WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 5
Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:
In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.
Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.
Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.
There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.
The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

I'm curious as to why you marked a page I've only just created for deletion Rebecca_Spelman. This is about a living notable person and includes citations from online reliable sources such as The Voice, The Telegraph, and Channel4. I'm not sure why you wouldn't class those sources as reliable, or how more reliable it could be for a new article.

It is the first time I am doing this and am a bit unfamiliar with the process. How can I provide the copyright? This is an image of the minister and I am his admin, for which the image is original and he has the copyright. I can have him write an email to confirm. Would that do solve the problem?

- @AIVIIR: @50.153.134.165: Unless you took the photo AND own the copyright you cannot upload it here without the copyright holder verifying their permission. Did you not notice the copyright notice at the bottom of the page you found the image on. Remember that the vast majority of images you will find on the internet are copyright to someone and must be clearly freely licenced for us to be able to use them. You may find it useful to read my image copyright information page. You should address all your comments to the deletion nomination page not here because no one else is likely to see them here. WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 6
Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:
Some good news: the Wikimedia Foundation has renewed WikiProject X. This means we can continue focusing on making WikiProjects better.
During our first round of work, we created a prototype WikiProject based on two ideas: (1) WikiProjects should clearly present things for people to do, and (2) The content of WikiProjects should be automated as much as possible. We launched pilots, and for the most part it works. But this approach will not work for the long term. While it makes certain aspects of running a WikiProject easier, it makes the maintenance aspects harder.
We are working on a major overhaul that will address these issues. New features will include:
- Creating WikiProjects by simply filling out a form, choosing which reports you want to generate for your project. This will work with existing bots in addition to the Reports Bot reports. (Of course, you can also have sections curated by humans.)
- One-click button to join a WikiProject, with optional notifications.
- Be able to define your WikiProject's scope within the WikiProject itself by listing relevant pages and categories, eliminating the need to tag every talk page with a banner. (You will still be allowed to do that, of course. It just won't be required.)
The end goal is a collaboration tool that can be used by WikiProjects but also by any edit-a-thon or group of people that want to coordinate on improving articles. Though implemented as an extension, the underlying content will be wikitext, meaning that you can continue to use categories, templates, and other features as you normally would.
This will take a lot of work, and we are just getting started. What would you like to see? I invite you to discuss on our talk page.

- @Ww2censor:but all the Images used in the series of Ilaiyaraaja YYYY are a part of the discography and the posters are movies which increase the understandability of the article, and used to present the key visual aspect of the article. WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 7
This month:
Development of the extension for setting up WikiProjects, as described in the last issue of this newsletter, is currently underway. No terribly exciting news on this front.
In the meantime, we are working on a prototype for a new service we hope to announce soon. The problem: there are requests scattered all across Wikipedia, including requests for new articles and requests for improvements to existing articles. We Wikipedians are very good at coming up with lists of things to do. But once we write these lists, where do they end up? How can we make them useful for all editors—even those who do not browse the missing articles lists, or the particular WikiProjects that have lists?
Introducing Wikipedia Requests, a new tool to centralize the various lists of requests around Wikipedia. Requests will be tagged by category and WikiProject, making it easier to find requests based on what your interests are. Accompanying this service will be a bot that will let you generate reports from this database on any wiki page, including WikiProjects. This means that once a request is filed centrally, it can syndicated all throughout Wikipedia, and once it is fulfilled, it will be marked as "complete" throughout Wikipedia. The idea for this service came about when I saw that it was easy to put together to-do lists based on database queries, but it was harder to do this for human-generated requests when those requests are scattered throughout the wiki, siloed throughout several pages. This should especially be useful for WikiProjects that have overlapping interests.
The newsletter this month is fairly brief; not a lot of news, just checking in to say that we are hard at work and hope to have more for you soon.

Article assessment
You seem to be the only person who does article assessments for the Irish articles. Believe it or not I am trying to learn from your comments too - I try to remember not to use ==Biography== but it creeps in when I copy an article which uses it and I forget to remove it....If you have any suggestions of things I can do to improve the articles do let me know. But mostly thank you for reviewing them.

