Question about translated pages

[edit]

I wish to know which pages of Hindi Wikipedia have been translated from corresponding English articles. There must be the credit attribution for copyright purposes, so is there a page where all such language1-language2 credits/translation template (forgive my usage of terms, I am new here) are stored? Wraith1097 (talk) 13:30, 20 August 2011 (UTC) wraith[reply]

There is no such central page. If an article is translated from one Wikipedia to another, that fact should be noted on the talk page of the translated article, in order to maintain attribution to the original authors. For translations into the English Wikipedia, the procedure is explained at WP:Translation, and there is a "template", {{Translated page}}, which can be placed on the talk page of the article producing a result like:

You would need to ask on the Hindi Wikipedia whether they have a corresponding procedure for articles translated into Hindi. Each Wikipedia is separate and has its own procedures. JohnCD (talk) 13:49, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question about page id's

[edit]

{{helpme}} Is there such a thing as a page id in Wikipedia such that every page has a unique one (preferably sequential). If so, how can I get pages using page id? I want to scroll through all the Wikipedia pages (again, preferably in a sequential manner). If there is no such thing as a page id, can I at least find the list of all Wikipedia pages somewhere? Thanks in anticipation.

I'm going to leave this open as I'm not so technically minded but my understanding is that each page has a unique ID number; when you are on a page, go to the toolbox menu on the left side of the page and click on permanent link: the "oldid" at the end of the URL is unique for each page in the database. However, I don't know of any way to scroll through these in any sequential manner because each seems to be attached to the name of the page, i.e., I don't tknow of a way to go to a single url like http://www.en.wikipedia/org/wiki/oldid=number that will be the same for each page, with just the number changing. Instead, each page name appears in the URL plus the ID.

You realize that there are 62,152,037 pages on Wikipedia? It would thus take you about about ¾ of a year looking at a page per second nonstop to look at each page in the database (and of course there are thousands and thousands of pages added every day). You can indeed look at a list of all these one quarter billion pages at Special:AllPages. If you just want to read all of our articles, of which there are 6,931,438, at five minutes per page it will take you about 35 years.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:39, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Are you familiar with the what links here button? If you know of a template that is placed on such articles (or their talk pages), navigate to the template page, then click on what links here and it will tell you all of the places that template is in use. Unfortunately, there is no what links here equivalent for interwiki links and, in fact, here it is explained that "there is no feature to find interwiki links..." Are you planning on doing translations into English? If so, a great way to do this is to go to the Hindi Equivalent of featured or good articles and see what is well developed there but either not present in English or less well developed. Woah, well that crapped out. I just checked, and they have barely done anything there on this (see here). Anyway, I'm not sure if anything I've said here has helped you further, but you might try asking some questions at Wikipedia:WikiProject India.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 08:34, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
