Apropos of nothing

[edit]

Only a few minutes ago I was reading something or other on /. and randomly noticed your name because of your low UID. And now I'm about to sign the flagged revisions straw poll and there you are again! It really is a small world. (Even smaller - you were born one year and one day before me.) :)

Cheers, — Hex (❝?!❞) 23:19, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, small world, indeed =) --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 23:26, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Auraphonic Deletion 23/1108

[edit]

Hi,

was reading on Wiki about Single Gun Theory and clicked on the link to Jacqui Hunt'solo work Auraphonic. It claims you have deleted the page???

Can you please tell me why, as Jacqui Hunt is one of the members from Single Gun Theory!!

Thanks

Geoff220.237.6.201 (talk) 05:42, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Appears that I've deleted it mistakenly under the "notability not established and artist's article doesn't exist either" criterion; Jacqui Hunt's article doesn't exist (I now created a redirect), but Single Gun Theory's does, so I guess on second thought, deleting it under this criterion was questionable. Apologies and thanks for bringing it up; I've restored the article, but it could still use improvement! --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 11:03, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You stupid bisexual person deleted my dads company wiki page!!! WHY??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.118.28.115 (talk) 05:41, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I have deleted any company pages recently, and your IP address doesn't seem to have any deleted pages in edit history, so it would help if you could give me the title of the article, and I'll look into it. Most likely cause of speedy deletions of company articles is that they lack verifiable indication of notability (CSD A7); in other words, the subject has to be covered in third-party sources such as newspapers, journals, etc., and those have to be in the article themselves. It is highly preferred to have at least this bare minimum of information in the articles right from the beginning. And please remember, these deletions are nothing personal; please assume good faith and things will work out much smoother. If you need the article to be restored to work on it in your user space, let me know - you may want to create an account first though. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 09:53, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brand new and confused.

[edit]

Hi,

I'm brand new to Wikipedia and still rather confused. I am using "Wikipedia; The Missing Manual" for basic guidance, as well as looking at articles.

I am attempting to expand a stub on Philip Frohman, architect of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. I have drafted the article and am working on formatting it for Wikipedia. I have a half-dozen sources, mostly books, including one that I use extensively. I think the formatting of the footnotes is going to look awkward. I have created (I think) a personal sandbox on my user page to work on this.

Would it be possible to ask you to review it after I have done my formatting and solicit your suggestions as to what options there are to make the footnoting better? I would appreciate it.

If you respond and don't hear back from me, it's only because I can't figure out where to go to get your response.

My user name is tomaterols. I am adding the four tildes, as requested, which appears to also give you my contact information Thank you.

Thanks so much for the prompt response and offer of help!

[edit]

I just wanted to let you know I got the message. I spent most of yesterday working on Wiki and things are beginning to make some sense.

I have read some of the materials you suggested, but will make sure I have read the others. Sometimes the information seems to get very complicated pretty fast. I'm glad to hear your review found I was starting on the right track.

I still need to add another paragraph that I somehow lost yesterday. Once I've gone over it and gotten it as good as I can, I'll definitely ask for your review and further suggestions.

Thanks again.

Tomaterols (talk) 15:48, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Back again.

[edit]

I've looked over the materials you listed on my talk page as well as some other things in both Wikipedia and the book.

I have moved my article to a new subpage called drafts, as I want to use the sandbox to try out some templates.

I think the article is ready for you to review. My only concern (you may well have others) is the footnotes. I think it looks awkward having a nearly complete alphabet attached to my principal reference. The style I really like is footnote 1 in the Abraham Lincoln biography, where you just get directed to the author/date/page in "References" and then get directed to the full information under "Bibliography." But I haven't figured out how to create that yet, and I question whether a separate bibliography section is really needed when there are so few books cited.

If you would take a look at the draft I would appreciate it. Please recall there is already a stub with the author's name and one or two sentences of information.

Thanks. (where did they put that tilde thing?)

[edit]

I really appreciate the information and encouragement. I am just about ready to move it into the stub. I will, however, look over the templates you suggested first and fiddle around with it a bit more. I do understand that the initial expansion of a stub need not be a "finished" product (to the extent any wiki article is finished) but as my first substantive edit, I want to do the best job possible.

Once I add this material to a stub I will see if I can follow the steps in the Wiki stub article to remove its stub status. Thanks again. In the (unlikely) situation you think I may be of any help, feel free to ask me.--Tomaterols (talk) 16:00, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wow...

You deleted my page on Erie Brewing Company within seconds of posting it. I was entering biography of the company and has significance to breweries in Pennsylvania but was deleted so fast I could not enter the data. Reviews

[edit]

There is this kind of big gray hole about notability versus sourcing around all subjects on Wikipedia, not just software. Linux.com is a good reliable source. Linux.com doesn't make a notability claim though. My favorite analogy is New York hot dog carts. There are hundreds and most have several reviews in the alt-weekly papers. If we started accepting restaurant reviews for the purpose of notability, we would have hundred of articles about hot dog carts. Common sense tells us that is the wrong outcome.