- Thanks for commenting. I've been assessing the Irish articles since July 2007 when just over 1,000 article had been tagged and it is now approaching 50,000. There used to be 3 or 4 others dong the job but they have dropped off. Mostly it's a thankless task. I don't know if you can learn much from my assessments as I now use the rater tool and it adds summary details by default. Normally any reasonably educated editor can be a decent judge of the class rating especially Stub or Start and GA and FA are defined by their own review/nomination process. Sometimes C and B-class are perhaps a bit more difficult to decide but importance ratings are rather subjective and should always be decided in relation to the totally of the Ireland project. I presume you have read Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/Assessment and its details of class and importance ratings. I don't see that you have yet joined the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/Members which you should probably do it you are interested in Irish articles. I have seen many article with a main section called Biography when really the whole article is a biography so choosing a section header like Life and career, Life and work or just Life are alternatives. I also have User:AlexNewArtBot/IrelandSearchResult on my watchlist, where potential new Irish articles are listed, but I don't review it as much as I would like due to spending more time on the commons which also prevents me from writing new articles I want to. Just ask if you want some specific advise. BTW, I did a little rearranging of Josephine Ryan which you might want to review for better formatting. I'm not sure I would use the separate citation style for short articles like this one. ww2censor (talk) 00:01, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

- Aboutmovies who has more that 3 times my edits and is very productive has been here just a few months longer than I have, had already assessed it as a C-class so I did not reassess it. Class ratings are the same for all wikiprojects. I tend to be a bit conservative in assessing articles but remember that assessments are actually quite subjective. Re: Máirín Cregan, if it had more citations I would probably have given it a C. BTW, when uploading images you do not put the subject name in the non-free licence template. Fill it in with "|image has rationale=yes" if it has one a leave it blank per the template instruction. Also there is no need to thank me for each assessment but thanks. I just fill in the template in the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. I'll read through it more carefully when I use it again. I thought it was one of the mandatory fields. I usually only give as many citations as prove the statements, I probably could have given more. - Not a problem. I seem to now be the only one concentrating on assessing Irish articles that find at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Ireland articles by quality log. There used to be 4 or 5 people doing it. My assessment may be the first unless someone already adds the basic template or picks it up elsewhere and does it. I don't use the upload wizard but I think when you choose a fair-use historically significant image and from the licence the same drop down licence it shows the "|image has rationale=yes" in the licence it will attache but I think you have to add that after upload. Citation-wise less I suppose is better and there is no real reason to add more so long as there are enough to verify the statements. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 17:14, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

