an article that synthesises the information in all the sources, rather than relying on a single biographical reference - this makes it much more difficult to inadvertently infringe copyright. Use your own words and you'll be fine. If you want to, you're also welcome to create the pages at Articles for creation or in your sandbox, in which case I'd by happy to look them over for you before they go "live". Hi Aarganesh. The version of the article that I deleted had none of the above sources in it - in fact, it contained no sources at all. It also gave no indication that Mr Kumar was in any way likely to be notable, so it was duly deleted under criterion A7 of the speedy deletion policy. If you would like to recreate the page, you are free to do so. However, I should point out that of the sources you propose above, only one - the Namadhu Nambikkai article - might meet the requirements for a reliable source (equally, it might not - since I don't read Tamil, I can't readily assess its editorial quality or affiliations). Sites created by Mr Kumar, blogs, LinkedIn profiles and Facebook pages are emphatically not considered reliable sources here. The requirements for inclusion are set out in simple terms on this page; I suggest you have a read of that before creating the article again. Yunshui  07:04, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Reply from Ganesh - 24 October 2012

Hi Yunshui Would you consider the credibility of this article please? This should be more credible for Mr HVK Sir; http://gulftoday.ae/portal/ccebff5a-dcee-4408-a7d0-37230fc88e3c.aspx

Regarding the Tamil magazine, I'm 100% not lying about it. If you want, I can establish a tele conference between the editor of the Tamil magazine & you (they can speak in English) to prove the credibility of both the magazine & HVK Sir.

Otherwise, I can get you the email ID of the magazine "Namadhu Nambikkai" & you can email to the editor verifying the credibility.

Hope this was convincing & hoping to get your approval to publish the same :) Thanks in advance.

Regards Ganesh .R — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aarganesh (talkcontribs) 13:04, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

It's an interview, so one would be slightly wary, but I reckon there's enough in the Gulf Today article to support inclusion. He certainly sounds like an interesting character. I'd recommend you go ahead and recreate the article; I'll restore the deleted version to your userpage so you can work on it. No need to set up a teleconference for me; I'm happy to assume good faith, and we've got plenty of editors who speak Tamil and can check the sources out if needs be. Yunshui  13:12, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your consideration & allowing us to publish :) Have a great day ahead. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aarganesh (talkcontribs) 13:29, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

How do I find edits that were made in good-faith but were unconstructive?

Hi Yunshui. I am currently completing the assignment you assigned me. Please answer the heading. Thanks! KazLabz (talk) 23:01, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

I'd suggest Recent changes (there's a link in the Interaction menu on the left of your screen). This shows all the most recent alterations to Wikipedia pages. Check a few at random; you'll come across unconstructive edits sadly all too soon. The rationale behind this particular task is to show that you can understand the difference between edits that were well-meaning but ultimately made the encyclopedia worse (if I may say so, there are several of these in your own edit history!) and edits that were made with the deliberate intent of damaging the project (vandalism). Yunshui  07:22, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Hm. I really hate to disappoint, especially since these attacks are clearly directed at you personally, but I'm afraid I can't see that they meet the requirements for revision deletion. Lutalo Muhammad VANDALISED ENTRIES

Dear Yunshui,

There is a user by name of egghead06 and by the name of David Biddulph who keeps vandalising the site of Lutalo Muhammad, the Olympic Taekwondo athlete.

He is a menace who undermines and deletes Lutalo's achievements continuously.

I want to know if there is a way he can be blocked.

Kind regards,

legalactionjackson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Legalactionjackson (talkcontribs) 11:29, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Actually, Legalactionjackson, their edits are correct, and yours are at fault. You are removing sourced information from the page, and adding unsourced information. That's never good on Wikipedia. Furthermore, at this point, edit warring, which you have been advised is inappropriate on your talk page. Please self-revert your own edit, and then go to Talk:Lutalo Muhammad and discuss your concerns. If you don't, you're going to be the one who is blocked. Qwyrxian (talk) 11:56, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

I've made an attempt to try and make the user understand what's going on. No idea if it will help. CaptRik (talk) 12:39, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks to both of you. I've rather regretfully filed a report at the edit warring noticeboard, both to get more eyes on this issue and to allow a neutral admin to stabilise the article (I don't feel I can block or protect in this instance, since I've made a revert to the page myself). I still fail to see this supposed defamation/denigration; the Muhammad/Cook controversy was heavily covered at the time (I followed it closely myself) and I can't see how it detracts from Muhammad's Olympic achievments in the slightest. Yunshui  12:49, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind...

