MSU Interview

Dear Wimt,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.115.210 (talk) 21:51, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Bot removing non-blocked editors

Here the bot removed an editor whom I have not blocked or autoblocked. I've blocked an IP 72.53.194.237 (talk · contribs) for a month right before that, but softblocked. Materialscientist (talk) 11:39, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

A similar thing happened here. This vandal was removed literally 1 second after I added it, before Twinkle even refreshed the page for me. I wonder if this was some kind of odd edit conflict. --Andrew (User:90) (talk) 20:40, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi, yes that second one was simply an edit conflict. Unfortunately there's no easy way round those, other than undoing the bot's edit which should then clear things up. The other one is odd - I'll have to look into that one in more detail to try to work out exactly what the bot was up to there. Let me know if it happens again though - it may assist in tracking down the problem. Thanks. Will (aka Wimt) 23:02, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

I'll just keep posting glitches of the HBC AIV helperbot7 here, not to forget, leaving Wimt to judge whether they are systematic or worth investigating. Here the bot removed an IP whom I've blocked the same minute for 24 h, but the summary was "blocked 1 month by HJ_Mitchell ..". Materialscientist (talk) 08:25, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Please block this IP

Hi, it looks like that IP has been blocked. The best place to report active vandals is WP:AIV, since lots of admins watch that page. Will (aka Wimt) 06:36, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Odd Helperbot edit

Any particular reason why the seventh bot would make this edit? Found it odd. Calabe1992 13:41, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Also, note that both the blocking administrator and length of block shown in the edit summary are wrong (the user was actually indeffed by Reaper Eternal). Calabe1992 13:44, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
I think the edit itself was an edit conflict with this edit, which is why it ended up with the slightly odd edit of adding a /. As far as the details in the edit summary though, that is an issue and looks similar to the one described by Materialscientist above. I'm not quite sure what's causing that to go wrong sometimes (I'm assuming a subtle change in one of the pages the bot looks at for its information), but I will fix it when I figure out what's causing it. Let me know if it happens again, because hopefully that should help tracking down the issue. Thanks. Will (aka Wimt) 19:12, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll keep an eye on it when swinging by AIV and UAA. Calabe1992 00:06, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