'Biography' vs. 'Life'
Hi User:Ww2censor. Please stop renaming 'Biography' sections to 'Life'. It is not correct that a biographical article as a whole is a biography as you seem to assume. I am, for instance, writing a lot of composer biographies. In the guidelines to WikiProjects Composers (Wikipedia:WikiProject_Composers#Sections) it is very clearly mentioned that these articles should consist of a 'Biography', followed by 'Music', 'Legacy' etc., whatever is appropriate. I changed back a few of the articles I feel responsible for, but you should generally refrain from editing this. – Aklein62 (talk) 09:32, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
- That convention must be a Project Composer's only guideline. I've not seen it mentioned elsewhere as a requirement for a header title. To me biographical and biography are just the noun and adjective of the same concept even if you disagree. Many other articles use "Life and work," Life and career" or some such header, when there is not enough prose to provide more sections. But as you wish, I just won't bother with such articles. BTW, with your German and Irish music interest, are you familiar with Fritz Brase seeing as he is mentioned elsewhere and has a dewiki page at de:Fritz Brase? He should really have an article. Eliza Schneider
There is no way Eliza Schneider was born in 1978. That would make her a 12yo college student and a 16yo college grad (UCLA 1994). And she was definitely over 16 when she was on Beakman. 1972 seems much more realistic. - Well I'm sorry but no, I can't help you, so let me explain. You joined and uploaded that image onto russia.wikia today but the original YouTube video is not freely licensed. Look at the licence; when you click the "MORE INFO" button you see the license is the "Standard YouTube License" and it does not state "reuse allowed" so we will cannot accept it here. It is most likely copyright to the production company or TV station. Even though wikia is freely licensed the image you uploader there is a copyright violation and should be removed. WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 8
This month:
In the last issue of the WikiProject X Newsletter, I discussed the upcoming Wikipedia Requests system: a central database for outstanding work on Wikipedia. I am pleased to announce Wikipedia Requests is live! Its purpose is to supplement automatically generated lists, such as those from SuggestBot, Reports bot, or Wikidata. It is currently being demonstrated on WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health (which I work on as part of my NIOSH duties) and WikiProject Women scientists.
Adding a request is as simple as filling out a form. Just go to the Add form to add your request. Adding sources will help ensure that your request is fulfilled more quickly. And when a request is fulfilled, simply click "mark as complete" and it will be removed from all the lists it's on. All at the click of a button! (If anyone is concerned, all actions are logged.)
With this new service is a template to transclude these requests: {{Wikipedia Requests}}. It's simple to use: add the template to a page, specifying article=
, category=
, or wikiproject=
, and the list will be transcluded. For example, for requests having to do with all living people, just do {{Wikipedia Requests|category=Living people}}
. Use these lists on WikiProjects but also for edit-a-thons where you want a convenient list of things to do on hand. Give it a shot!
The value of Wikipedia Requests comes from being a centralized database. The long work to migrating individual lists into this combined list is slowly underway. As of writing, we have 883 open tasks logged in Wikipedia Requests. We need your help building this list.
If you know of a list of missing articles, or of outstanding tasks for existing articles, that you would like to migrate to this new system, head on over to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Requests#Transition project and help out. Doing this will help put your list in front of more eyes—more than just your own WikiProject.
WikiProject X maintains a database that associates article talk pages (and draft talk pages) with WikiProjects. This database powers many of the reports that Reports bot generates. However, until very recently, this database was not made available to others who might find its data useful. It's only common sense to open up the database and let others build tools with it.
And indeed: Citation Hunt, the game to add citations to Wikipedia, now lets you filter by WikiProject, using the data from our database.
Are you a tool developer interested in using this? Here are some details: the database resides on Tool Labs with the name s52475__wpx_p
. The table that associates WikiProjects with articles and drafts is called projectindex
. Pages are stored by talk page title but in the future this should change. Have fun!
- The work on the CollaborationKit extension continues. The extension will initially focus on reducing template and Lua bloat on WikiProjects (especially our WPX UI demonstration projects), and will from there create custom interfaces for creating and maintaining WikiProjects.
- The WikiCite meeting will be in Berlin in May. The goal of the meeting is to figure out how to build a bibliographic database for use on the Wikimedia projects. This fits in quite nicely with WikiProject X's work: we want to make it easier for people to find things to work on, and with a powerful, open bibliographic database, we can build recommendations for sources. This feature was requested by the Wikipedia Library back in September, and this meeting is a major next step. We look forward to seeing what comes out of this meeting.

Teamwork.com - articles for deletion [4]
Hi there,
I work for Teamwork.com and noticed that our Wiki page has been nominated for deletion. I've read over the links from SwisterTwister talk Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2016_May_20#Teamwork.com but I am still unsure about what I need to do up to update this page to prevent it from being deleted.
Your comment was "My searches have found several links throughout the years from News and browsers but still nothing to suggest the applicable notability and nothing from the current article is also better convincing." Can you let me know what "still nothing to suggest the applicable notability and nothing from the current article is also better convincing" means?
I've also read the Deletion Policy Wikipedia:Deletion policy but still can't figure out which one of the 14 reasons is applicable to our page.
I'll start work on editing the page today, but if there is any specific that I need to do, can you let me know?

- Yes indeed, the reason is that there are no suitable source that confirm the company's notability, so firstly because you work for company you have a clear conflict of interest and should not be editing that article. Second, if there are errors or information from reliable sources you should post that on the talk page and ask a non-conflicted editor to see if your details are appropriate. I've commented on the deletion nomination page and you can, and should, post your comments there, as no one interested in it is likely to pick it up here on my talk page. 2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey
The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has appointed a committee to lead the search for the foundation’s next Executive Director. One of our first tasks is to write the job description of the executive director position, and we are asking for input from the Wikimedia community. Orphaned non-free revisions
Hi Ww2censor. Just for the record, I did not tag File:InacioFortaleza.png with Template:Di-orphaned fair use; I tagged it with Template:Orphaned non-free revisions. If you read the latter template, you'll see that it says "The previous version(s) of this file are non-free. The older revision(s) are no longer being used in articles, and therefore fail the Wikipedia non-free content criteria. Image mashups
Apologies for continually bothering you, but you seem willing to help. It seems the extracted from template doesn't support multiple source images, specifically in reference to this image, which is a combination of two images already on commons. - This is not an extracted image but a derived image, so I've fixed it but I also tried to use an extracted but as you say it did not work but {{image extracted|1= |2= }} c:Template:Image extracted does work. Try it in a sandbox. ww2censor (talk) 14:06, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

