Per your request at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page/questions#Using newspaper article as a source, I am cross-posting my reply. To source a news article, you can use {{Cite news}} (complicated) or simply paste the url of The New York Times abstract page within <ref> tags, like this: <ref>http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F10915F93454177A93CAAB178BD95F418685F9</ref>. So long as you do not copy and paste (violate the copyright of) the content of the news article, you are free to adapt it into a Wikipedia article, paraphrasing the original content.