...that I did a non-admin closure for the AN thread related to the above since it was obvious that you wanted it closed. Cheers, SassyLilNugget (talk) 14:02, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Cheers for that. Yunshui  14:02, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello Mr Yunshui, Here is article i am interested in , Currently i just edited the intro part ,but the whole article is written very subjectively . do not want it to rejected how can i get some more time to edit and review the article ? Shrikanthv (talk) 08:50, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Wow, jumping in at the deep end, I see... that's a page that will need a lot of work. Still, it's not unsalvagable; you should have a go at improving it. Firstly, since it's at AFC there's no real time limit - it can be submitted and rejected as many times as is necessary before being turned into an article, so you're not under any deadline to get it up to scratch. Take your time; if another rejection notice appears just carry on and resubmit when you think it's ready.
The two main issues you'll need to address are as follows:
 • Tone/language. Since English isn't your first language you may find this the most difficult aspect to deal with, but don't worry - do what you can and then I or another editor can always clean up the minor details. The most important thing is to try and make it understandable to readers who don't know much about Hinduism; simplify the language, explain some of the terms used or rephrase them into English equivalents, make the language objective, and try to create a structured route through the article.
 • Sort out some better references - a few links to bits of the Bhagavad Gita are fine, but you need to find scholarly works which discuss the concept of Ananda in Hinduism - non-Hindu sources would be preferable. Try looking at Google Books and Google Scholar for starters, and see how you go. Avoid sources that seem to be subjective or are published by small or specialist publishing houses.
Best of luck! Yunshui  09:13, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Mr. Yunshui, I have gone through this topic in the past and also may be allways going through this topic once in a while. there seems to be a problem and help me out 1) There are 4 books written in (old sanskrit)(vedas). and out of which the short summaries are again written on, of about more than 100 + (upanishads). Again written in old sanskrit, out of which only 10-11 are known and famous. 2) There are countless authors who have tried to translate the topics and try to bring about the meaning or true essence of it. (very subjective) 3) there cannot be a summary or generalising of topic meanings over here. as the interpreters have intepreted the subject in a vastly different manners.

so how to go about writting this highly philosophical and subjective topic ?. Is it fine if i try to qoute different takes from different authors ? Shrikanthv (talk) 12:08, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Quotes from multiple authors are fine, although a better approach would be to summarise their positions in your own words and cite them as a source. If possible, be selective: choose scholarly authors who are known for their contributions to religious studies or Hindu history, and who have been published by well-known and respected publishing houses or journals. You don't have to report the opinion of every hippy yogi wannabe who has put out a book through CreateSpace... Try to avoid using the original Sanskrit sources as much as possible; they are primary sources and subject to multiple interpretations (as you're already aware!). Needless to say, avoid at all costs trying to give your own idea of what Ananda is (WP:NOR) - just convey, as best you can, the most prevelant modern view of the topic, and any divergent view that is sufficiently well-represented. Yunshui  12:17, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Mr Yunshui, I have created the article Ānanda_(Hindu_philosophy), please have a look and recommend improvements. Shrikanthv (talk) 10:51, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi Shrikanthv. I have done some copyediting to the first half of the article; the second half, is, frankly beyond me, and might be worth ditching altogether (it's highly POV and thus inappropriate under the neutral tone policy, giving far to much weigh to the Advaita Vedanta school of thought). More concerning, though, is that fact that you apparently copied-and-pasted some of the text from Soni Ruchi's AFC - I have placed a copied template on the talkpage to allow for this, but copying text without attribution is a violation of copyright: please don't do it again. In addition, it was somewhat inappropriate to create an article yourself based on work that another user was already putting together at AFC. Content forking like this to resolve an editing dispute is very much frowned upon. Now that the article is "live", it would be a good idea to include Soni Ruchi in its continued evolution; I notice that you've already placed a link on his talkpage, which is commendable.
I have also added the page to WikiProject Hinduism, which will hopefully help draw some more experienced editors who are knowledgable about Hinduism-related topics. Yunshui  11:44, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Mr Yunshui. Was unaware of content forking, Thanks for helping, currently i have moved the contraversial content to talk page asking for acertaining and structuring (which i find is a authors POV ) and does not belong to any one of well known authors or contents available. will see what others think Shrikanthv (talk) 12:32, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