- Actually no, I don't know this place exactly but I probably passed it is an earlier life. Before looking at the file page I presumed it might be south west Co Dublin or even north Co Wicklow, so I was not too far off. Nice shot but for me I could possibly do with a little more saturation and I like the 3/4 backlight. Are you using RAW files as that makes keeping details better than jpeg? Regarding the wikilovesmonuments, don't think about it as a competition as it's just a way of encouraging photographers to contribute shots, like you do, but within a short time span. Bit of advice needed...
Hi WW. was looking at the Brittas Bay article and much of it seemed to be taken up by a blog on the local bus service! I removed some stuff - but now am looking at more:
Public dissatisfaction over removal of stop from route 2
"Until the end of September 2012 Bus Éireann route 2 used to stop at Jack White's Cross numerous times each day. There was considerable public dissatisfaction with the decision as the bus provides a useful link to hospitals as well as for commuting and leisure purposes. The stop at Jack White's Cross was reinstated in the route 2 timetable from 25 August 2013 (inclusive).[1][2] "

- I'm inclined to agree with you but I would try to replace it with some useful cited prose. As it stands it is really not encyclopaedic. In fact the whole article is rather a mess so I moved some stuff around. It needs more citations and maybe some of the older travel books at archive.org or books.google.com will have some details that might be useful. I probably could rate the articles but I do feel better with someone checking them to be sure they actually have value and no glaring errors (forgotten/broken citations etc). - That's fine too, however, citations and notability don't really affect the class rating, and errors too are really a content issue that are usually considered separately from assessments. Obviously as one gets to higher class articles such matters are important and get picked on but at the stub and start level, its really just the quantity of prose that determine its class and getting into the appropriate projects. You might be interested in the project statistics. Whatever you have been doing is great so thanks for all your hard work in starting new articles of Irish interest even if you feel unhappy doing assessments. Hi Ww2censor. You tagged a bunch of files uploaded by Special:Contributions/ADunwoody07 with "npd" templates which seems to have been related to your discussion with him at WP:MCQ. Anyway, the editor has updated the information for the relevant files, and removed the tags. Even though this was done in good faith, I still think this is insufficient proof and have re-added the tag to one of the files. - @Marchjuly: Currently all the remaining images are tagged in some way. My concern, after they removed the tag, was that the author name and uploader name did not match, their first edits gave a different name as the copyright holder, and their user page give no indication of any connection. They may well be the same but we would need verification, so maybe an OTRS email would be best. Fastily has nominated some for deletion and I have commented there as well as placing the notices that Fastily failed to do on the users talk page, as well as reiterating the need for verification per WP:CONSENT. - OK - here is what I hope is a simpler case; George Lee (journalist). This is (to my utter disbelief), rated as a GA. Perhaps that is a symptom of the time it was rated (2010), when George was not just giving the news but 'was' the news?

- Well I read the article and as it is a GA, it would need a WP:GAR to demote it and that does happen. I updated several source links but there are now around 10 dead links that need updating. It does not appear to have been touched significantly since then so the last 5 years are entirely missing. I think it's better than a C, maybe a B, but if you want to start a GAR, even if only to experience one, let me know. Presidents of Ireland
Hello. I must say that its unbelievable to me that there aren't some free images of Erskine Hamilton Childers and Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, at least from some earlier periods of their lives (before the presidency). Childers served as a minister on several occasions, while Ó Dálaigh held several judicial positions. Maybe those periods should be "explored" to find a free image of them... - Believe me it's not unbelievable, several people have uploaded image they claimed were freely licensed but on closer investigation all have proved to have dubious copyright status or definitely been in copyright. I have searched several possible locations, such as the Library of Congress, US White House and Netherland's Nationaal Archief website to name a few. I actually think I have been lucky to find some images such as these which have eluded us for several years:

