New user (Max)

[edit]

This is a university student who is a new user who should be trying to create new content with references and in their own words. They should be using their sandbox. I'm willing to help if required. Victuallers (talk) 10:33, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Max, I see that your draft Alipay looks good. You seem to have some assistance. Can you consider what we should do about combining your work with the article Alipay. Maybe @RHaworth: has a suggestion. Victuallers (talk) 22:34, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

RHaworth, I see you have made a lot of changes. Can you explain your rationale? There was an invitation for you to discuss this with the user who had created a new draft. Victuallers (talk) 23:26, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

RHaworth, Thanks - although I'm confused by a more general point. Where are new users meant to test their skills? If I wanted to create an improved version of a wiki article or to try a restructure then I would use a sandbox or maybe a draft. I wouldn't expect to find that my new version would be deleted or moved - unless I was breaking real world laws or I was creating collateral damage to the real wiki (like new categories can). This would be a fork if it was moved into real space, but surely it is not a fork until that happens? If a new user wants to test their skills then they might choose their mum or they might try writing a bio of Winston Churchill. Can they do this using a sandbox? We can both see why this will not be useful to Wikimedia but it could be very useful to their training. Are they allowed to do this? — Victuallers (talk) 08:36, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • "A lot of changes". I would say that six edits is a small number of changes. I shall reply to your second message in due course but let us see if Max is receiving.
Max, when you started your edits were you aware of the mainspace Alipay article? Did you intend your draft to become a complete replacement to the existing article or were you preparing additional material? Please explain this edit. That which you deleted was good material and more useful than details of the transaction process. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 12:19, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