That is kind of where we are with software articles right now, there is no written and accepted minimum notability standard for software articles, but we have hundreds of article with a list of features (most of which are not unique) and a link to the authors homepage. As geeky people who use software, we kind of take it for granted. But really, the non-default media player, for the non-default shell, of a less-popular Linux distro, for Linux, which itself only has 1% desktop share - it becomes diminishing returns to find real world notability claims for this stuff. Even if we use this stuff every day, the rest of the world is ignoring it. Miami33139 (talk) 21:12, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

uninterested observer, but I for one would like to see this article exist in its newly improved format. riffic (talk) 15:53, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Ultima7-fov-exult.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ultima7-fov-exult.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 03:44, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Several Ultima articles are up for destruction

[edit]

You have participated in the Lord British article before, and your user page shows you to be very interested in the Ultima related articles. Some have decided it should be eliminated entirely, with some information merged over elsewhere, but most lost forever. The same is being done for Avatar_(Ultima) and The_Companions_of_the_Avatar. In addition, one Ultima topic is up for deletion at the AFD. Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Worlds_of_Ultima Please share your opinions to form consensus. Dream Focus 16:55, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see what I can do. Right now, my debating skills are extremely rusty and I'm out of touch with the current deletion rhetoric. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 09:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How would you feel about creating a WikiProject for Ultima?

[edit]

Since you state on your user page you are interested in the Ultima articles, and have contributed to them, how would you feel about creating WikiProject Ultima? That will help all Ultima fans keep track of what's going with the articles, and discuss whatever needs to be done. Dream Focus 17:41, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The thought has crossed my mind, but I haven't felt there would have necessarily been enough critical mass to launch a whole wikiproject for such a narrow topic. Narrow-topic projects don't thrive as well as they used to. If the Final Fantasy Wikiproject had to be merged to the Square Enix Wikiproject, what chances would an Ultima project have? I was thinking a some sort of a working group under Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games would be a much better fit, if there were enough people and motivation to run it... --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 09:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of just a way for the fans to become aware of any attempt to delete, merge, redirect, or mass delete information within an article, so they could go and share their thoughts on the matter and stop it. I noticed the article for the Guardian has been deleted, with just one more person saying delete than keep. If I had noticed at the time, I would've said Keep. Since Wikipedia doesn't allow people to sign up for notifications of delete/merge/redirect, and its impossible to keep track of a thousand different things through a watchlist, having a project is the only way to be informed with something you care about is challenged. Dream Focus 09:40, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Theoretically, what matters in the deletion debates is not how many people say the article needs to be deleted, but what arguments they can provide. And what I advocated as a working group under WPVG would still not be much different from what a full-blown wikiproject would do: "these VG-related deletions are of interest to people editing Ultima articles". Besides, that'd reduce the load - it'd be easier to sift through WPVG's lists for Ultima deletion notices than comb for them through the daily deletion notices on your own. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 09:55, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Dream focus has a great idea
When the South Park episodes was about to be deleted, editors came together and created a South Park Wikiproject, to help build and add references to South Park articles, making the articles good articles and featured articles. A Second goal was to assure that South Park Episodes would never be threated with deletion again. You have hundreds of editors, who regualrly edit Ultima articles, and care about them. Having one central place they can work together would benefit everyone and benefit wikipedia. Ikip (talk) 20:57, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here you go, here is an example of how it can be done:

Since you are a fan of the Ultima series, I thought I'd contact you ask if you were interested in our new WikiProject dedicated to improving all Ultima related articles on Wikipedia. If so, please sign up at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Video_games/Ultima

Google says that 56 people have the same template you have on your user page saying you love the Ultima series. That's enough critical mass to get a project going, don't you think? I'm contacting everyone now. Please consider joining. Dream Focus 15:25, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please update your status with WP:VG

[edit]

Dear WikiProject Video games member,

You are receiving this message because you have either Category:WikiProject Video games members or {{User WPVG}} somewhere in your userspace and you have edited Wikipedia in recent months.

The Video games project has created a member list to provide a clearer picture of its active membership.

All members have currently been placed in the "Inactive" section by default. Please remove your username from the "Inactive" listing and place it under the "Active" listing if you plan on regularly:

Ideally, members are encouraged to do both, but either one meets our criteria of inclusion. Members still listed inactive at the beginning of November 2009 may be removed. You may re-add yourself to the active list at any time. Thank you for your help, and we look forward to working with you.

Starship Troopers

I reverted your edit here. What game are you talking about? I don't remember him being credited in any of them, despite the similarities between the two universes. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 16:19, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't think it was credited in the games, but I vaguely remember some sort of discussion comparing Starship Troopers and Halo's ODSTs - too bad I can't remember exactly where it was. But if you think it's significant enough to keep it off the article unless there's a very definite source, I can understand that. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 16:46, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