- I didn't have any idea that its so difficult to find free images of Childers and Ó Dálaigh. Of course, you have far more experience with this than myself, so I have no problem to believe your judgement. Also, I saw free images of Irish politicians which you found so far. I can only congratulate you on that, and encourage you to continue in the same way... In the end, I must ask you about a separate issue - there are many free images of Rhodesian politicians, but none of two politicians which served as the President of Rhodesia (Clifford Dupont and John Wrathall). US Postal Service logo
Hello. The user here is wanting to know whether or not the USPS logo would be in the public domain since it is a government entity... They're trying to put it in Political appointments of Donald Trump but since it is listed as non-free, I've removed it from the article with the IP re-inserting it into the article. - @Corkythehornetfan and 96.36.68.29: Both of you sould have continued the discussion on the WP:MCQ page so other knowledgeable editors could have had the opportunity to respond but here goes. While the text is clearly not copyright in the US, the complex eagle design certainly passes the threshold of originality which is why it is here on the enwiki as a non-free image and not on the commons, and as such it use MUST comply with all 10 non-free media policy guidelines. It can really only be used in an article about that organisation, USPS, which is no longer a government department, and it clearly fails WP:NFCC when added to Political appointments of Donald Trump. It's very clear cut, so it should not be readded to that article. ww2censor (talk) 19:26, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Pictures for the article on Silvia Șerbescu
Thank you for your offer of help for the uploading of picture material.
My ambition was to create an article of the same quality and information value as the one about Cella Delavrancea, which I took as an example. The pictures were taken from the family archive kept by her daughter, Liana Șerbescu, presently living in the Netherlands. I thought the logical place to upload them would be WikiMedia. However, as you were able to notice by reading my discussion with Jim, they were deleted. So I can no longer link to them, they are only available on hard copy.
Besides the four pictures whose origin and history is described in my discussion with Jim quoted above, Mrs Șerbescu has in her archive a few photos made by her father. I suppose this should not cause any problem.
About the bust of her mother made by the sculptor George Anghel, I should add that she possesses a photo made by the sculptor himself, bearing date and signature, offered to her to be used in any publication about her mother. Unfortunately this was done orally, there is no document to prove this gift in intellectual property. This is how things were done back then, when intellectual property was treated in common sense terms - knowing that if someone told you it was OK to use, you could trust them not to sue you later.
So you see I really need to be guided on the subject of getting all this material into the article. It is material that is only accessible in Mrs Șerbescu archive (excepting Anghel's sculpture, which is on Wikipedia), one photo having been taken 90 years ago at a studio that ceased to exist 80 years ago and some others by anonymous friends. Is there a way to populate the article with such material?

- Actually you have rather repeated much of what is on Jim's page and I already read it there. Anyway, if Liana Șerbescu has images that were taken by her father, then I presume she is the heir and can license those images as she wishes, in which case they can be uploaded to the commons. Were any of these ones that were already deleted from the commons? It did not seem like that was the case. This information affects the situation regarding the use of any non-free image whose copyright permission you do not have because we don't accept non-free images if a freely licensed image is available, even if the image is not the best quality. This is a very important point you must clarify first.
- If you only have access non-free images, you may only upload one image, so choose the best one, and let me know, so I can make sure the correct information for a non-free rationale is completed or you could email it to me when you are ready and I'll do it for you. Unfortunately the sculpture image is a non starter unless the sculptor died more than 70 years ago but Jim already told you that. - BTW, I looked at the article and there are some problems. We do not use urls for links to other wiki article but use a wikilink instead, so I've tried to fix the ones I see. I've left a few as interwiki links to the RO articles. Also, normally, we only link once to another article and not multiple times, so you may want to look at that. Another problem is the use ibid see WP:IBID, we just don't because, if an editors places another reference between two of them, the ibid gets broken and now looks like it belongs to a different source; we use a "ref name" and the repeat that in the second position, so read the 2nd paragraph of this page Wikipedia:Inline citation#Ref tags. Where specific facts come from one of the listed sources you use should use that inline and not as a separate source which is for other sources not used in the article itself. ww2censor (talk) 17:19, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
